Well I'm pretty sure I mentioned this awhile back, but in the beginning Alex triggers after Carol and Amy get into a pretty nasty fight, caused by the realization that no matter how hard he tries is family is tearing itself apart. He unknowingly, especially since he's pretty young like twelve or fourteen when he triggers, immediately starts using his powers on his family.

At first everyone thinks Alex is a trump that can give people a boost to their powers and a new fancy costume along with it. He gets tested by the PRT and while they are incredibly interested in his powers, a combination of realizing it wore off after awhile and Alex refusing to work with anyone other than their family caused them to back off.

So he wants to empower his family to destroy their enemies and like Sauron's Ring of Power, a Master Suit for Alex? Going from sidelines to direct combat with a patriarch of the household's power suit? A symbol of his new identity as cape name Imperium?

But what the PRT didn't realize was that Alex's power was kind of like a beer. You take one or two drinks, it'll have no effect. You take a couple drinks a day, well then suddenly you've got a problem and the effects start to become more permanent. But it takes awhile for Alex to realize that. He's still super happy, because his powers suddenly make everything better.

For Alex's powers it's the repetition of it that's key. Its like a drug. The more you take it, the more your body needs it, the more changes occur. But Ne Wave suddenly starts becoming active again, the whole family get's involved. Their powerful. Their happy. Carol starts to chill out. Amy's less grumpy. Vicky's less careless. Mark starts taking his meds. Alex has never been happier.

But Mark is going to die? And make it a real tragedy. He's getting closer to his son, bonding with Amy and Vicky, Carol smiles and laughs more. Make it seem like a new hope. Then fucking crush him and make the cause being Alex didn't use his power nearly enough

And thoughts on Alex having his own suit?

Then one night Mark tries to kiss him. Mark having severe depression made him especially vulnerable to the dopamine effect of Alex's powers and that's when Alex kind of realizes that little side effect of his powers being addicting. So he stops cold turkey immediately, using the excuse of either going to some kind of school function or camp for a week to get out of the house.

And in that week of him being gone, he gets a phone call from a hysteric Amy that something happened to dad while he was gone. Thus setting the stage. Alex blames himself hard for what happened, and after his family starts disintegrating even worse after Mark's death, resigns himself to constantly use his powers on his family.

Mark's dead. He killed himself because Alex rejected him.
