Questionable Questing

Hmm just read it. This is really becoming a thing huh.

Get killed and reincarnated in a fantasy world stories.

It's pretty much a thing. It's also a genre in Chinese and Korean, whether Web Novel or Web Toon.

Though, die and get better life on a new world seems like a bitter escapism for me, philosophy-wise. The curbstomps get boring after a while.

On the other hand, I do like the kind of stories of uplifting new worlds or the like.

Oh, to note, Kumo desu ga will get to curbstomp level, but there are pretty long chapters to reach that part, and she does struggle hard to reach that level.

And I kinda lost interest once she reached that part.
+looks at further chapters of translated LN still unread+

Her fights at that point are rather cosmic-levels and more of a powerplay thing.

Much like RE:Monster started off with a good premise but kinda ruined it by being just one long running curbstomp escapist fantasy.

Only one which is curbstompy that i don't mind are Blue Slime and Overlord... mostly cause they manage to build interesting story and worlds outside of the main character. And in Slime's case it lampshades his 'ultimate power' pretty hard with an amusing character.

Power plays and such can be interesting if it's shifted from a Power game to a Political game where while she has overwhelming power, she can use it to solve all of her problems.

If it does that transition well enough then I can see it remaining pretty good.

Slime's case is interesting in that he is more interested in uplifting and sharing magitech development. That Dungeon of his is fucking hilarious.

Overlord's interesting new world and setting is rather overshadowed by the forced interplay between Momonga and the Guardians...

Oh, I have to note, despite Kumo later being as dark as Re:Monster in terms of eating sapients, the journey there is pretty well described and quite well written, even if it was literally written like a teen girl's blog sometimes. :D
Xicree

RE:Monster's darkness was fine by me... I just wish it wasn't so wishy washy on it. The huge amount of swing back and forth between 'I kill and eat these guys... but no no these other guys I dont kill and eat for any sensible reason beyond the author thinks they're pretty and wants to have them for sexing up' is pretty much the biggest annoyance for me.

Kumo at least starts on the premise that she's a scared teengirl who's doing what she can to survive. So long as her personality remains stable fine with her.

Is why I like Blue Slime so much.

Well, there's a plot twist later on that pretty threatens the stability of her character, but even after that, she pretty much remains the same.

Also, that plot twist was pretty great. A special deconstruction for this particular genre. :D

Note I'm not opposed to a character changing via events in the story... I'm against arbitrary changes which have no good explanation in story... like RE:Monster seems to grab.
