...And there's another thought. A magical girl series where 'He who fights demons must take care, lest he himself become one.' is a major rule...in a different way than in PMMM. Monsters can be killed simply enough, just stop their life processes, but demons...they just go back to hell. And need only a matter of minutes to be ready to leave again.

That's one of the traditional reasons for 'sealing' as an anti-demon tactic.

Fundamentally, there are two ways to 'kill' a demon - dilute it by placing it into a pure being's soul (often the magical girl's own, because it can grow stronger and thus in theory drown out many demons) and hoping the soul is strong and clean enough to hold out.

Or envelop it with a greater mass of darkness and curses, such that it loses it's identity in the midst of all of it. This is often counterproductive unless you have a way to split it into pieces...or are another demon or corrupt being, eating it.

Sealing is a temporary solution - what you have to do is lock them in the transitional state between hell and earth, and that's...fragile, even if the focus for the seal is undisturbed.

And even if a magical girl doesn't lock away demons herself, fighting them /does/ cause a gradual accumulation of darkness. It's important to strengthen your soul, reinforce your sense of morality, and keep up your self esteem, or you'll eventually be tainted through and through.

The conceit here is that neither killing or sealing is anything more than a stopgap measure, and that, whether you're good or evil...absorbing the demon into yourself or another is the only way to keep it gone longer than 'until 5pm/sunday'
