Men did the heavy labor like plowing or construction, but woman took care of the house which meant handling the garden, livestock, cleaning, and manufactures goods like butter or soap. So very useful and just as labor intensive.

So what all that means is that common men and women where pretty equal in responsibility and power over the household, lots of times your married locally so if you mistreated your spouse you would have to answer to his or her family, and really there was a lot of freedom to pick and choose your partner at this level since everyone was relatively equal.
