Questionable Questing

Except Mark's not normal. He's been trained by Batman. He's on a first name basis with Redhood, Nightwing and Batman all at the same time. Somehow able to navigate that black hole of family drama with ease. He's friends with Wally and Roy Harper. He already has a burgunning underground superhero career. He's getting invited to potentially go on missions from the Justice League.

Except foreshadowing Mark likes fighting practice and training more then any of his sisters. To a degree that in retrospect later is inhuman

He has so much going for him, but everytime he sees his father he's reminded of how small he is. So he really aggressively tries to be normal. Get involved in all the clubs at school, have good grades, be popular and well liked. Basically be the best civilian as he, at least in his own mind, waits for his powers to kick in and for his true superhero career to begin.

Which like you said, with being inhuman, doing all of this, being so involved in so many things and being pretty much good at everything. it's not normal. If he didn't have his Viltrum mentality he would've snapped from the pressure years ago. Except instead the pressure is good. This constant high level of stress helps repress his more violent urges. Having a clear goal to pursue keeps him zeroed in.

But as his power finally kicks in, he finally starts to let loose. He stops caring so much about being seen as perfect or having complete control. He can finally just cut back and be himself instead of the image he built up in his mind of who he had to be and that's when the problems start.

But yeah, the boy scout analogy, that's exactly what I'm going for. I want to do a bit of a bait and switch with the readers. Everyone's coming in expecting to see Nolan as the big bad and wondering how he'll beat Superman, that their not paying attention to Mark especially since he's such a good boy and such a mommas boy.

Momma's boy, that's the last key to the puzzle. He tries to be the best possible son he can be for her, not just due to his image problems but also because he genuinely loves her and he has some repressed feelings involved with her. So he's perfect for her. He's kind, he listens. He does his chores, tells her about his day, and jokes around with her.

Except he tries just a little too hard. He's a little to agree with everything she says. He's a little too angry at her suggestions to date someone or get out of the house more. He's a little touchy feely. He's a little too close. Just little subtle things that over time, along with his perfect school boy image starting to crack, to show what's really going on here.

Yeah, I have this really interesting scene in mind towards the beginning with his gay friend from school, texting him late at night about everything going on and being a little surprised that he replied to him this late at night. To which Mark replies that he was busy studying for the test. And the friend laughs and says something about how the test isn't that important, why's he wasting his time.

And then Mark with an ominous tone, says he does this for every test. That he doesn't need to sleep and hasn't for the last eight years, and that every night he spends this time making sure his grades, his clothes, his relationships, everything is perfect.

So Mark isn't threatening Willam but he is dead serious about the importance of his routine and reputation

The creepy part isn't that Mark is threatening him, its that he sees nothing wrong with not sleep or spending a significant amount of his time to be seen as perfect.

it ties in with the next part, where Mark runs into a teacher that just doesn't like him because the teacher wants to be in charge all the time and see him as a threat. And instead of talking to his parents, shutting up and ignoring him, or even transferring to a different class, Mark doubles down and makes it into almost a game to screw with this teacher as much as possible while maintaining their grades.

Ah so he's being normal to what he thinks because he's surrounded by Supers and the Chi using bat family without knowing he himself is exceptional

And when the teacher threatens to fail him for an important test, Mark cuts the break lines to the teachers car and thinks of it as a funny pranks rather than anything more.

It's not just the chi or training that makes him this way, Mark just has these naturally predatory instincts that he thinks are perfectly normal and doesn't understand why everyone else thinks its weird.
