I'd advise saving the profile pic, just in case it reverts at some point, for some reason. Then you can just make it yours again.

The 'common' way of doing so is most likely to be something along the lines of the following:

Find the picture you wish to keep, of the desired size if you can manage that (otherwise editing and saving a shrunk version might be needed) and then right click on it. For this walkthrough, the picture in the quoted post here will do:

Once you have found the desired image and right clicked on it, choose the 'save as' option. You can also choose 'open in new tab', go to the new tab and then right click -> 'save as' what might be a 'full size' image of a 'shrunk' picture.

Choose where you want to save the image to, but remember where you put it. Click your username next to the alerts in the top right of the site, then click on 'account details' from the drop down list.

On the 'account details' page, click on the 'avatar image' where it tells you to click to change. Click on 'upload file' of the options and find the location you saved the desired image to. Select said image, click 'open' and then 'okay'. Congratulations, you've now got a new permanent avatar'

Yes, I have been straightforward with these instructions, I hope they help. Not what you meant? I'm sorry about that, but I'm not sure what it has to do with... Huh. Well, how you'd usually save it doesn't seem to work, assumedly because it's the default no-avatar pic, rather than one you've selected.
