Sparta's an old civilization though. Not going to say they weren't the assholes of the Greek world, which is really saying something considering all the shit Athens did, but Sparta went through different periods. Some periods were more open to the idea of trading and negotiating, some periods were more obsessed with being the strongest warriors at the detriment of their humanity.

They kind of waxed and waned in different directions, depending on how much land and slaves they own and how international their leaders were at the time. One of the big reasons they were so obsessed with being the best soldiers is because most of their population was slaves and they were terrified of an uprising because of it.

It's why during their most famous battle they only had 300, more like several thousand propaganda's a bitch, people fighting in it. Because if they lost anymore then they would be dealing with some serious domestic issues back home.

Yeah that was pretty bad, not only was it to terrify their slaves into compliance but it was also a way to blood new soldiers and help inspire the us versus them attitude they needed to justify their brutal methods of teaching. It was kind of a never ending cycle of teachers abusing students, Spartan's abusing outsiders who in turn abuse them, further justifying their ideas.

A mixture of climate change and war is the general theory. Basically Mexico's a giant desert, and it had several very wet years which caused the population to swell far past the amount it could actually support which caused famine and war as everyone duked it out over the remaining water and arable land, in turn causing the callousness and brutality that came later.

But people are still debating about it. The all out wars and then genocides, lack of books or any printed media, then the Spanish Conquests and subsequent destroying of native culture means that most of the archeological evidence is pretty spotty at best.

The politics of it all doesn't help either. A lot of people have been trying to whitewash the Aztecs in recent years because they don't want to glorify the Spanish, but there's a reason every single subject underneath the Aztecs literally jumped at the chance to rebel and allied the Spanish literally weeks after they showed up.

Especially not in the iron age, when you lack complicated banking, communications networks, or mass infrastructure to enforce your rule. Because without all that it quickly becomes which local strong man has the biggest army and who are they loyal to. Something made worse since South America at this time didn't have horses or any pack animals.

I've been working on it, and have a decent chunk of Mina and Ochako's section done. And am starting to work out how the Hero Commission story line's going to work.
