With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

So it's stuck here, and doesn't want to be, and even though the smart thing to do would be to pretend to be nice so that we would take it away, it attacked us. So… Maybe it knows that it can't get away? And it's just taking a shot because that's all it can do

Or maybe it thinks that if it can punish you then whoever or whatever imprisoned it will release it.

If true they are in a lot of trouble, because only the innocent can defeat justice.

Sadly that's not true.

And I highly doubt this thing is justice.

Wow, that was a really interesting segment! Iname has a lot of depht to her, and this did a good job at exploring that. It's amazing how much you can learn about someone by seeing things from their perspective. Hope we get to see more of her P.O.V. in the future.

The naginata smashes through the wall behind me and I don't wait, I just run out, following the naginata. Outside, it's still raining, and my weapon-. It didn't even go that far. That's weird. I sheath my kama, pick up my naginata, and look around very carefully in case my house has caught up with me again.

Thanks for posting this clip as this seems like what this thing's whole plan is.
I think that's the opposite of what its plan is. Iname mentions that it could have pretended to be nice so that they'd take it with, and yet instead it attacked immediately. She reckons that it is somehow trapped on this planet so completely that it can't escape even with their help.

Iname is insane, I wouldn't take anything she says with a pinch of salt.

Iname is insane, I wouldn't take anything she says with a pinch of salt.

Being insane does not automatically equal being stupid. Besides, questionnable sanity aside, her arguments were sound, and she was right about the entity lying to her.

Besides, there's plenty of other characters in this story who are insane too, yet still somehow manage to be smart. Even a broken clock can be right twice a day.

The problem with that idea is that her arguments were not sound, because they were based entirely around the assumption that whatever is doing this would want to leave.

She may have thought that it would want to leave because it seems like there's no point in staying.

The planet lacks any life and this thing apparently likes torturing people due to its view about justice.

If it likes doing that then why not leave and go to worlds that actually have people so that it can punish them.

Heck, here's the part when she thinks about that.

I know you don't read the story, so I thought I'd show it to you.

And it was trying to scare me. Trying to make me feel bad about the things it thinks I shouldn't have done. But… Why? And why not on Earth? Is it stuck here? That's the only thing that seems to make sense… But… It should be able to go into the Dream, shouldn't it? Or whatever version of Hell exists here, and get to Earth that way? So it is stuck here?

So it's stuck here, and doesn't want to be, and even though the smart thing to do would be to pretend to be nice so that we would take it away, it attacked us. So… Maybe it knows that it can't get away? And it's just taking a shot because that's all it can do

It obviously has no problem lying to people, so the fact that it didn't try to trick them into taking it with them could strongly indicate that it thinks that there's no way out.

Iname is trying to figure things out, but not strongly committed to her conclusions. If new evidence arrives, she'll update her conclusions on the entity. Personally I like a character willing to engage in some theorizing. Even if she's wrong, she's at least got a model she can test the entity's future behavior against.

It's funny that the story had to arbitrarily turn off her powers just to make things interesting. Flash level speed with an a killer's mentality is pretty terrifying. She even confirmed that she can vibrate through solid objects just like the Flash. There's a lot of situations where she just flat out wins most fights.

No, she can't see any reason to stay.

That doesn't mean it doesn't have one.

I get what you're trying to say, but we can't really blame Iname for coming to such conclusions based on her own observations. If those observations are wrong, it just means that she's wrong. Besides, it's not like any of us wouldn't have come to similar conclusions if we were in her place. As far as she knows, the entity's apparent goals are at odds with its staying on this planet, so logically, it makes sense for her to assume that the entity wants to leave, but can't.

Honestly, I don't know. Sometimes, not every problem can be solved by being really fast. In fact, too much speed can sometimes be a bad thing.

Case in point:

Had a little thought about the angry Anarky and the murderous Nylor Truggs tonight. They both might be tempted to cut up Red Torpedo (Dr James Lockhart) for his precious metal parts. I'm not sure if he's much more valuable than the weather-alterirng drones we've seen a few times, but if the League's files on him have been exposed? Well, Red Tornado and Dannette are the only ones who would really give a damn.

And Danette isn't even in the US these days.

If he's rescued or frees himself, then reflecting on that, Machinehead, or the Antilife could help him get over this unending retirement he's restricted himself to.

Now you've got me thinking these two working together each thinking they can use the other before getting away scot-free. Honestly speaking, I hope Paul is able to resolve at least one of them in the near future, as I think they can each provide a unique challenge based on their resources and knowledge bases.

"None of 'em?"

Corporal Taggart doesn't look surprised or upset, but there is a little… Disappointment, in his expression.

I shake my head. "My scans aren't reliable around this amount of raw magic, but… No. As far as I can tell, there are no survivors. Sandro?"

"I do have a surfeit of dark energy to work with, but other beings are making use of it as well."

"Necromancers?"

"That's difficult to say. Technically speaking, commanding a demon to possess a corpse is not necromancy. Corporal Taggart, were you given any idea of how many people were working here?"

He shrugs. "Couple thousand. Only about two hundred marines."

Endymion frowns. "The entirety of Deimos has only two hundred soldiers?"

"Yeah? Honestly, it always sounded like way too many to me. Two hundred jarheads just to keep a thousand engineers and scientists in line? What were the brass expecting?"

Endymion looks at the corpse of an invisible pinkie which he just finished vivisecting with his sword. "Demons?"

"The two hundred wasn't anything like enough, that's my point. It's too many for policing and not enough to stop an invasion."

Mazikeen nods. "He's right. Was the number increased recently? Perhaps your superiors got an inkling that something wasn't right."

He rolls his eyes at her. "Sure. I'll just call up the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and ask, shall I?"

Endymion frowns. "You mean to say that the government of Earth hasn't been informed?"

"I don't think they missed a moon going-." Corporal Taggart frowns in bewilderment. "What d'yah mean 'the government of Earth'? Like… A single government?"

Endymion sighs, looking down for a moment. "No, I suppose that would have been too much to hope for."

"America's got the only space program worth talkin' about. But, like I said, a moon's gone missing. Anyone with a space telescope's gunna see it, an' everyone knows that the U.S. is the only country with anything on Deimos. We're the first place anyone's gunna go lookin' for an answer." He thinks for a moment, looking up at the ceiling of the refinery we're standing in. "Mars Command got an update from the platoon they sent, but those chumps all died without sending anything back beyond, you know, 'contact' and 'help help it's claws are up my ass'."

I look around. Parts of the refinery have the dull brown or grey colour of standard U.A.C. wall panels, but here's a lot of bare stone walls, as well as areas that appear to have been… 'Demonified', with the stone becoming unnaturally smooth and… 'Growing' leering demonic faces. And that's before we get into the fact that some sort of radioactive green goo has bubbled up from the lower levels. It's not a problem for any of us at the moment, but… It's confusing. There isn't a lot of radioactive material on Deimos -at least, there isn't supposed to be- and magic doesn't tend to make things emit gamma radiation. There can be plenty of other exotic results from exposing things to raw magic, but normal ionising radiation? No.

So either there's a material here that reacts to raw magic by becoming radioactive -which is pretty darn interesting- or the demons just brought a load of highly radioactive liquid here for some reason. Or the humans did, I guess, but that makes even less sense. I could see them bringing radioactive metal for a power plant, but they'd have every reason to make sure that radioactive liquid didn't escape. And humans usually make things fail safe rather than fail deadly, so I doubt that it's simple neglect…

Endymion thinks for a moment. "When will Mars send reinforcements to Phobos?"

"Ah… They probably won't. There aren't all that many marines up here total. When no one reports back, they'll probably call in a patrol ship. The ship will do a flyby, then they'll send in more marines. Maybe some armour. And they'll have ships so they can just lift off before they get overrun."

"That's a reasonable tactic."

"Problem is, we don't keep ships near Mars, 'cause… Why would we? There's some checking out potential mining sites out-system and some around Earth. Government's not gunna wanna move the ones near Earth, which is probably a good call."

I nod. "Earth's about as far from Mars as it gets right now. Any ships would take a long time to get here, ignoring the fuel costs."

Corporal Taggart nods. "Right, an' the outer system ships ain't exactly close neither. Probably gunna need a few months t' get there."

Endymion looks puzzled. "But all of the demons are slain."

Mazikeen shakes her head. "They were researching teleportation. We should not assume that the forces of Hell cannot take advantage of any teleportation stations they captured here, or that we missed. Besides, how would Mars know without sending another of their limited quantity of spacecraft?"

There's a quiet thud as Sandro allows the Baron of Hell we found here to collapse to the ground. "Learn anything?"

"Apparently they were using material extracted from here for some sort of ritual." He strolls closer. "It didn't know what. Oh, and it seems that the 'Eldest' is present on Deimos at the moment, leading the ritual."

"Alright. Did it say where?"

He looks at the wall. "No, but given the clear distinction between the two styles of architecture, I don't imagine it will be hard to locate the site. Corporal Taggart, I have a question."

"Shoot."

"Why are there explosive barrels located in just about every structure we have entered? That would seem like a curious choice for a military structure."

"No fuckin' clue. I was just here for a Court Martial, remember? They didn't explain the niceties of their interior design scheme."

"Ah. No, I suppose that's reasonable. I just hope that we have time to-."

The air… Shudders.

My rings gutter and die.

Mazikeen doubles over, clutching her mask.

The lights in Sandro's eye sockets go out, and his bones collapse ligamentlessly to the floor.

Endymion shakes his head as if dazed, but appears otherwise unimpeded.

Corporal Taggart looks at us each in turn. "The fuck?"

"I guess that was the ritual." I trigger my armour's flight system, and… Yes, that's still working. Crumbler gauntlets? Ah, no, those aren't. That seems… Arbitrary, but I suppose that's how weird magic rituals go when you don't understand their operating principles. "Corporal, did you leave that backpack where you found it?"

"Yeah? Why?"

"We're going to need something to put Sandro in, just in case that's something that he can recover from. Mazikeen?"

"Yes. Yes."

"I've got a conventional painkiller if you need it. Otherwise…" I walk over to where one of the demon zombies dropped his shotgun. "I've got mundane conventional weapons. Do you know how to use them?"

She snatches it from me, picks up a box of shotgun shells that someone from U.A.C. dropped on the floor at some point, and then starts sliding shells into the magazine tube.

"Good show. Endymion?"

"In my first life, I used magic and the sword. Few people in Japan carry guns. I'll manage better with my sword."

"Okay. Corporal, you take the lead. It looks like we're doing this the conventional way."

Corporal Taggart doesn't look surprised or upset, but there is a little… Disappointment, in his expression.
Yeah, there's not exactly a lot of survivors in the games, either. In fact, the player character (and any alternate protagonists and Co-op partners) are the only persons on Phobos and Deimos who aren't demons or zombies. Makes for acceptable targets, if nothing else.

I shake my head. "My scans aren't reliable around this amount of raw magic, but… No. As far as I can tell, there are no survivors. Sandro?"

"I do have a surfeit of dark energy to work with, but other beings are making use of it as well."
Well, that's not good. That's most likely a senior demon, such as the Cyberdemon boss.

"Necromancers?"

"That's difficult to say. Technically speaking, commanding a demon to possess a corpse is not necromancy. Corporal Taggart, were you given any idea of how many people were working here?"
And more importantly, how many would be carrying guns? Because I doubt a scientist will be nearly the same threat as a marine in heavy combat armour.

He shrugs. "Couple thousand. Only about two hundred marines."

Endymion frowns. "The entirety of Deimos has only two hundred soldiers?"
I mean, it's not a large moon, and probably not a large base.

"Yeah? Honestly, it always sounded like way too many to me. Two hundred jarheads just to keep a thousand engineers and scientists in line? What were the brass expecting?"

Endymion looks at the corpse of an invisible pinkie which he just finished vivisecting with his sword. "Demons?"
I got the feeling those in charge didn't expect the denizens of hell to react to what they were doing. A lot of them may not even have known that the 'alternate dimension' they were studying was populated.

"The two hundred wasn't anything like enough, that's my point. It's too many for policing and not enough to stop an invasion."

Mazikeen nods. "He's right. Was the number increased recently? Perhaps your superiors got an inkling that someone wasn't right,"
That might make more sense. Remote observation of local movements within Hell via drone overflight could have been a thing.

He rolls his eyes at her. "Sure. I'll just call up the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs and ask, shall I?"

Endymion frowns. "You mean to say that the government of Earth hasn't been informed?"
If the timelines are anything to go by, Earth is having its own demon problems right now.

"I don't think they missed a moon going-." Corporal Taggart frowns in bewilderment. "What d'yah mean 'the government of Earth'? Like… A single government?"

Endymion sighs, looking down for a moment. "No, I suppose that would have been too much to hope for."
Usually not a thing in most sci-fi settings that haven't had a cataclysmic war that united Earth in its backstory. Though it's likely to be formed in the wake of this debacle.

That sounds like a rather different sort of Doom WAD. And a very bad time for everyone on the receiving end.

No.
'Hurt floors' are a common feature of Doom levels, be it radioactive goo, boiling blood or crusted-over lava. Usually overcome by hazard suits or god-mode.

So either there's a material here that react to raw magic by becoming radioactive -which is pretty darn interesting- or the demons just brought a load of highly radioactive liquid here for some reason. Or the humans did, I guess, but that makes even less sense. I could see them bringing radioactive metal for a power plant, but they'd have every reason to make sure that radioactive liquid didn't escape. And humans usually make things fail safe rather than fail deadly, so I doubt that it's simple neglect…
More likely malicious action by demons. They never seem to take damage from the hurt floors, after all. 😒

Hopefully after directing some fire at the ground when they see the demons...

"That's a reasonable tactic."

"Problem is, we don't keep ships near Mars, 'cause… Why would we? There's some checking out potential mining sites out-system and some around Earth. Government's not gunna wanna move the ones near Earth, which is probably a good call."
So it might be a few days weeks months before anyone gets here, at the minimum. Sounds like you guys are on your own.

All the local demons. Nothing to stop more from coming through portals. Even if you closed the last one with a delayed nuke or something, they'd just force them open from the Hell side now that it's known they can open them.

Mazikeen shakes her head. "They were researching teleportation. We should not assume that the forces of Hell cannot take advantage of any teleportation stations they captured here, or that we missed. Besides, how would Mars know without sending another of their limited quantity of spacecraft?"
And with Deimos in Hell proper, they might well be able to serve as a waypoint for Demon forces headed to Phobos or Earth.

Well, that's not good. Time to go speed-run the Cyberdemon. Watch out for rockets! 😈

"Alright. Did it say where?"

He looks at the wall. "No, but given the clear distinction between the two styles of architecture, I don't imagine it will be hard to locate the site. Corporal Taggart, I have a question."
And a little poking around might net you plasma guns. No BFG9000 until Episode 3, sadly.

"Shoot."

"Why are there explosive barrels located in just about every structure we have entered? That would seem like a curious choice for a military structure."
Ha! Amusing that the fantasy-world liche notices that little mainstay of the shooter genre...

"No fuckin' clue. I was just here for a Court Martial, remember? They didn't explain the niceties of their interior design scheme."

"Ah. No, I suppose that's reasonable. I just hope that we have time to-."
If nothing else, they serve as useful fragmentation grenades. One good shot with a hitscan weapon like the railguns...

The air… Shudders.

My rings gutter and die.
...Oh, that's just the worst thing that could have happened.

Mazikeen doubles over, clutching her mask.

The lights in Sandor's eye sockets go out, and his bones collapse ligamentlessly to the floor.
I'd say the Cyberdemon just let lose some kind of anti-magical spell across Deimos. Given that the Rings are technically supernatural, Mazikeen relies a lot on magical power and Sandro is, well, an animate skeleton...

Endymion shakes his head as if dazed, but appears otherwise unimpeded.

Corporal Taggart looks at us each in turn. "The fuck?"
Someone just turned your god-mode off. Let's hope you weren't at too high a difficulty level before.

Seems to be any 'supernatural' technology. I assume the flight system is more 'small jump-jets' than 'anti-gravity motor unit'.

"Yeah? Why?"

"We're going to need something to put Sandro in, just in case that's something that he can recover from. Mazikeen?"
Might want to grab more backpacks, you'll need all the ammo you can carry.

"Yes. Yes."

"I've got a conventional painkiller if you need it. Otherwise…" I walk over to where one of the demon zombies dropped his shotgun. "I've got mundane conventional weapons. Do you know how to use them?"
Probably a good idea to also learn how to use the local medical kits.

She snatches it from me, picks up a box of shotgun shells that someone from U.A.C. dropped on the floor at some point, and then starts sliding shells into the magazine tube.

"Good show. Endymion?"
One thing the games kind of gloss over for everything except the Super Shotgun: Reloading. No magazines, no animations, just a feed from ammo supply straight into weapons... Until you run out of ammo. 😈

"In my first life, I used magic and the sword. Few people in Japan carry guns. I'll manage better with my sword."

"Okay. Corporal, you take the lead. It looks like we're doing this the conventional way."
And now it descends into a basic co-op game. Except one player is sticking with melee weapons only (with a sword rather than brass knuckles or chainsaw, at least...)

Well, then. Time to Rip and Tear the Huge Guts. And since it seems OL never played the full game, he's going to be going in as blind as the rest of them. Hopefully once the Cyberdemon gets gibbed, his Ring come back online, or clearing the rest of the series will be a pain. Especially if they need to get to the end of Episode 3 to find Angelica...

I wonder what the ritual the demons did is for? I'm not very familiar with Doom so I don't know if it's a canon thing, but the group just arrived. I doubt the ritual was specifically aimed towards them to shut off their out-of-context abilities.

Also. I haven't read this whole story, so I apologize if this question has been answered before, but has Paul not gotten some form of protection against magic for his ring? I feel like from what I've read it's come up several times.

I believe it should be the invasion of Earth; as following the normal timeline Doom Guy fights through Phobos in Episode 1, then through Deimos above Hell in Episode 2 to defeat the Cyberdemon, then across the plains of Hell in Episode 3 to defeat the Spider Mastermind.

After defeating the Spider Mastermind, he discovers a portal to Earth that the Spider Mastermind was guarding and realizes that Earth has been invaded by the demons, which leads into Episode 4\Doom II where he fights his way across Earth to save the last remaining humans and defeat the Icon of Sin.

Doom II is where things diverge in the books: Instead of saving the last remaining humans and allowing them to escape on a spaceship, then hunting down the Icon of Sin, in the books the humans are contacted by aliens who offer to save them, so Taggert has to take his little group and steal a spaceship and fly to Phobos to contact the aliens.

After which the story gets very stupid.

'something'?
And replace comma with full stop.

Good call, whoever it was that predicted this would happen near the start of this episode.

So an almost court marshaled. marine, a consort of Lucifer, a sword weilding magical man, and a partally powered orange latern took a trek across a moon to rescue an redeemed demon while carrying an unconscious lich with them.......

Sounds like a joke in search of a punchline.

Course they had to turn off "invincible" mode and actually play the game at some point.

Endymion's not good with guns? No problem! Just give him…the Great Communicator!
