It was trying to be something it wasn't. RWBY worked best when it was cute girls doing cute things and occasionally getting into big fights with nonsensical weapons. The fanus arc, and the writers feeling the need to be seen as impactful and smelling their farts too much doomed all of that.

The issue with any smut with RWBY is that the characters are the good part about it not the world building. So most of the smut centered around it could have the grim and aura's taken out entirely and it wouldn't change the plot. Unlike Hazbin hotel, were taking out the setting and the world building fundamentally changes any fic based on it.
