With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Sleez is the New God of Corruption,
Not corruption, Portland Pornography.
Otherwise, yes. Pornography's domain was corrupting Darkseid's domain of Tyranny into expressing itself narratively as a porno flick version of Darkseid Is.

Damn you autocorrect, what would a New God Of Portland even be like???

Sending him to the Sciencells seems like a good idea. I think the Guardians are pretty chill about that kind of thing, I don't know that they'd really want a favour or anything. And since Sleez is apparently not popular with Darkseid, I don't think the treaty is too likely to be a problem.

Yes, that does seem like a pretty good option. He's technically an "alien invader" so under Green Lantern jurisdiction.

The only thing I would be unsure about is that I don't really have a good grip on how the Guardians think about these things and what degree of crime (evil?) they require before locking someone up in a ScienceCell. Sleez is undoubtedly a bad person doing bad things, but he's not really an alien warlord out to genocide systems or anything like that. It would be up to the Guardians' own arcane sense of justice.

Mr. Batson floats up out of the-

"Hey there! Hi!"

-subway, cheerfully greeting the passers by as he does so. Some wave back, some just stare, and others appear to be trying to avoid the weird flying man in the pyjamas. A small child runs up to him and he lands, bending down to have a conversation at their level.

Besides me, Lantern Jordan sighs.

"What? He's a friendly guy."

He makes a gesture of appeal. "Look, I get that not everyone was in the military. And I don't have anything against P.R. work… Gotta do some of it. It just winds me up that he's got something important to do and he's doing…"

Mr. Batson picks the child up and spins then around, to their obvious delight.

Jordan gestures towards him. "That. If someone came to me with Sinestro's ring, I'm taking it straight to Oa right away. Wouldn't matter if I was in bed, on a date, in the shower… It's too important."

Mr. Batson puts the child down, pats them on the head and then flies up towards us.

"Really? You wouldn't be tempted to give it to Batman?"

He snorts. "I'm sure Batman would do great with a power ring-"

Mr. Batson's eyes widen. "Batman's getting a power ring?!"

"-but-." Jordan jerks his head from me to Mr. Batson. "No. It's just a theoretical."

"Oh." Mr. Batson looks disappointed for a moment, then recovers, grinning. "Because that would be so cool."

"I wouldn't give him Sinestro's ring because there's all kinds of ways to booby trap a power ring, and I'm pretty sure Sinestro's got his set up with all of 'em."

I bow my head slightly. "Ah."

"You didn't check yours?"

"Well, I was in orbit, so even if it was trapped, what was I going to do?"

"Okay, but you check it since?"

"Yeah. And I ran the orange light through it just in case it was programmed not to detect the traps, and I had the Wotan construct check it with magic just in case." Jordan nods. "Which… I could also do if you got Sinestro's ring."

"I can't think of a way to beat Sinestro that doesn't involve destroying his ring, and I doubt that's gunna happen in the next eight months. Marvel, what did your wizard say?"

"Yeah, he…" Mr. Batson points awkwardly at the amulet with his right hand. "Kinda… Wants that back..?

I frown. "It was in a cave for several thousand years. What's the urgency?"

"I guess it's not… Like… Urgent-urgent? But… He… Wants it back. And he's, like, the best guy for keeping evil magic artefacts safe, and we don't want anyone else becoming Black Adam."

I frown. "Did he..? Fill you in on the background? Because I did some checking, and the man who was using it was called Doctor Theodore Adam. He was a Kahndaqologist, and he certainly wasn't alive thousands of years ago."

"No, that…" He sighs. "So, he told me that the original Black Adam was his old champion. He started out as a good guy, but he ended up trying to conquer the Middle East so the wizard stripped him of his powers."

I frown. "So where does the amulet come in?"

"That's…" He looks really awkward. "So, one of my powers makes me… Pretty good at judging people. I've never… I don't think the wizard was being completely honest about what happened? He said that the amulet was part of the ritual he did to give Black Adam… The first Black Adam, his powers…" He looks awkward. "But he didn't need one for me… So…"

"So it can be used to gain Black Adam's powers, but Theodore didn't stay in Kahndaq or try to conquer anywhere, suggesting that his original personality was intact. And in control."

"Well… Not… For sure, but… Probably."

"Okay, so what happens if I hold it up and say the word?"

"I didn't specifically ask, but I don't think anything would happen. The wizard didn't say anything about approving Theodore Adam, but there hasn't been another Black Adam between him and the original, so there's probably a ritual or something he needed to do to use it. And I don't know how that goes."

And I'd want to do a lot more investigation before I try something like that.

"There wasn't any record of Theodore getting any sort of magic training from anywhere, which means that he either tripped over the ritual, or… It's a generic Ancient Kahndaqi religious rite, because… Zeus. He wouldn't have even heard of Zeus, would he?"

"Um. No?"

"And he'd probably have been quite religious, so I doubt he'd want to honour foreign gods…"

Mr. Batson nods, then blinks as something occurs to him. "You.. already know what's going on, don't you?"

Jordan nods. "Zatara's locking up some woman called 'Angelica Blaze'. According to her, she used to date the original Black Adam."

"So why did you ask..? You wanted a second source just in case she was lying."

I nod. "Technically, we don't know which of them is lying. But Ms. Blaze was being compelled by Mister Zatara's magic while Jebediah of Canaan is free to lie."

He blinks heavily. "Is that his real name? How did you find it out?"

Jordan smirks. "According to her, your wizard got a succubus pregnant and she's the result."

Mr. Batson's face slides towards blankness. "Ah… That… Didn't… Come up. Are you sure about that?"

I nod. "Batman frowns on me assimilating contained prisoners, but basically yes."

"I.. guess he can't have been old his whole life… So… Like, what really happened?"

I shrug. "According to her, the original Adam and Jebediah had a huge argument about something, Jebediah killed him and bound his soul to the amulet."

"Oh." He looks thoughtfully uncomfortable. "He didn't… Mention any of that. But now that you've told me, I'm… Spotting the places where he didn't say things."

I nod. "Now, armed with the truth, please go back there and ask him not to leave things out this time. I don't trust Ms. Blaze not to maliciously avoid mentioning things that we really need to know."

"Okay, I can-" He nods. "-do that. But… I couldn't help noticing that you didn't say what you were going to do with it."

I nod again. "I didn't, because that decision will depend on what he says. The two things I'm thinking about are ritually destroying it so that Black Adam's soul can travel to the afterlife, and finding someone to use it so that his powers do some good."

"Are.. you gunna use it?"

"I'm… Not sure. Again, it depends."

"Paula, now that you're… Fully healthy again…" She gives me a level look, probably wandering where I'm going. Across the room, Artemis looks around from the television with a look of distinct concern on her face. "Have you thought about taking up superheroism? And, do you have any strong religious beliefs?"

"I will need several more months of physical therapy before I can walk normally. I do want to get back to the level of fitness that I used to have, but I had not thought about becoming Huntress again. And… No. Why are you asking?"

"I thought that going out together might be a.. good couples bonding thing."

She smiles, shaking her head. "You are far more powerful than I was. And I do not have time for long term infiltration."

I nod, taking Adom's amulet out of subspace. "But what if you could be as powerful as me?"

Mr. Batson's eyes widen. "Batman's getting a power ring?!"

"-but-." Jordan jerks his head from me to Mr. Batson. "No. It's just a theoretical."

"Oh." Mr. Batson looks disappointed for a moment, then recovers, grinning. "Because that would be so cool

Not really, Billy.

Jordan nods. "Zatara's locking up some woman called 'Angelica Blaze'. According to her, she used to date the original Black Adam

Not quite.

"I.. guess he can't have been old his whole life…

And even if he was old that wouldn't necessarily stop him.

I nod, taking Adom's amulet out of subspace. "But what if you could be as powerful as me
I remember a picture of Teth kissing Paul.

Wonder if that inspired this.

Still I'm hoping that Teth will get to come back eventually.

Maybe he can lend Paula a portion of his power like he did with Amon.

"I thought that going out together might be a.. good couples bonding thing."

She smiles, shaking her head. "You are far more powerful than I was. And I do not have time for long term infiltration."

I nod, taking Adom's amulet out of subspace. "But what if you could be as powerful as me?"

I don't like CS Paul, I find him kinda boring. But I would love to read about the adventures of orange lantern and black tigress. It is cute that he did that for her.

Mr. Batson floats up out of the-

"Hey there! Hi!"
ah, taking the amulet to the big red cheese, eh? Or more likely he's returning from a consultation with the wizard about it. I wonder what the old man had to say about the matter, and whether he'd tell the whole truth about it. Let's find out. 😏

Heh. wonder if people have theories about why he's so friendly to kids? 🤔 Remember 'First Thunder' where he and Superman meet for the first time? There's a moment where after Billy's best friend is killed by Sivana's goons, he blurts that fact out to Superman. For a second, he has this look of 'Wait, what do you mean by that?' where you can see exactly what Supes is thinking (and it's not good.)

He makes a gesture of appeal. "Look, I get that not everyone was in the military. And I don't have anything against P.R. work… Gotta do some of it. It just winds me up that he's got something important to do and he's doing…"

Mr. Batson picks the child up and spins then around, to their obvious delight.
Fortunately, Billy understands that the world needs hope, and he understands how to give it to children. And that's before you add in the Wisdom of Solomon...

Well, some people have different priorities. Especially young men who have been granted the power of gods.

"Really? You wouldn't be tempted to give it to Batman?"

He snorts. "I'm sure Batman would do great with a power ring-"
...Gee, how timely. 😏

Mr. Batson's eyes widen. "Batman's getting a power ring?!"

"-but-." Jordan jerks his head from me to Mr. Batson. "No. It's just a theoretical."
And I suspect he'd have trouble firing it up, even now. While he's not at the 'happy hero' state he was in Paragon's timeline, he's still not the dark avenger he used to be.

"Oh." Mr. Batson looks disappointed for a moment, then recovers, grinning. "Because that would be so cool."

"I wouldn't give him Sinestro's ring because there's all kinds of ways to booby trap a power ring, and I'm pretty sure Sinestro's got his set up with all of 'em."
Batman with a Power Ring. The very definition of overpowered. (Admittedly, the meme uses a green Ring, but still...)

I bow my head slightly. "Ah."

"You didn't check yours?"
With what? The possibly-compromised Power Ring? 😏

"Well, I was in orbit, so even if it was trapped, what was I going to do?"

"Okay, but you check it since?"
Without taking it to the Guardians, who probably wouldn't return it. That could be tricky.

That's a good point. Sinestro is very talented with a Ring, however some showings presented him.

"Yeah, he…" Mr. Batson points awkwardly at the amulet with his right hand. "Kinda… Wants that back..?

I frown. "It was in a cave for several thousand years. What's the urgency?"
He'd probably spout some guff about it 'falling into the wrong hands' IE any but his.

Gotta love the way some things change in DC. Although Kahndaqologist does have a more exciting ring to it than egyptologist. (Weird that they're about the most famous region-specific archaeological discipline to get a well-known name for themselves.)

"No, that…" He sighs. "So, he told me that the original Black Adam was his old champion. He started out as a good guy, but he ended up trying to conquer the Middle East so the wizard stripped him of his powers."

I frown. "So where does the amulet come in?"
Of course, that's a very stripped down and biased account of the matter from the Wizard...

"But he didn't need one for me… So…"
Best to trust that Wisdom, Billy. It's right on the money.

That would be an interesting power-up, but I think the Kahndaqi gods might have something to say about you 'stealing' their power. Theo only got away with it by tricking them into thinking he was Teth-Adom, after all.

"I didn't specifically ask, but I don't think anything would happen. The wizard didn't say anything about approving Theodore Adam, but there hasn't been another Black Adam between him and the original, so there's probably a ritual or something he needed to do to use it. And I don't know how that goes."
Good, you noticed that. Though I bet the Wizard was being quite mum on the subject...

Theo or Teth-Adom? Because an archaeologist who didn't have a little grounding in the cultures of the whole region (the Mediterranean, in this case) would have just a bit of trouble comparing cultural references sometimes, wouldn't they?

"Um. No?"

"And he'd probably have been quite religious, so I doubt he'd want to honour foreign gods…"
Ah, CS!OL trying to hint that maybe the Wizard didn't call on the same gods as he did for Billy, eh?

Mr. Batson nods, then blinks as something occurs to him. "You.. already know what's going on, don't you?"

Jordan nods. "Zatara's locking up some woman called 'Angelica Blaze'. According to her, she used to date the original Black Adam."
Which gets a little interesting, considering his history and her origins.

"So why did you ask..? You wanted a second source just in case she was lying."

I nod. "Technically, we don't know which of them is lying. But Ms. Blaze was being compelled by Mister Zatara's magic while Jebediah of Canaan is free to lie."
There's that Wisdom again.

He blinks heavily. "Is that his real name? How did you find it out?"

Jordan smirks. "According to her, your wizard got a succubus pregnant and she's the result."
And her brother, Satanus, but that would just complicate the discussion, right?

Mr. Batson's face slides towards blankness. "Ah… That… Didn't… Come up. Are you sure about that?"

I nod. "Batman frowns on me assimilating contained prisoners, but basically yes."
Not that he's about to mention the real source of his metaknowledge, of course.

"I.. guess he can't have been old his whole life… So… Like, what really happened?"

I shrug. "According to her, the original Adam and Jebediah had a huge argument about something, Jebediah killed him and bound his soul to the amulet."
Not inaccurate, but the divergence is down to personal perspectives...

A big drawback of questioning someone that way. Just because she has to answer, doesn't mean she has to answer fully. Pity they didn't get Diana involved on this...

I suspect the Wizard would have opinions on any choice he makes, and any selection he puts forwards, but it's not really his place to comment.

"Are.. you gunna use it?"

"I'm… Not sure. Again, it depends."
It would probably mean having Teth-Adom's consciousness sitting in the back of his mind when he's using it, commenting on everything he does... There's no way he wouldn't have it bound the way Theo did, after all.

"Paula, now that you're… Fully healthy again…" She gives me a level look, probably wandering where I'm going. Across the room, Artemis looks around from the television with a look of distinct concern on her face. "Have you thought about taking up superheroism? And, do you have any strong religious beliefs?"
I like the different angles of 'Where is he going with this?' they're presenting...

"I will need several more months of physical therapy before I can walk normally. I do want to get back to the level of fitness that I used to have, but I had not thought about becoming Huntress again. And… No. Why are you asking?"

"I thought that going out together might be a.. good couples bonding thing."
'Going out' in the 'Worm' sense, eh? Though the colloquial probably existed before Wildbow used it...

She smiles, shaking her head. "You are far more powerful than I was. And I do not have time for long term infiltration."

I nod, taking Adom's amulet out of subspace. "But what if you could be as powerful as me?"
It's more powerful than a Dannering, and able to be turned off. That would be interesting.

Hmm... Fit Asian lady in a black-and-gold bodysuit. Time to look up some Rule 63... Wonder if this fits the bill? Would definitely be a fascinating sight, and a marvellous point of divergence for Common Sense. Especially if she can get on well with Teth-Adom's spirit and the Kahndaqi Gods. So many interesting possibilities, in all senses of the word...

Pity they didn't get Diana involved on this...

Diana may be powerful, but her knowledge of magic is lacking, so she may not be able to know what Blaze is doing.

No, quite the opposite. Though if you're concerned, they asked, and he was okay with it. It's not like the afterlife is going anywhere.

Ehh, with the lack of worship aimed towards them, it honestly may go away.

I'm surprised he didn't want to either move on or serve/protect Kahndaq. Common Sense Paul must be better at negotiation that I anticipated.

Nothing stopping Paula from becoming the superhero of Kahndaq.

And there is the question of whether or not they could even revive Adom at this point.

In the other timelines he's now using Adams's body as his own, but here Paul destroyed that.

They may try to stick it to a corpse, but it may require a living body, and the League may not be okay with a human sacrifice.

No, quite the opposite. Though if you're concerned, they asked, and he was okay with it. It's not like the afterlife is going anywhere.
Oh yay, if Paula (or someone else) gets to enjoy Adom as a mentor, then we'll REALLY have proof that Nabu's tantrum is worthy of mockery.

… it seems like Nabu should have been able to reach out to a god of order, even if the other Lords of Order were unreachable. It would be an embarrassing blow to his pride and could take years, but surely he could get a magic message out ONE time? Well. Oh. I guess Paul would be able to do so with those restrictions, but Nabu with his brain) made of order…? He isn't the sort to find a creative solution. Dang.

She smiles, shaking her head. "You are far more powerful than I was. And I do not have time for long term infiltration."

I nod, taking Adom's amulet out of subspace. "But what if you could be as powerful as me?"
It feels like common sense would say talk to Black Adam before you started offering people supreme cosmic power with a very decent living space.

Hmm, it would be interesting if this becomes CS Paul's thing- giving people supervillain powers/toys like how Paragon gives out super-serums like candy and Gravy is all "New God apotheosis for you! And you! New God apotheosis for everyone!"

Helmut looks like he's trying to think of the most polite way to tell me 'no'.

"I had thought that statues of respected figures from American history could be used in that role."

I nod as I look around his office workroom. Construction can only go so fast, and Mr. Schreiber can design a good deal faster than that. Which is just as well really, considering the short notice that I gave him.

"The issue there is magic. Given what happened during my visit to the Heartlands, I don't want to try using the fundamental magics of the United States of America at all if I can avoid it, and drawing on historical archetypes would very much involve that. But a tribute to Tyche doesn't have that problem."

"I, ah… You have more expertise on magic, obviously. But… The angel Zauriel is a member of the Justice League? Would it not be less… Less risky, to ask him to bless this city?"

"Not… Exactly. Ah. How familiar are you with the Book of Job?"

"I have read it. I understand that hardship exists to test our faith, and we should not be so arrogant as to believe that we deserve success."

"Right. Life is a test. Which means that they're not going to make things easier."

He blinks twice, eyes dropping to… A sketch of a cathedral. "Even now?"

"Compare our lives to those of almost any other period in human history, and tell me that we are more worthy of having an exception made for us. Compare this to the Black Death, or the Spanish Flu, or the Bronze Age Collapse."

He thinks for a moment, and then nods. "I suppose it is natural that the troubles of our own time weigh most heavily on my mind. God gives us these tools…" he looks up. "Was this 'Tyche' on the list of pagan creatures with whom it is safe to make such pacts?"

"I wouldn't have brought it up if she weren't."

"And all that she wants in return for her blessing is statues?"

"And a dedication. A small plaque explaining who she is will be fine."

He nods unenthusiastically, looking through the photographs I look of the images of Tyche from Themyscira. "Do I need to copy this exactly?"

"No, no, of course not. Just keep the face, hair, and general body shape the same. She can wear what you like and be in whatever pose you like."

"Okay. Okay. Is there a ritual that is required?"

"Yes, but it doesn't require anything structural and I can arrange to have someone perform it when the reconstruction is completed."

"Okay. I will think about who to incorporate this in the public spaces. And the… Ring road?"

"The thing about… The Dolmen gates, is that they remove the necessity of driving through large parts of the city to get to where you need to go. And as a result, a lot of things just wouldn't get seen by a lot of people."

"Yes, but it also means that drivers do not need to compete for space on the roads with heavy goods vehicles. I had planned for roads that would be pleasant to drive for those living in the city, as well as utilitarian roads for industrial usage. After all, we do want a city which can keep working if something interferes with the gate network."

"Good, great, well done. Is adding a road around the city going to create a problem?"

"No… Ah, perhaps."

"Um. How so?"

"When I design a thing, I must always keep in mind how it works with everything else. When designing a street, I must consider not just the power cables and water pipes, but also the direction of the light and the wind. How bright will it be? How will the temperature change throughout the year? But also, in the other direction. How will people from other cities think about this. And I have been thinking that there are things I could build into this city that would work the best if they were used everywhere."

"Like?"

"Warehousing. If we had large warehousing complexes around the edges of the city, with a dedicated railway into the centre, we could easily remove the need for large lorries to drive into the centre of the city. Perhaps with a legislative change to prohibit vehicles above a certain size on public roads?"

"If you can make it work, then by all means. And… You want to reorganize city design like that across the entire country?"

He nods, looking around the many many architectural drawings attached to… Just about every surface and notice board around the room. "I read about your project to replace the American electrical transmission grid."

"Heh. Yes, but that's… Taken a back seat doesn't even begin to cover it. Indefinitely postponed. I don't have the facility to produce that much jovium."

"No, but there are other changes, smaller and simpler, which we could make while… Ah, I do not like to say 'while the cities are empty', but…"

"It does make things easier." I nod. "Forward any suggestions you have to me, and I'll send them onwards to the parts of the League which are responsible for that sort of thing."

"Not, ah… Not the government? FEMA?"

I shrug. "You can. But the League's overseeing everything worldwide. Sending it to them is the best way to get it widely implemented."

"The whole w-? Ah, perhaps I should.. think about it a little more."

"Good show." I look around, scanning everything and adding it to the plans I've already been shown… Yes, good, he's making excellent progress. Nothing objectionable, if I'm any judge. Which I'm not. "Alright, is there anything you need from me?"

"No. No, the work continues and everything is working as it should."

"Glad to hear it. I'll leave you to it, then."

I

step out, and…

Huh.

Sleez knew nothing useful, and we made pretty sure that he was telling the truth. So we've got no idea where Batman learned to manipulate New Gods technology as he can. I don't even know if he can do it himself. More and more people are signing up to become Peace Operatives, and they're doing a good enough job to generate a positive public reaction.

I don't know what I want out of this, and I don't know what to do about it.

I

step back in inside the Mountain, where Roy is still going through the League's records.

"Anything new?"

"Nothing useful. Do you think we're working this from the wrong end?"

"Probably. How do you mean?"

"If Batman's got a New God consultant, they can only come from two places." He shrugs. "Why don't we just ask people on New Genesis?"

Ah, paying the bills, so to speak, for his aid earlier in the Question's dream-realm trap. And once guess what Tyche asked for. Or at least what OL expects she'd want, since I don't know if OL's gotten any messages from her.

Oooh, good point, especially if the Badlands can also reach through the iconography. Also, Tyche needs the respect and has a swanky sense of style.

"I, ah… You have more expertise on magic, obviously. But… The angel Zauriel is a member of the Justice League? Would it not be less… Less risky, to ask him to bless this city?"

"Not… Exactly. Ah. How familiar are you with the Book of Job?"
Given how corrupted Hub City was, it would have had a good chance of facing the fate of Sodom and Gomorrah...

"I have read it. I understand that hardship exists to test our faith, and we should not be so arrogant as to believe that we deserve success."

"Right. Life is a test. Which means that they're not going to make things easier."
Of course, that leaves openings for cheating, hence the infernal's ability to corrupt and deceive.

Good point.

After all, OL can approach her directly, and make sure she's on the up-and-up. Tyche would almost certainly want the attention and worship, so it's mutually beneficial.

"And all that she wants in return for her blessing is statues?"

"And a dedication. A small plaque explaining who she is will be fine."
On every statue, ideally. Or at least those at street-level. Want to spread that sweet, sweet knowledge, after all.

He nods unenthusiastically, looking through the photographs I look of the images of Tyche from Themyscira. "Do I need to copy this exactly?"

"No, no, of course not. Just keep the face, hair, and general body shape the same. She can wear what you like and be in whatever pose you like."
Surprised he didn't go up to Olympus to get her to pose for reference shots directly. Guess she prefers the Hellenic style.

"Okay. Okay. Is there a ritual that is required?"

"Yes, but it doesn't require anything structural and I can arrange to have someone perform it when the reconstruction is completed."
Presumably one of the priestesses from Themyscira.

"Okay. I will think about how to incorporate this in the public spaces. And the… Ring road?"

"The thing about… The Dolmen gates, is that they remove the necessity of driving through large parts of the city to get to where you need to go. And as a result, a lot of things just wouldn't get seen by a lot of people."
The drawback of direct transit methods, much like Mass Relays or Space-folding stardrives.

The trick is getting people to respect that, what with the way America seems to idolise cars... 😏 All it would take is one asshole driver to screw things up.

"Good, great, well done. Is adding a road around the city going to create a problem?"

"No… Ah, perhaps."

"Um. How so?"
Hmm... It would allow you to form a sort of perimeter for heavy goods vehicles... Prevent the need to have streets big enough to handle a 50 foot trailer turning. Instead, you can have lots of wide pedestrian-friendly roads.

"When I design a thing, I must always keep in mind how it work with everything else.
Crafting a template for new cities, eh? That would definitely get Tyche on your side.

"Like?"

"Warehousing. If we had large warehousing complexes around the edges of the city, with a dedicated railway into the centre, we could easily remove the need for large lorries to drive into the centre of the city. Perhaps with a legislative change to prohibit vehicles above a certain size on public roads?"
Sounds very European, really. And that's cool.

"If you can make it work, then by all means. And… You want to reorganize city design like that across the entire country?"

He nods, looking around the many many architectural drawings attached to… Just about every surface and notice board around the room. "I read about your project to replace the American electrical transmission grid."
And he felt inspired? Probably very exciting, getting to design an entire city centre from the ground up.

"Heh. Yes, but that's… Taken a back seat doesn't even begin to cover it. Indefinitely postponed. I don't have the facility to produce that much jovium."

"No, but there are other changes, smaller and simpler, which we could make while… Ah, I do not like to say 'while the cities are empty', but…"
What better time? Yes, much easier without having to work around city traffic and pedestrians. Ticking people off by closing streets while the buildings are being built, that sort of thing.

"It does make things easier." I nod. "Forward any suggestions you have to me, and I'll send them onwards to the parts of the League which are responsible for that sort of thing."

"Not, ah… Not the government? FEMA?"
Ah, he hasn't really been keeping up with things, has he? To busy in the studio.

I shrug. "You can. But the League's overseeing everything worldwide. Sending it to them is the best way to get it widely implemented."

"The whole w-? Ah, perhaps I should.. think about it a little more."
Heh. Starting to get an idea of the sheer potential of the impact he could have, isn't he?

"Good show." I look around, scanning everything and adding it to the plans I've already been shown… Yes, good, he's making excellent progress. Nothing objectionable, if I'm any judge. Which I'm not. "Alright, is there anything you need from me?"

"No. No, the work continues and everything is working as it should."
Good to know. I bet the Hub City skyline is going to be spectacular.

"Glad to hear it. I'll leave you to it, then."

I

step out, and…
Off to the next check-in, eh?

Good, if uncomfortable. I guess there's a lot of bad memories and people seeking redemption.

I don't know what I want out of this, and I don't know what to do about it.

I
That's got to be frustrating as hell for him, given his Enlightenment.

step back in inside the Mountain, where Roy is still going through the League's records.

"Anything new?"

"Nothing useful. Do you think we're working this from the wrong end?"
Something other than the usual superheroic questing, maybe?

"Probably. How do you mean?"

"If Batman's got a New God consultant, they can only come from two places." He shrugs. "Why don't we just ask people on New Genesis?"
And OL just turns around, walks up to the nearest wall and starts bonking his head on it...

Damn, Roy making a lot of sense there. Getting Scott to call 'home' and see if Highfather has any input might be the best way to go about it, given how they reacted last time OL stopped by. Though I'd have to wonder just who could have played consultant on this. ...Maybe that's why Mr Zoat was looking for Forager pics. 🤔 Makes uncanny sense...

Thank you, corrected.

Ugh. The link to Forager II has a picture of Forager III...

Well for one the New Gods of New Genesis are arseholes. For another Paul did horrible soul mutilating damage to one of their VIPs, who is the son of the guy most likely to know if someone was trading with Batman.

Nice to see Helmut getting into the spirit of Avarice.

Not one of these? This one from Countdown? Or is it someone else? 🤔 The pain of such a generic name for a character... 😅 Maybe searching for their comics appearances by issue might help?

(There seems to be two female Forager characters: the original one from the eighties New Gods stuff, with Blue skin, and the pink one from Countdown... That's all my meager Google-fu could find, alas.) 🫡

They're also generally benevolent and are enemies of Darkseid.

The people of Earth were also able to get rid of Anti-Life from their planet, so they'd have a lot of reasons to want to investigate that place.

And Highfather isn't omniscient, so it may be possible to slip past him.
