Strange monsters visit people and give them superpowers, you have shapeshifting as your power and must discover the origins of these monsters and why they are giving people powers and how the people with powers are considered their children. loads of cosmic horror shit is hinted at and it is a fucking awesome setting once you get into the details

I'm not sure. I think it depends on the tone. if you want something darker, then you make the powers more grounded and weaker so the characters feel more threatened and that means less fantastical elements. While if its lighter its the opposite.

So on the sliding scale of cynisism what do you think works best for you.
Super best friends- where the good guys always win and the villians are either campy or sympathetic.
Main Line DC animated movies- Good guys win, but not without sometimes facing hardships or set backs

Watchmen- Things are shitty and sad, making those few moments of light beautiful
The Boys- The author hates superheros and makes sure you know it
Worm- Everything sucks and the universe will twist itself to be miserable

Epic dark fantasy still keeps the themes of weaker heroes fighting against something unimaginable. To me its more about power level and tone and those are the two most important things you need to get right for super heroes to work.

Nice. I agree, still enough room to do some pretty horrific villains while allowing the heroes to be real heroes.

Indeed, allow for real danger while having heroic forces. you want any aura like stuff or? Or you could just use Worm as it is a established brand and that will attract readers. Where as using a original setting is if you would find that fun

Honestly one of the biggest flaws with this site and a lot of others is that any original stuff isn't going to be as popular as something from a pre-existing property. It makes me tempted just to mess with Worm or Rwby enough till I get the settting I want.

Honestly, speaking of an original setting. I've always wanted to do a for lack of better words Gravity Fall or It styled coming of age story. A family dealing with some kind of loss or big event moves to a small isolated town from the big city. The kids don't like it and in the proccess of dealing with the move reveal their character flaws and setting their arcs moving forward.

They explore around this town, start to uncover some a sort of paranormal activity going on and from a club of misfits within the two to explore it and figure it out. They slowly start to peel back the mystery, accidentally awakening some ancient evil and their own hidden powers and have to work together to stop it.

Very similar to the spiderwick idea, but instead of being isolated to one family and one central location, this one centers around a whole town, seeing their reaction to spooky stuff, and how the kids deal with all of that. It gives you more characters to play with and a much bigger area to explore so it makes the conflict feel much bigger.
