He also if asked by a friend will kill virtually anyone he considers a threat through devious schemes

But on the surface and before the character development, he's distrustful and greedy. Nice, thief with a heart of gold is a classic trope for a reason. How does Contessa, excuse me Fortuna lol, work? Is it like a gut feeling he gets sometimes? Weird dreams and precognition? Or is it a voice directly talking and giving vague hints or goals?
