So if I'm understanding you correctly, you are reading Japanese characters/names as they would be pronounced/read in Chinese?

Yep. Using the chinese readings of characters to spell out the sounds of common/not unheard of Japanese names. It's not unheard of to use the chinese readings of characters in Japanese speech and naming in the first place.
