With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Yigitkoroglu removed that art from deviantart, art station, and their personal website. Wayback doesn't work for devart, it does work for the dead link for the personal website. It'll be temporary, but there is also this non-wayback lamassu saved url from artstation which could work for any number of years. Much better than the Pinterest equivalent.

I'm curious how intelligent they are, compared to other non-humanoid magic-based creatures. Assuming it isn't artificial.
Thank you, updated.

Words for the Word God.

Observing them, I'd say that Invincible has the edge in technique, probably a benefit from more time being taught how to fight by Omni-Man. The local one might have the edge in raw power, however

Benefit of working with Cecil.

You just had to do it.

Omvincible smiles contemptuously. "I do have weaker points, but they're still too tough for you

I vaguely remember a comic where Hulk fought a guy that could see people's weak points and when that guy attacked Hulk's most vulnerable point all it did was make him laugh.

"Oh thank God." He taps his right ear. "Wait, that's it? Ear buds

I'm guessing he thought that anything that could harm someone of his caliber would need to be more impressive.

Invincible nods as he grabs Dark Invincible's head by the hair. "Good work team." He takes a grip. "Let's-."

Local Invincible starts towards him. "No! We don't need to kill him

I think you'll be singing a different tune after you meet Conquest.

"The blades undergo a process called 'x-ionisation'. They're razor sharp and… I thought they were pretty much indestructible. Something about viltrumite physiology makes them less effective than usual, but they're still my preferred way of harming them

Hmm, they were able to harm YJ Kryptonians.

Granted, they aren't the strongest versions, and Kryptonian powers are technically an energy field around their body, while Viltrumites are just their bodies.

. "Unless he's really mad. He used anti-matter on Vidor."

She blinks, then looks thoughtful

Just ask Mark to take you in space for practice.

"Because the rest of the government is just as bad. Governments

And the genocidal, mass enslaving supremacists are somehow better.

"Okay, look: I don't know her? But-" She frowns at him. "-I don't think you can conquer her planet and kill her friends and expect her to like you."

"But-."

"Even if the Viltrum Empire actually helps people

Yeah, any hope he has of rekindling a genuine relationship with his Eve are gone.

That bridge wasn't just burned.

It was destroyed at a subatomic level and if anything remained then it was banished to a universe that was collapsing.

And if that's what they do, why conquer it in the first place? You think if alien spaceships showed up over a slum somewhere and started building nicer houses anyone would complain about it?"

Don't be surprised at the stupid things people will do.

And while conquest may be quicker, the Viltrumites can literally afford to be patient in integrating societies even if it takes centuries.

Unfortunately they're all insane in one way or the other.

Local Invincible looks up. "Okay, Cecil says he's gunna send some people-."

There's a wuuymm noise from.. just above us. I look up-.

As twenty zombots fall on our heads

He told them that he was gonna send help and he did.

And to be fair the Reanimen are probably the only things he has that can subdue them if they try something.

A few years back, DA switched their URL scheme from deviantart.com/rebu to rebu.devianart.com (subdomain).

And after a few years, they switched back to the classic URL schema.

I suspect a lot of deviantART archives are actually under the second sub domain schema, not the classic schema.

In case anyone was wondering, the sub domain schema still works, it just redirects you to the current classic schema.

Schema.

PS turns out there is actually a DA user who has the same username as I do. By coincidence.

OL!Invincible: Ha! Knew it. That means he's fair game!
Canon!Invincible: Damn it, Cecil! He is an ally! ... I think.
Cecil's options aren't exactly numerous.

Any agents he may have are either dead, injured or engaging in fighting the other variants.

Plus, few of them are actually capable of fighting a Viltrumite and actually having a chance at winning.

The Reanimen gave some of the best showing in the series.

"…dodge, don't-!"

The local Atom Eve goes flying backwards as an Invincible in Omni-Man's uniform hammers his right fist into her too-fragile construct shield.
Okay, first thing to learn, miss Eve? You are not a melee fighter. If you are in melee, something has gone badly wrong. Also, I wonder why this one is wearing the Omniman suit (And possibly a moustache?) Maybe he managed to kill his dad and took up his mantle to honour him?

"Don't just tank hits from someone as strong-"

I viff to the side as he switches to focusing on me.

"-as a viltrumite! Evade!"
To be fair, though, Lantern, her power doesn't operate entirely like yours. Everything she does has to be consciously thought about, and that takes time. Still, standing still in a rocket-tag situation like this is definitely a bad idea.

Over to my right, Invincible and Local Invincible punch Dark Invincible back and forth between them too quickly for him to get his bearings, much less recover. Diaphragm, face, other side of face, spine, and then an over-the-head smash into the ground. Inefficient, but effective. Observing them, I'd say that Invincible has the edge in technique, probably a benefit from more time being taught how to fight by Omni-Man. The local one might have the edge in raw power, however.
A definite sign that Viltrumites have something similar to the Zenkai power of Saiyajin. Quite literally Nietzschean in its function: Whatever doesn't kill him makes him stronger.Though physical training probably helped. It could well be psychosomatic.

Omvincible stops still, watching and waiting. The local Atom Eve hits him in the side with an energy bolt, but he just ignores it as it slams into his side. Then he turns his head towards her. "Weak."

She generates-.
Yeah, that is just a rude flex.

"Stop! Don't close the distance. Think, Eve. Think. What are his points of vulnerability?"

Omvincible smiles contemptuously. "I do have weaker points, but they're still too tough for you."
Like the eyes? They can be damaged easily enough. Or, perhaps... The ears?

She hesitates for a moment. Then she glances at Local Invincible before fabricating a.. bullhorn? Well, that's a decent guess. He can clearly hear, so light and sound should-.

I wince and filter as she presses the plunger, an unpleasant high pitched sound blasting out.
I suppose an incredibly bright light might cause optical damage, but the risks to yourself and anyone behind them is too great. Plus they'd recover faster.

"D-ah!"

Omvincible cringes, hands covering his ears… Ineffectually, from the looks of it. In the distance Dark Invincible writhes in his impact crate while Local Invincible staggers away with his hands over his ears.
Right, maybe a more directional application next time, Eve?

"Huh." Invincible looks at me, tapping his earpieces gingerly. "Guess that's another one I owe you."

What?
Unknowingly heading off a potential risk point before they even realised it. How lucky.

Atom Eve looks at me. "You didn't know about that viltrimites could be disabled by sound?"

I frown. "I didn't think that viltrumite hearing was that good." I transition to Local Invincible and stick filters in his ears.

"Oh thank God." He taps his right ear. "Wait, that's it? Ear buds?"
Eh, you'd be amazed how effective they can be... Especially at blocking out all sense of danger around you. Way too many people walking out in front of moving vehicles they couldn't hear over their music or podcast...

"They're super-science noise cancelling ear buds with a built-in radio. Their original designer is probably still alive on this Earth."

"Right." He checks that Dark Invincible is still-.
Just in case he doesn't trust the free samples Lantern just gave him, you know?

Invincible lands on Dark Invincible's spine feet-first with a loud crack. Dark Invincible tries to cry out, but can't get any air into his lungs so it just comes out as a sort of a gasping gurgle. A brilliant pink glow illuminates the city a moment later as Local Atom Eve blasts Omvincible with an over charged blast of some sort, incinerating the costume off the left side of his body and badly burning the skin beneath. He doesn't quite plummet to the ground, but it's a near thing and her bullhorn is still going off.
Okay, a bit better. Still have to learn to focus the effect. I shudder at the damage she caused to the backstop.

Invincible nods as he grabs Dark Invincible's head by the hair. "Good work team." He takes a grip. "Let's-."

Local Invincible starts towards him. "No! We don't need to kill him."
I don't think he's going to play nice, Mark. Guy sounds like the edgy 90's teen version of yourself.

"Oh, don't worry. I practiced-" Snap. "-this."

"Hey!" Local Invincible gets up close to him. "I said 'don't kill him'. What part of that didn't you understand?!"
...You'd be amazed what you can live through. Though don't go looking it up without safesearch, even if you don't mind gore. Seriously.🤢

"Oh, I understood." Invincible nods. "And I didn't. Breaking someone's neck without killing them is pretty hard, but I got the hang of it eventually." He looks over to where Atom Eve is picking Omvincible up with a construct body cast. "You want me to do yours?!"

"U-ghuuuuuh."
I don't know which Invincible said that, but I expect if it was Omni-vincible, it was a 'Please don't.'

The both look down at Dark Invincible for a moment, then Invincible gestures with both hands.

"See?"
Ah, okay. And since even nerve damage can be regenerated by viltrumites...

"Okay." That leaves local Invincible a little out of sorts. "Ah. I'm gunna call Cecil and arrange pickup. See how everyone's doing against the other duplicates."

"Great!" Invincible smiles. "And hey, if he wants to come talk to me, I'm fine with that."

"I was just gunna leave you out, but, okay?" He looks at me. "How do I make this thing work?"
Hopefully he at least offers Cecil a 'sorry, but I'm really mad at my version of you, so don't take this personally' before he turns him into a red mist.

"Just tap twice, then say who you want to speak to." I float over to the wheezing Omvincible, take out an x-ionised knife and stab him in the spine. The knife pierces, and then the blade snaps off inside him. Atom Eve looks at me askance, so I shrug. "Viltrumites can regenerate from a lot of damage, and quickly. And they know that, so they're usually not shy about accepting hits they know won't cause long term problems. If you're not going to kill them it's necessary to inflict multiple serious crippling injuries to stop them just getting up and flying away."
And I suspect having a chunk of metal in the way will impair his healing just a little. Still odd that it broke. Is viltrumite flesh just that inimical to X-ionised metal or did Jevek give him the trashy rejects?

"How are you cutting them?"

"The blades undergo a process called 'x-ionisation'. They're razor sharp and… I thought they were pretty much indestructible. Something about viltrumite physiology makes them less effective than usual, but they're still my preferred way of harming them."
Must be one of those weird physics things they can do, like the 'superluminal flight in real space' trick.

Invincible flies over while Local Invincible tries to get through to Cecil. "Unless he's really mad. He used anti-matter on Vidor."

She blinks, then looks thoughtful.
Assuming they even recognise that 'Vidor' was a viltrumite. Then again, the context would suggest they were fighting, anyway.

I nod. "There's no reason why you couldn't make anti-matter yourself. Just make sure that it's contained by magnetic fields in a vacuum, because significant quantities of anti-matter aren't planet-friendly."

She nods. "I-. Look, I wanted to ask. I-. I had a brother. He-." She takes a moment to gather her thoughts. "He couldn't control his powers properly. I…"
Sadly, not an equivalent case. I don't know if she can examine the structure of his Ring, but if she could, that would give her quite the shock. 😏 And possibly Ideas.

I shake my head. "I don't think I'm his alter-ego, if that's what you're working towards asking. My earliest… Confirmable memory, is waking up in orbit. Before that I remember a normal life on a world without superpowers. It's not impossible that someone implanted fabricated memories into my mind, but it's not likely."
Sounds a bit complicated, even for enemies in this universe. So he's probably not some manner of sleeper agent, as we know full well...

Invincible smiles. "Hey, while we're taking a break, mind if I ask you a couple of questions?" Eve shakes her head. "You and.. your Invincible. You're together, right? She nods cautiously. "How do you make it work?"

Her gaze turns incredulous. "He didn't conquer Earth with his dad."
...Yeah, that's a big part of it, i would expect.

"Okay, but-." He looks aside, trying to work out how to put it. Omvincible chooses that moment to gurgle, and gets kicked in the head for his impertinence. At least that knocks him out. "I did, but I don't want to fight you-. Her. I thought if I made sure the planet got fixed-. A lot of places are nicer places to live than they were before the conquest. Objectively… Okay, it's not an overall improvement yet, but it's getting there! I mean, do you actually like Cecil?"
The man does make it hard for people to find him tolerable. Especially the ones he prepares Batman-level plans against in the name of protecting Humanity...

"No, I can't say I do."

"Because the rest of the government is just as bad. Governments. I had Lantern go through their databases for our public information broadcasts. And killing soldiers who ignore their government surrendering is even in line with the Geneva Conventions!"
...Having to say that doesn't really make it much better, Marky.

"Okay, look: I don't know her? But-" She frowns at him. "-I don't think you can conquer her planet and kill her friends and expect her to like you."

"But-."
Give it up, man, it's a lost cause.

"Even if the Viltrum Empire actually helps people. And if that's what they do, why conquer it in the first place? You think if alien spaceships showed up over a slum somewhere and started building nicer houses anyone would complain about it?"

"It's not-. I-."
Honestly, I doubt the vltrumites as they are now would bother to try that. The intellectual part of their people they overthrew and wiped out, maybe. But the remaining viltrumites are basically army grunts and officers whose diplomatic tactics come down to 'punch until it dies or surrenders, whichever happens first.'

Local Invincible looks up. "Okay, Cecil says he's gunna send some people-."

There's a wuuymm noise from.. just above us. I look up-.

As twenty zombots fall on our heads.
Now, this could be entirely innocent... They could be here to collect the disabled alternates.

Somehow, I suspect that even if they're here on support duty, at least one or two might find themselves punch-sploded by NotLocal!Mark before they can explain themselves... Which will only make Cecil more annoyed. Presumably their long-range teleporter isn't exactly accurate enough to put them on the ground in a non-hostile manner...

. Also, I wonder why this one is wearing the Omniman suit (And possibly a moustache?) Maybe he managed to kill his dad and took up his mantle to honour him

He may have been his dad's sidekick and wanted to look more like him.

There was one variant that had a mustache.

He was also one of the two that wore a Viltrumite uniform.

He was killed by Tech Jacket, a teen hero with a powerful alien armor, while they were fighting in space.

stronger.Though physical training probably helped. It could well be psychosomatic.

I have seen theories online that say that the reason the rest may have been weaker was because joining up with their dad made it so that they could rely on him if things got too intense.

Main Mark had to get better himself.

They also may not have done as good against the heroes of the main universe because they were overconfident, plus the heroes from their universe may not have had time to prepare before they attacked, while the ones from the main one knew that Viltrumites are threats.

It's not actually loud noises in general that hurt Viltrumites. It's specific frequencies of sound that mess them up, and from what I recall those frequencies aren't harmful to Human ears.

She should have some idea of this because Cecil previously felt like he had to use that sonic defense on Mark when Mark was getting unreasonably hostile. I mean, I assume she'd have heard about it anyway. Feels like something that would get mentioned to her.

But Eve isn't exactly what you'd call a smart fighter. Mostly because the writer didn't really know how to use her without making her too strong, given how ridiculous her power is, so she mostly just does really basic stuff in fights.

Yeah, just recently learned that 1 of the alternate invincibles has a really tragic back story. He basically went through the same fight as the main line invincible, but instead of backing down, his father handed him over to the viltramite empire where he was tortured for years and mind broken and then burned and horribly scarred. He also weres a viltramite costume I guess it is what he wore as a prisoner.

Hoping Cecil sent the zombots to carry the disabled invinci-clones, not to start shit.

But with him, it's a toss-up. He can be stupid sometimes.

Think about how his conversation with Mark, a person that he doesn't fully trust, would have gone.

•●•

Mark: Hey, Cecil, one of my alternate selves, you know the ones that were brought here to destroy the world and are currently doing things like killing millions, destroying cities and economies that will see thousands die homeless, told me that he wants to help us fight off the rest of these guys. Don't worry, he's cool. He has a guy called Janissary, probably named after the slave-soldiers the Ottoman Empire used, that vouches for him. And this alternate apparently knows how to snap people's necks without killing them.

...

Cecil: Donald.

Donald: Reanimen, sir.

Cecil: Yep. And see if you can get Mark to have an IQ test.

Donald: Understood.

•●•

Yeah.

Yeah.

And what are the Reanimen supposed to do against two Marks and some glowing minion who can 1v1 viltrumites?
To say nothing of Eve, who's obviously going to go to bat for her boyfriend.
Maybe he could teleport in a sonic weapon to deal with them, but we know that wouldn't work.
Reanimen are a roadbump to invincible. They're better than anything else he has available, but they're not enough to win the fight on their own.
Which is why he was so stupid to try to have them jump Mark in canon.

Cecil's best bet is hope that the new Invincible is friendly. Or at least amenible to just fucking off back to his home universe after helping out here for a bit.

Actually, i'm not sure why Paul's invincible even came, if he's willing to turn on angstrom so quickly and attack his own allies.
Isn't he stranded here now? Unless Paul analysed the dimensional portal and can just make his own.

Well. He knows his world is fucked.... And just got a chance to do right by the memory of the life he lost.

And he has Paul/Janissary.
Diplomacy and critical thinking skills.

Pewpew back up too.

The Reanimen are so far the best weapon the GDA has against Viltrumites.

They were able to kill the one that attacked the GDA and later snap the neck of the one in the Bulletproof costume.

As I mentioned in a post above, Cecil doesn't have many options left when the world is being destroyed.

Cecil's best bet is hope that the new Invincible is friendly. Or at least amenible to just fucking off back to his home universe after helping out here for a bit

So he just has to hope that a version that came with a bunch of other versions that are killing millions of people is somehow going to turn to their side?

Actually, i'm not sure why Paul's invincible even came, if he's willing to turn on angstrom so quickly and attack his own allies

He came to see his friends and mom.

He already visited this version of William, his best friend, and this versions mother.

Isn't he stranded here now? Unless Paul analysed the dimensional portal and can just make his own
Paul's Invincible asked him if he could mind control Angstrom.

So he just has to hope that a version that came with a bunch of other versions that are killing millions of people is somehow going to turn to their side?
I mean, yes? Yes, that's exactly what you do at least until you deal with a dozen of others that are actively wrecking shit.

He should already know about the sonic vulnerability of viltrumites. From the Vidor fight (Vidor's stopped moving. With the clouds he threw up he's having to concentrate to find me… Hearing, probably. The optimal time for a sonic attack, but none of the sonic weapons I know about are anything like powerful enough to cause a viltrumite more than mild irritation.

A construct wouldn't be so limited-. I guess I could fake manipulating sound waves directly.

I raise my hands and the dust buckles, clouds shooting away and giving me a brief view of blood squirting out Vidor's ears)

I think Paul's Invincible shouldn't have offered to meet with Cecil in person.

An invading invincible being willing to work with to fight the other invincible is believable, or atleast not impossible, and Cecil doesn't have unlimited heros and reanimen. He'd probably be willing to hold off on fighting until things are a bit less "on fire"

But asking to meet him in person instead of talking over a radio makes it look like a scheme to decapitate the defense's command structure after a frontal assault by another invader failed.

It absolutely is. Cecil regularly uses it to put himself on the ground exactly where he wants to be
Them teleporting from the sky could mean that either it isn't working properly, which is possible since their headquarters was demolished.

Or he may have wanted them to get the jump on them or have a better advantage if any of them are flying.

Yeah, any hope he has of rekindling a genuine relationship with his Eve are gone.

That bridge wasn't just burned.

It was destroyed at a subatomic level and if anything remained then it was banished to a universe that was collapsing.
To be fair, this is also an invincible who apparently didn't understand why his relationship with Amber didn't work, so expecting women to slot into his own preconceptions of what their relationship should be and being upset when they don't play along with what he wants is par for the course

Yes. Exactly.

It sucks ass to be powerless, but that's just how it is.
Sometimes you have to accept unlikely allies wherever you can get them.
Isn't that the entire justification for the reanimen?

Paul's version of mark being if not actually legitimately friendly to the local earth, then at the very least being willing to fight against his own allies is a resource that MUST be utilized to the fullest extent possible.

Like, imagine you're getting the shit kicked out of you by seven dudes, then one of those seven suddenly declares that he's switching sides and starts beating up on the other six.
Do you trust him?
No. Of course not.

But you you'd be a fucking moron to stick a knife in his back and provoke him into going right back to kicking the shit out of you.
Stick your knife into one of the other six dude's backs and then try to make your stand with this guy that you don't trust.
Use that motherfucker as a meatshield and if he turns on you, just hope that he does it at the end where you aren't fighting him and everyone else at the same time.

That doesn't mean that they're actually a good weapon.

Unfortunately they're practically his only weapon, so that's what he has to work with.

After they were already disabled by other stuff. sure.

They're still incredibly strong.

Yes. Exactly.

It sucks ass to be powerless, but that's just how it is.

Isn't that the entire justification for the reanimen

Cecil could at least control Sinclair and monitor him.

The alternate Mark on the other is a complete unknown.
