With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Unless he actually met some, I'm going with that.

He hosted them. We don't have confirmation that he directly interacted with them but they studied his coluan minion's brain by following her around for a while while she worked with him. And he was interested in them when he found out they were shapeshifting telepaths with an interest in Xenophilia so....

Unless he actually met some, I'm going with that.

Here's the source/quote

As I said, they're used to being in constant telepathic contact with one another. They don't have native faster than light travel, they don't have any contact with this part of the galaxy. They won't care about your commercial secrets, and..." I look away for a moment. "The memoirs of a member of their species who spent several decades as a pornographic performer on my world have recently been placed in wide circulation on their planet. I doubt that her personal life -no matter how interesting- could possibly arouse their interest."

"That-."

"Did I mention that they're also shapeshifters? Nearly fully protean?"

"As-. I.. don't think that will be an issue."

I'll be entirely honest, I didn't realize it was quite as strong as Warworld. I knew it was a capital ship, but there's a pretty big difference between "capital ship" and "moon ship" (or "planet ship").

As for Kryptonian science, I've never really had a great grasp on the "power scaling" of the various alien factions. I know they were one of the stronger factions, but is that Spider Guild-level, Psion-level, Reach-level, or Maltusian-level? Because there are pretty big gaps between each of those factions.

OL is willing to work with a Weaponer, because they more or less want the same thing -- to create really good weapons and use them. OL has an enemy he wants to destroy and an man to make him weapons. There's a difference between that and expecting Zod to make tactical decisions in the field.
Usually? Somewhere around Maltusian level.

The Controllers belong to the most advanced race in the universe.
The Controllers belong to the oldest race in the universe, not the most advanced.

If they wanted to it would be child's play to copy the Doomsday.
That's a bold assumption given it hasn't been stated yet in universe.

Of the Endless, Death, Destiny, and Destruction don't seem to have mortal agents working on their behalf. Depair allegedly had a hand in the destruction of Krypton in order to turn the survivor, Kal-el into a miserable, despairing lump. Which failed, since he is a symbol of hope for civilians and heroes alike.

Despair interfering with the Kryptonian navy though? Using an idiocy-debuff like this? Perhaps one of her hypothetical agents would, but she wouldn't do so directly.
That's certainly a possibility.

Though I would think any Despair effect would have been too strong for Orange Lantern to overcome.

Usually? Somewhere around Maltusian level.
Not even close.
The Controllers belong to the oldest race in the universe, not the most advanced.
Except it's been stated and shown multiple times that they're perhaps the most advanced race in the universe.
That's a bold assumption given it hasn't been stated yet in universe.

The real bold assumption is that you still think you know what's going on.

General reminder that there are several Elseworlds where the Kryptonian's don't turn insular and end up taking over pretty much everything.

Except it's been stated and shown multiple times that they're perhaps the most advanced race in the universe.
No, that would be the Monitors, and behind them the New Gods.

Also, you're seeming to forget that Zoat nerfed the Earth 16 Maltusian's to a galactic level instead of universal level.

This is not one of those Elseworlds.

No, that would be the Monitors, and behind them the New Gods.
The Monitors haven't appeared in this story, so their tech level is unknown.

The New Gods in this story apparently don't even use tech. They just let their connection to the Source do the work, like 40k Orcs and their psychic field.
Also, you're seeming to forget that Zoat nerfed the Earth 16 Maltusian's to a galactic level instead of universal level
The universe isn't that big in this story.

And if he did that to them then why wouldn't he do it for other species, like Kryptonians.

Also, you're seeming to forget that Zoat nerfed the Earth 16 Maltusian's to a galactic level instead of universal level.
In fairness that wasn't Zoat. It was Greg Weisman who nerfed the Maltusians.

Green Lantern territory only covering part of the Milky Way is canon to Young Justice.

Heck, if that's true then Zoat actually made them stronger since aside from the majority of the Milky Way, they also have Lanterns to a significant degree in two other galaxies.

Richard looks around at the ruins of Wombworld. "One planet, somewhat used."

"Yeah." I nod. Haven't bothered coming back here since we purged the place, though I know that Duke Oswin had a team cataloguing things. Between the damage Brimstone did, and what the fleet and Corps did during the final attack, any settlers would have to spend more time clearing up the mess rather than building from scratch. "But it's available, and I have massive reinforcements only a few minutes away."

I wave at the Orange Lanterns lurking around, who shamefacedly wave back before getting on with what Clarissi Dox actually sent them here to do. With Adam Blake back on Earth full time he's probably the only person in Vega who can actually understand the psion's higher level technologies. Unfortunately for him, he doesn't have time to spend indulging his personal curiosity. He also doesn't have enough specialists that he could spare some to come in his place.

"Is this the only option for Vega?"

"There's the Citadel Homeworld. It was barely habitable before the Orange Lantern Corps and I started bombarding it flat. Habitation would have to be subterranean, in sealed environments, and it's… Well, it's not ideal."

"And this is?"

"The air's breathable, the soil microbes are similar enough to Earth's that our plants could be planted directly without much issue, human mad scientists could probably go through the psions's stuff and learn from it, humans can breathe the air, gravity's about the same as Earth's…"

"What about the locals?"

"The psions originally came from Maltus. The few survivors got moved back there. Since they reproduce synthetically the actual number of survivors doesn't matter."

"Still. People might not like the fact that they're living somewhere from where the previous inhabitants were killed or exiled."

I nod. However much the psions deserved it, people can get a bit weird about that sort of thing. "The other advantage-" I take a thaumometer off my armour and hold it up. "-is that this region is just magical enough that the Atlanteans should be able to function."

Richard takes a look at the reading. "Barely, if I'm reading that correctly."

"Substantially above average. And they'll need something to work with when they experiment."

"Worth considering, then. Is there truly nowhere else in Vega?"

"Nowhere uninhabited. There's one world with mollusc people, but they actually are native, and… They haven't actually spread all that far and we could dominate them on their own world pretty easily, but…"

"Yes."

"Or we could probably move them without it being too disruptive."

He gives me a dubious look.

"I know, but… My first response to primitive cultures is to uplift them, and they're pre-metallurgy."

"What about worlds outside of Vega?"

"None that I know of that meet our requirements. It looks like thaumic activity increases the chance of complex life to evolve…" Hm. "Okay, there's Odym, but I don't really want to settle there."

"What's wrong with it?"

"Nothing. That's the problem. I'd say that it's a beautiful place untouched by intelligent design, except for the fact that every part of it basically throws its own natural beauty in your face so hard that I suspect that it's artificial. Farming and mining would wreck it."

"It usually does. You'll recall that I lived through the Industrial Revolution."

"More than normal. It's a beautiful place, but I don't think it would survive exposure to actual evolution." I narrow my eyes slightly. "The introduction of rats to Australasia was before your time, wasn't it?"

"By a few million years. But if you mean the introduction of black and brown rats from European vessels, it was ongoing early in my life. Could we farm the local creatures?"

"I mean… Yes..."

"Alright." He raises his hands in mock surrender. "You're not keen. What are our other options?"

"Tartarath isn't all that far from Earth. The native intelligent species is close to extinction and doesn't live there anymore."

"Why's that?"

"Because a crazy warlord of theirs killed most of them and enslaved the rest and led them on a campaign of murder that lasted years. Most advanced species in our Sector felt their wrath at some point, and the few who remain are in hiding for fear of retaliation. A general abhorrence of their people is also why the planet's available for habitation; no one else wants to live there."

"Will they react badly to us doing so?"

I wiggle my right hand from side to side. "Maybe? As long as we make it clear that we're not the original inhabitants, I doubt it."

"But I assume that it's part of the galaxy-wide magic dead zone."

"Yep. It would be easy enough to send a fleet to… But the other problem is that it's in the general direction of Thanagar and they might have an eye on it."

"Ah." He taps the head of his cane against his chin. "And in any case, perhaps somewhere further away might be better? In order to ensure that a potential attacker can't immediately locate it after defeating our best defence?"

Hm…

"Ring, contact Lantern Jordan."

"By your command."

Richard raises his eyebrows. "An idea?"

"Possibly. Failing that, I can ask the Controllers for their records on thaumically active worlds with no intelligent species on them."

Jordan's head appears. "What do you-? Oh, it's you. Is this about the Reach?"

"Not directly. I was just wondering; that planet you befriended back when you were starting out. Do you know where it is?"

"Roughly, yeah." His eyes narrow. "Wwwhy?"

"I was thinking of asking it how it felt about colonisation."

"It's fine with it, but you missed the boat. The Green Lantern Corps has been using it as a resettlement centre for refugees. It likes having people around."

"Rats." I nod in acknowledgement. "Okay, thank you for letting me know."

"Why do you want a colony?"

"To make sure that human civilisation carries on if anything happens to Earth. Given how things went for Krypton…"

"Huh. Okay." He frowns thoughtfully. "There aren't really… Any good worlds in this Sector, not if you don't wanna share. It's basically just Tartarath, and I sure wouldn't wanna live there."

"Nowhere else comes to mind?"

"I guess there's moons we could terraform. Is that what you're looking for?"

"No, I guess we'll have to look further afield. Thank you-."

"Ah, hey. This sounds like something I should know about. Mind keeping me in the loop?"

"No problem at all. We were going to do a public announcement anyway." I nod. "I'll let you know when I have something."

He nods, and ends the call.

I sigh. "Alright. Controllers it is."

Richard looks around at the ruins of Wombworld. "One planet, somewhat used."
Ah, the Psion 'homeworld', more or less. Or what's left of it after a few thousand Orange Lanterns and a coalition fleet finished with it, anyway. Might need a bit if renovations if they're looking at it for colonisation.

Since in stellar terms, Tamaran and the Corps is right next door. But, as he notes, it's a hell of a fixer-upper.

So he just sends Lanterns who seem like they might be good at finding useful things and have them poke around. Wasteful, but it could serve as some manner of punishment detail, perhaps.

"Is this the only option for Vega?"

"There's the Citadel Homeworld. It was barely habitable before the Orange Lantern Corps and I started bombarding it flat. Habitation would have to be subterranean, in sealed environments, and it's… Well, it's not ideal."
I'm picturing a burnt-out husk.

"And this is?"

"The air's breathable, the soil microbes are similar enough to Earth's that our plants could be planted directly without much issue, human mad scientists could probably go through the psions's stuff and learn from it, humans can breathe the air, gravity's about the same as Earth's…"
A perfect little garden world, then. Just a bit of a project.

"What about the locals?"

"The psions originally came from Maltus. The few survivors got moved back there. Since they reproduce synthetically the actual number of survivors doesn't matter."
And it's doubtful their creators would ever bother letting them come back.

Ah, that is a big bonus, given the rather flat state of the galaxy's magical ecology.

Richard takes a look at the reading. "Barely, if I'm reading that correctly."

"Substantially above average. And they'll need something to work with when they experiment."
Though I imagine they'd have to work with near-famine levels of thaumic energies. I suppose they'd develop skills at working with minute levels of power...

"Worth considering, then. Is there truly nowhere else in Vega?"

"Nowhere uninhabited. There's one world with mollusc people, but they actually are native, and… They haven't actually spread all that far and we could dominate them on their own world pretty easily, but…"
I imagine it's a bit of a wet place.

"Yes."

"Or we could probably move them without it being too disruptive."
Eh, that sort of thing rarely ends well. I suspect they'd be rather traumatised, no matter how gentle the transfer.

He gives me a dubious look.

"I know, but… My first response to primitive cultures is to uplift them, and they're pre-metallurgy."
So very much below the desirable level of profitable return on his investment.

"What about worlds outside of Vega?"

"None that I know of that meet our requirements. It looks like thaumic activity increases the chance of complex life to evolve…" Hm. "Okay, there's Odym, but I don't really want to settle there."
Odym... Future home base of the Blue Lantern Corps. Could be a bit of a butterfly.

"What's wrong with it?"

"Nothing. That's the problem. I'd say that it's a beautiful place untouched by intelligent design, except for the fact that every part of it basically throws its own natural beauty in your face so hard that I suspect that it's artificial. Farming and mining would wreck it."
And that sort of thing also suggests someone expects to be coming back to occupy it, too. I don't think you can claim squatter's rights on an entire planet.

"It usually does. You'll recall that I lived through the Industrial Revolution."

"More than normal. It's a beautiful place, but I don't think it would survive exposure to actual evolution." I narrow my eyes slightly. "The introduction of rats to Australasia was before your time, wasn't it?"
Ah, yes. Invasive species. A lesson humanity has been taught repeatedly, and it's only barely sticking.

"By a few million years. But if you mean the introduction of black and brown rats from European vessels, it was ongoing early in my life. Could we farm the local creatures?"

"I mean… Yes..."
But they're so pleasant, you would feel terrible about it?

"Alright." He raises his hands in mock surrender. "You're not keen. What are our other options?"

"Tartarath isn't all that far from Earth. The native intelligent species is close to extinction and doesn't live there anymore."

"Why's that?"
Heh. An amusing bit of symmetry between parallel universes.

And anyone moving in would probably be tarred with the same brush as the previous owners.

"Will they react badly to us doing so?"

I wiggle my right hand from side to side. "Maybe? As long as we make it clear that we're not the original inhabitants, I doubt it."
Good luck with that. Fortunately, they did vary quite a bit form humans.

"But I assume that it's part of the galaxy-wide magic dead zone."

"Yep. It would be easy enough to send a fleet to… But the other problem is that it's in the general direction of Thanagar and they might have an eye on it."
And the Renegade doesn't quite have the same friendly relationship with Thanagar as the Paragon does. That would probably seen as an aggressive move.

"Ah." He taps the head of his cane against his chin. "And in any case, perhaps somewhere further away might be better? In order to ensure that a potential attackers can't immediately locate it after defeating our best defence?"

Hm…
These are meant to be racial boltholes, not pleasant day-trip destinations, after all.

"Ring, contact Lantern Jordan."

"By your command."

Richard raises his eyebrows. "An idea?"
If he can persuade Hal to help out, he could probably coordinate with the Greenie's star maps.

"Possibly. Failing that, I can ask the Controllers for their records on thaumically active worlds with no intelligent species on the,."

Jordan's head appears. "What do you-? Oh, it's you. Is this about the Reach?"
Ah, that antagonistic association. The Renegade's not made a lot of friends out here, has he?

"Not directly. I was just wondering; that planet you befriended back when you were starting out. Do you know where it is?"

"Roughly, yeah." His eyes narrow. "Wwwhy?"
No doubt very suspicious of what he's up to.

"I was thinking of asking it how it felt about colonisation."

"It's fine with it, but you missed the boat. The Green Lantern Corps has been using it as a resettlement centre for refugees. It likes having people around."
Damn. Good to know it's not lonely, but still...

"Rats." I nod in acknowledgement. "Okay, thank you for letting me know."

"Why do you want a colony?"
Oh, not him directly, of course.

At least the explanation is reasonable. Some people wouldn't trust him on that.

"Nowhere else comes to mind?"

"I guess there's moons we could terraform. Is that what you're looking for?"
Eh, not the same atmosphere to them as claiming an entire world...

"No, I guess we'll have to look further afield. Thank you-."

"Ah, hey. This sounds like something I should know about. Mind keeping me in the loop?"
If only to avoid stepping on anyone's toes in terms of prior claims.

"No problem at all. We were going to do a public announcement anyway." I nod. "I'll let you know when I have something."

He nods, and ends the call.

I sigh. "Alright. Controllers it is."
I'm sure they'd be happy to customise some planets for you... For a price.

Ah, the surveying phase of expansion. And the Renegade looking to expand the gameplay from superhero RPG into galactic 4X grand strategy... Somehow I doubt the search will be as easy as he might have expected. All the good real estate will have been snapped up by previous starfaring cultures by now, and they'd likely make for poor neighbours anyway.

I'm picturing a burnt-out husk.
More 'barren, lifeless hunk of floating rock' really. There was never anything much living on it naturally.
I imagine it's a bit of a wet place.
No, not really. You remember, it's the males look like standard humanoids and the females are slugs. And the reproduce by fucking and then killing the slug females.
Ah, that antagonistic association. The Renegade's not made a lot of friends out here, has he?
No, he actually gets on okay with Jordan.
Thank you, corrected.

Just settle Odym.

Not wanting to settle a place that you've admitted is a perfect candidate because it's pretty and you think settling it will ruin that is really stupid. Especially considering why they're seeking out candidates for colonization.

Just set them up with cleaner, environmentally friendly technologies and get over it.

Heh. Got to admit, the angel stuff hits rather differently now given what happened in Peacemaker series 2.
Honestly, I can see Flagg meeting Ian and knowing that his son is in Heaven could have made him reconsider a lot of things and made him choose a less aggressive path.

Plus, in Peacemaker Waller already fell from her position, but in this story and Creature Commandos she was still in power until Flagg and Ian took her down, so any grudge he may have had about his son's death would have been resolved when she was arrested, so he's not going to be sending Chris to another universe or helping Luthor.

I wonder if The Shade's genocide will cause the shadow champions (hermits) of Talok IV to investigate. Lyssa Drak was a heretic who wanted to join Sinestro/was commissioned to corrupt a ring, but the normal shadow sorcerers might care about esoteric magical visions of some proto-Darkness God like Richard.

Of course, if travelers or mystical stuff doesn't get the information to them, then there's no connection there. No reason for them to learn about the battles.

Lyssa Drak didn't join Paragon!Paul's corps, but there was another shadow user, presumably from the same world and race... Who I can't find. The girl who was sacrificed by her planet for experimentation, who wanted to join the corps. I'm bringing her up because she could have joined Grayven's corps. She might investigate independently.
