Questionable Questing

...man, this 'parodying shitty stuff' is harder than I thought it was.

Okay, making of "i'm trapped in a VR"?

The thing coming into my mind is King from Onepunchman having that happen to him and he keeps his crazy skill at gaming, but that's more of a stomp thing and would probably be a brief stint of "and then the death game gets wrecked".
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
Another would be someone getting stuck in a game...but ONLY that one guy. Everyone else thinks he's a crazy RPer.

And he doesn't know how to get out of his situation. Then there might be some lulziness on how exactly the game mechanics translate to him. Does he feel pain? Does he still revive? HOw about the senses of the body? Hunger?
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
At this point though I'm just throwing out ideas and trying to see what sticks. Making a relatively solid world is easy enough. Not so much...parodying.

Oh, you mean like having someone somehow become living in a game world like where NPCs are all real people, but players still see him acting like a terrible RPer, though his actions somehow affect the game's events and story? I suppose that could make an interesting story, cc.

The idea that King gets inside a video is funny, because you can go two ways with this. One is that he becomes the Saitama of this new world, and two is that he suddenly becomes the universe's spittoon because he's just as weak here. Do you think we could make the setting where it makes fun of the idea of multiple people being trapped in VR rather than one person though? Both routes are viable, of course!
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
For the first post, yes, more or less that. Though exactly how much he affects, how he is treated, etc. is up for debate. I don't even have a plot ready because I don't know what kind of world to make exactly.
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
For King, I believe it works best if he's more...super duper bullshit skilled to a level that seems to be animu bullshit. Because that IS what he is in canon. Remember the infinite combo that he did to Saitama? He's bullshit in games. The question is how to use him to make fun of typical VRMMO tropes.

Multiple people being trapped (that is, the entire playerbase) is going to require either every player being total spazzes or weirdos who react in unusual ways, or a large number of normal reactors and a cast of guys who react in hilarious or unusual ways. The straight men are the majority and they are probably gonna freak out. THe cast are the weirdos who treat it differently.

Well, I think we can set the tone quite well if we can find something similar to how, in Konosuba, in the beginning the MC dies thinking he saved a girl from a truck (anime trope) but actually died from a panic attack having been NEET for too long. All these "trapped in VR" all seem very serious. Maybe something silly to start and then pick it up from there?

King does have the sort of character that is edgy edgelord, but I think we want to at least start with a protagonist that is similar to the lead of a YA novel, I think? This would be most receptive, right?
d.fish
d.fish
One of the things I thought might work was to parody the wardrobe in Narnia, similar to having a kid get stuffed in a locker due to being bullied trope. I thought one big problem would be that it blurs what's "fantasy" and what's "scifi", because there's already plenty of things parodying fantasy and less so a comedic scifi series.
d.fish
d.fish
Just a thought that occurred to me just now, we could also mishmash the two--have a kid who's in school in VR get tossed into a locker in VR by online bullies somehow? It sounds contrived and silly, but maybe if it was less contrived, it would work... hm?
d.fish
d.fish
oh, I guess if we're making it a parody-like... we could make the MC have a personality similar to morty in rick and morty, and try to have the deep side of the story be about crazy adventures in cyber space and interpersonalrelationships or something hm... that sort of personality seems to fit as one of the types of humor triggering MC that we could use, right?
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
Yeah, if you're doing a parody, starting silly is the best idea. Not exactly sure how to best make fun of it though. Sockpooping shenanigans is more disgusting than funny. Maybe he didn't hear the warning signs for a disaster and got hit by a hurricane?
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
For the character/protagonist, either works. Either an edgelord who takes things too far, or someone who is quite different from the typical YA protag to make him stand out as a breath of fresh air.

As for the mishmash...I dunno. Bullying like that in VR, I don't quite get it. Do you mean a school play VR, how does that work?
d.fish
d.fish
Maybe it's a VRMMO about a protagonist female who plays a male character to avoid getting hit on but in return gets hit on by female players, as a way to make fun of the harem protag trope?
d.fish
d.fish
Wait, there's already a comic that's kind of like that already, despite being horribly made, and old and... hrm. Might need a new twist, but that is an alternative that people can understand easily, right?
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
The one about the mixed gender thing with IRL and VR sounds fun, yeah. If you can write the shenanigans well along with her building frustration because she's not actually into girls, that would be lulzy.

But yeah, that seems like a simple alternative. Though her adventures...I wonder how to take that.
CrossyCross
CrossyCross
She'll NEED something beyond "girl who is a harem protag but isn't actually into them at all". ANd is it one who got sucked into the game along with a lot of people, or just herself?

Then there's considering what kind of adventures she'll have, or what the point of her existence is. Death-game like SAO, have to finish the game? Does eh not even know why she's in the game like for realz?
d.fish
d.fish
Well, what ideas do you have for the plot beyond that? I think the whole deathgame thing like SAO is stupid, but the most we can parody about that is a throwaway oneliner, like "oh, but the microwave to the brain was taken out of the production model, so it doesn't work" so only a retard would leave it on... but then someone would just take it off them IRL
