Their kind of greek and roman? Their really modern architects getting inspired by ancient stuff and redesigning in with some of their own ideas added on to it. So its a weird mishmash of ideas and concepts. One of the big things with modern design is that's its a lot more open and has a lot more natural light since heating's not as much of issue with air conditioning.

With some of the earlier architecture all the bedrooms on a second story house were designed to be right above the kitchen a lot of times, since the kitchen was usually the warmest part of the house and heat rises.

Leaving it that empty would be boring, but as a starting concept it doesn't have a lot except mysterious scifi space magic object

Maybe they started out empty, but as people channeled and used them, they put their hopes, dreams, and emotions into it, until slowly over time the crystals developed a personality and goals based on that. Make it a big of a mystery how much of the crystals developed feelings of their own or just copied their worshipers.

I'm thinking its kind of like the force, in that it gives them hints, advice, and generally tries to point them in the right direction, but is very rarely able to directly communicate with them.
