As it turns out, most story elements are a reflection of reality rather than blatant plagiarism (there's that too though), I mean, you know those "secret realms" in xianxia and urban pokemon stories, where people explore pocket dimensions or w/e? So there's a form of entertainment in China called "secret room escape" that teens play, and you can kind of guess from there
I recently read a very basic Pokemon-in-Real-World type story, 精灵：我能看见系统提示, and I found that it didn't make me hate how "Chinese" it was. I encountered a Chinese web novel, where the protagonist says the words "hug your thighs" and some characters in other worlds didn't understand the meaning of this Chinese idiom. I am surprised and awed by the thought that went into this shitty story!
For all that Chinese web novels are shitty shitty trash garbage writing, I kind of hate the commenters who complain about the "Chineseness" of xianxia stories more, like sis, come on, this is a Chinese writer writing a Chinese genre based on Chinese folk culture, and you hate this, it's like wanting to see American stuff and hating fat people
