And with Anime or Comic con's, I don't think that's a good idea. While nerd culture has opened up in recent years, it's still predominantly male and you'll be competing with a bunch of other dudes for all the halfway decent looking chick's there. Plus, while I'm sure there's plenty of girls there to nerd out, there's also a lot of girl's there that you should stay far away from.

Your best bet is to go local. Find some events or stuff going on that's under the radar. For better or worse Nerd culture's worth a lot of money, it's been corporatized and when that happens there's a lot of people who want to take advantage of it. Stuff like comic con especially. Lots of rough stuff going on.
