How do you gain the attention of ancient heroic lineage/spirits? Do you complete some kind of trial or personality test? Make some kind of contract to complete some kind of goal or fuse your essences together? Or is it a blood line thing?

You seek them out in their temples and altars or are lucky enough to be found by their wandering spirits and get bestowed their teachings of mythical martial arts. Trials are involved to unlock higher stages of mastery.

Just remembered! Cultivation levels! Do you have something like that? Where the closer and more trials you go through the more of your ancestors power you can pull from? Or is the ancestor just a teacher and is showing the disciple how to manipulate the magic, cultivation, chakra or whatever you call it?

I don't do cultivation a lot. Read some like Forge of Destiny but not a fan of all these ranks. The Immortal Remnant infuses aura and the teachings are the aura. The Talent and power.
