As he gets closer to people we see he's naturally longing for kindness and can try to save others. He also if asked by a friend will kill virtually anyone he considers a threat through devious schemes

And he's only one of our protags.

But on the surface and before the character development, he's distrustful and greedy. Nice, thief with a heart of gold is a classic trope for a reason. How does Contessa, excuse me Fortuna lol, work? Is it like a gut feeling he gets sometimes? Weird dreams and precognition? Or is it a voice directly talking and giving vague hints or goals?

He can pull on fate to give good luck at the price of bad luck backlash. The luck hurts worse if his good luck harms someone directly

Luck powers are always fun to watch if done correctly and aren't too over powered.
