(Partially) fixing the tag system

If so, then you might want to delay merging the tags until then, so you don't lose that information now and can use it later.
I'm only merging semantically identical things, and in the process they'll become hard-synonyms (where recreating them converts them once more). That information is preserved, and hard-synonyms can be revoked or moved around.

Tags that are very close in meaning, but have minor distinctions or flavour worth preserving, I'm making synonyms, where searching/excluding one synonym searches/excludes the entire group (exceptions detailed in the 'how-to tags' threadmark).

Tags that I would ideally have imply other tags, like 'worm au' having the parent tags 'worm' and 'au', I'm largely not touching right now.

Oh god it's finally happening thank you! I'm gonna give my own list of the Fate subseries to be merged too. I'm not sure how shit like "x au" and "x elements" are going to be handled so I didn't bother including them.

{fate - fate series} fate series

{fsn - f/sn - fate stay night - fate stay/night - fate/stay night} fate/stay night (rant: who made that 4th one? why there's 3 pages of it? are you people stupid?)

{fate zero - fate/zero} fate/zero

{fate apocrypha - fate/apocrypha} fate/apocrypha

{fate extra - fate/extra - fate/extra/ccc/extella/link} fate/extra

{fate strange fake - fate/strange} fate/strange fake

{fgo - fate grand order - fate/grand order} fate/grand order (note: there's 3 different variations of "fgo part 2 ending spoilers" tags that probably dont need to be included)

(prisma illya - "fate/kaleid liner prisma illya - oath under snow"} fate/kaleid liner prisma illya (note: I'm surprised "prillya" isnt also a tag, so I'll suggest it probably should be made and included for future proofing just in case)

Good stuff. Reading the tags of https://forum.questionablequesting.com/threads/i-saw-it-coming-from-far-away-fgo.39321/ showed the author using all 3 versions of that fgo tag. Insanity!

Updated the Suggested Tags threads (1, 2) with a selection from the first batch. For usability, I didn't include every tag I've merged/Synonymised, just some highlights. I'm gonna keep a longer list in this threadmark, and link to it there.

What is a 'genre' and what is an 'element' is blurry at the edges, but it doesn't overly matter if I'm a bit arbitrary here. I also didn't include the 'non-con' variants in the Creative Writing thread.

Open to feedback with regard to how I formatted those threads.

Just making sure so ignore me if it's settled already; do we have a protagonist tag for "Non-Human" protags?

It's a lot faster now, but this batch is big enough that it's still not something I'm finishing in one go, turns out. Done all the mergers up to 'femdom', will finish the rest tomorrow.

I idly added-
'{non-human protagonist - nonhuman protagonist - non-human mc} non-human protag
-while collecting the second batch, which I'll be finishing mergers for tomorrow, but I haven't done a deep dive for 'non-human' variants (or really any of the more exotic 'X-protag') tags yet.

Done all the mergers, and all the 'smut' type synonyms.

'Smut' now has 3,070 threads linked (2nd biggest tag in the cloud), 'pure smut' is 125 threads, 'sex and violence' 51 threads, 'plot and porn' 714 threads, 'plot before porn' 988 threads, 'eventual smut' 572 threads, 'possible smut' 361 threads, and 'sfw' is 138 threads.

It should be much easier to find porn on QQ now. Will probably finish the rest of the synonyms tomorrow.

Done all the synonymising and merging for the second batch.

Noting this partially for myself: I now have to update the synonym groups list, select a bunch of the new Canonical tags for the Suggested Tags threads, update the longer tag list, and… probably also go back and look at the first batch, and make the tags I'd merged hard-synonyms.

After all that, I'll look at gathering the next batch.

Second Batch Finished, Suggestions For Third New
Noting this partially for myself: I now have to update the synonym groups list, select a bunch of the new Canonical tags for the Suggested Tags threads, update the longer tag list,
Updated all.

I've still got to go back and make the first batch's mergers into hard-synonyms, but in the meantime-

I'm inclined to make 'fandoms' and 'genres' the focus of the third batch. At the moment, relevant leads include:

If anyone can suggest other things in those categories to look into, nuances to look out for, or something else that seems equal in priority to fandom/genre, while I'm sorting the first batch's hard-synonyms, please do.

It might be a good idea to group all the Celestial CYOA's specifically together into one fandom as well. They all have similar gimmicks and feel similar to eachother but become a pain to sort out or search for.
I don't think I've ever read a Celestial CYOA fic, and I don't hang around in the CYOA threads, so basically anything you can tell me about Celestial stuff would be new and useful information to me.

Edit:

Just searching 'celestial' brings up all these tags, some of which are likely unrelated, but most of which I have no context for:
celestial
celestial being
celestial bordello
celestial bureaucracy
celestial catalog
celestial cauldron
celestial chaos
celestial crab bucket
celestial debauchery
celestial dojo

I've read a few and then they got rather stale to me personally. The whole concept derives from a god giving the main character a sudo-system that grants the ability to earn powers, abilities, or knowlege from different fiction for a set amount of time before it moves on to another fiction.

In my opinion the concept sounds neat however the author usually leaves the fiction gained up to chance which usually leads to the plot feeling secondary to the character earning powerups after rolling a significantly stronger setting than whatever they are in. Then they become too overpowered to be challanged without it feeling forced afterwords.

i'm pretty sure those are three different fandoms?

Xanxia/cultivation/wuxia
Unless you want to make a 'chinese' or 'eastern' fantasy tag those are different:
In short: Wuxia is low fantasy while Xanxia is high fantasy. One will see the protag cut a rock in two with their sword as impressive, the other cuts mountains, if not entire planets, in 108 pieces for breakfast.

The basic concept is: after X, the protagonist gets Y.
With X usually being the fic gaining some amount of words, but can also be the protagonist achieving some kind of feats.
And Y is usually a roll on a list of powers/items/whatever. Most Celestial X limits the type of powers around a concept: Celestial Forge would only give crafting powers, while Celestial Grimoire will only give magic or spells type of powers, and celestial menagerie will give you pets.

In short, IMO, is it a gacha story subtype with specific rules.

Yeah. I think ZZZ is Zenless Zone Zero, FGO is Fate Grand Order, and HSR is… something. Not sure about the last one. I just copied it into the lead list from a post earlier in the thread, which is why they're bunched.

Same with these. I do know the differences, being a pretty avid consumer of both when I was younger, they're just bunched because of a copy and paste.

Will separate them out so that's less confusing.

This explains a lot.

It seems like most of those tags are things I'd want to link to 'celestial' once I get parent/child tag capability, but they're distinct enough that they aren't straight synonyms. The 'adjacent/inspired' can be merged/linked, though, and probably the 'forge' and 'scrolls' variations too.

A heads up that some of those are unrelated:
"celestial being" is a 00 Gundam organization, and the tag is used as such.
"lifeasacelestialbody" appears to be descriptive

not sure about the others

Yeah, this could become a pain in the ass, because on top of the above, and afaik, celestial dragons is part of One Piece fandom, celestial bureaucracy is part of eastern fantasy.

FGO should not be grouped with ZZZ and HSR; those are both owned by the same company, and if Hoyoverse is a tag, those two are part of it along with Genshin Impact and Honkai 3rd Impact.
None of those will be linked. The list is just leads for groups of tags to look into, not a batch of merger/synonym suggestions. Will add Genshin Impact to the list though.

DxD is a massive fandom thats missing here. There's also ASOIAF/Game of Thrones, Warhammer fantasy, LOTR, Skyrim/Elder Scrolls, PJO, Danmachi

Still, this batch does cover a lot of the most popular fandoms, so a good start.
I would be careful with this since this can mean either kancolle or azur lane so focusing on those two tags might be better. While 'shipgirl' is more a genre than a fandom.

Merging tags for original works would also be a great addition.

Already did those two in the first batch.

Did this in the second.
Warhammer fantasy, LOTR, Skyrim/Elder Scrolls, PJO, Danmachi
kancolle or azur lane
Added all these to the list.

Might have missed a few, because some of the tags still show very different number of results when filtering using them. (i.e. dxd vs highschool dxd or game of thrones vs a song of ice and fire.)
Possibly someone has recreated 'dxd'/'highschool dxd' since I merged them both into 'high school dxd', will check in a sec, but once I make them into hard-synonyms it'll automatically convert those recreations in the future.

Edit: They had, so made into hard-synonyms. Did see a few 'elements of' and 'au' variations that could be linked, and there are those spinoffs which I haven't even looked at, so adding DxD to the list anyway.

'game of thrones' and 'a song of ice and fire' were kept separate as a book vs movie thing.
