His dad was already a pretty harden criminal and Tai was just starting to go down that path when he met Ozpin who offered him a way out and towards a better life. And that's why Tai is so pissed, this new life, this second chance that was supposed to be his way to do good instead of the evil he was born into?

It was a story Ozpin sold him so he could have a powerful warrior underneath his thumb. And now Tai is dedicated to the idea of freedom no matter what or how destructive it is.

I would say Tai tried really hard to reign in Yang's emotions, ironically using many of the same lesson he learned from Ozpin. Knowing full well his daughter impulsiveness and how her semblance worked was going to get her really hurt one of these days.
