He's a guy born out of his era basically, with the average liberal beliefs you would find today clashing against a much more brutal time. I didn't even think of that angle, I was thinking more mutual corruption on both sides, but yeah that makes a lot of sense. Which also ties in with how over time Charlie starts to see sexuality as a tool to control and ensnare her lovers.
