Magic, the light of the soul. Once thought to be superstition, it is now part of the reality we live in.

The year 2XXX heralded the arrival of the [Unknowns], an extra-dimensional threat that seeks to devour everything. The world was caught unprepared. Conventional weapons is mostly ineffective.

Countries were forced to nuke their own territories just to deny the advance of the [Unknowns]. It worked, but it rendered most of the world uninhabitable.

Yet along with this tragedy came a blessing, the Awakening as it was called.

Witches, females who were able to freely manipulate Mana, and Mages, males who have an innate reservoir of Mana. Witches have no magic in their bodies, diminishing their uses. Mages cannot control their Mana, rendering them useless.

But a ritual was discovered, linking the Mage and Witch. This ritual enables the Witch to siphon Mana from their partner to manifest [Exceed Armaments] or [X-Arms], weapons born form their souls, while it enables the Mages to control their own Mana to a degree.

Thus the Gemini System came forth, ushering the retaliation of Humanity.

The [Unknowns] were pushed back and the people were no longer living under the threat of extinction.

Humanity begins to rebuild, stronger than ever. Yet the danger has not passed. Once in a while, a portal would open up in random places. If these portals were not cleared and destroyed, it would begin to spill out the [Unknowns] that inhabit inside it. These portals were called [Zones].

And so the [Gemini Agency] was made to counter the thread of these [Zones]. In response to the escalating appearance of these [Zones], the [Artificial Armaments] or [A-Arms] were made, augmenting the battle strength of the Mages.

Prologue

Creatures made up of pulsating flesh and chitin rushed through the ruined city streets. The guttural cries that comes out from their fanged maws were deafening as thousands similar cries joins the monstrous orchestra. Their claw tipped limbs smashes against the ruined pavement as they move across alleys and streets. They were all moving to the same direction, as if something was guiding them somewhere.

A few block away, two people were fighting off these creatures. At first glance, it seems hopeless. Two young people, a man and a woman, against a horde of ravenous monsters.

But if you looked closer, the opposite is what's happening.

The male, blowing off large chunks of the creatures with a single punch or kick. With each strike, a monster falls. With each step, ten more follows. In a single breath, more that a dozen blows fly out, showering the immediate surroundings with a rain of unknown flesh and bone.

The Spear-maiden beside him was faring no worst. With each swing of her spear, a large gout of flame erupts, incinerating all within a few feet. With a thrust of her spear, streams of flame rush forth, obliterating any creatures it touches. The tongues of flame burns every creature it touches, filling the air with the smell of burnt meat.

"Haah!" The man grunted out as he threw a stronger punch on a scaled beast that is twice as large as a bus. "You know -hyah!- this isn't what I'm -hah!- expecting for a first -hiyah!- [Zone] Dive this week!"

"I know!" The girl beside him screams in delight. "Isn't it fun?!'

"Its troublesome and extremely dangerous!" The man yelled back. "Of course it's fun!"

The fight- no, the culling continued on. The horde of monsters seems endless. For every beast to fall, three more takes its place.

But the pair continued fighting, seemingly unable to run out of energy. No matter how many they fight, no matter how long it has been since the battle has begun, they show no signs of fatigue.

Before long, the victor has been decided.

The ground was filled with carcasses and charred flesh. Below it was a lake of purple blood. The smell of burnt flesh mixed with the coppery tang of blood and the putrid smell of rot pervaded the very air itself.

Heedless of this, the pair calmly walks over the river of corpses.

"You said it was a D-Ranked [Zone]. With the amount and strength of the [Unknowns], it was clearly over B-rank." The male complained.

"I... might've forgotten that the rank was bumped up a few days ago." The female scratched the back of her head. "Hehehe~"

The male just sighed. "It so... you. Never mind, how much do you think would all of this get us?"

"Umm... If you minus the commission, then..." The female mumbles of for a few moments and then, "About 200 thousand Credits!"

"Oh? Then that means I can buy a new [A-Arms]! My gloves broke a while ago." The male said.

"Subtract the cost for that and then we'll split the remainder." Said the female.

"You sure about that, Tori?" The male asks.

"Yeah. 'Don't need much Creds anyway." The girl, Tori replied.

"If you're sure." Said the male. "Anyways, let's clear this place first."

"Sure thing!" With those words, a pillar of flame bloomed underneath Tori as it propelled her up into the red sky. "I see a small group two blocks northeast and another one west!"

"You take care of the one in the west, I'll take care of the other one!" The male said as he vanished, leaving only a small crater on where he once stood.

"Wheee~" Tori, on the other hand, blast off like a demented rocket, laughing merrily along the way.

And so marks another day in the life of the [Pair].

A/N: So I finally gave in to my roommate's nagging and wrote something coherent. This is my first story so please be merciful. Do note that English is not my first Language so if you see any mistakes or errors, feel free to correct it.
I'm posting this as I finish writing so I have no stockpile of chapters. It may also cause confusion and lots of errors so once again, please be merciful.
Updates are irregular depending if I have the time to write.
Also, if you have any suggestions for the title, I'd really appreciate it.

Chapter 1
Chapter 1

When I came to, I was standing in an ordinary family home.

But the world I was in wasn't my world, and I wasn't 'me.' Though one might think I was being philosophical, I really wasn't. It was just the best way to describe the situation I was in.

I had been inserted into another world.

Memories of another life and another time flowed within my mind, yet it seems muted as if I was viewing it from a movie.

his crazy body possession(?) or transmigration(?) was completely unreasonable. I had gone to bed just like any other day, but when I woke up, i found myself on the last day of the semester at Agent Military Academy.

At first, I had two suspicions.

First was that I was being pranked.

But that idea was shot down in just five seconds. I couldn't even be bothered to explain why.

Second was that I was dreaming.

But I naturally came to dismiss the idea. As everyone knew, the thought of being in a dream never occurred to dreaming people, and more importantly, no dream continued for two weeks with such a clear sense of reality.

As a result, I spent the past two weeks pondering on what to do in this new reality of mine.

Just like I've been doing in the last two weeks, I was lying in bed and staring blankly at the ceiling when my smartphone alarm began to ring.

Glancing over, I saw that it was a mail. Taking the smartphone in my hands, I opened the mail and read it.

'Congratulations! Your application to [Gemini Agency] has been approved! Please proceed to any Agency branch for additional instructions.'

The me of this world sent over an application a month ago.

To be honest, he was nothing special. abysmal Mana pool, good ability, average physique, and no [Pair].
It was as if I was just another mob.

Yet when I arrived, I seemed to have manifested a new ability.

[Reset] - it automatically reverts my body and any object I am in contact with to the original state it was in every 5 seconds.

An ability that makes me a Pseudo-immortal. But it only does just that, it just resets my body. It does not null the pain of any injury I take. I tested it two days after I came to this world. By itself, its almost useless. But if you add in the ability of this world's me, it can be made into a useful ability.

[Enhancement] - permanently boosts anything I choose at the cost of my entire Mana Pool.

Due my low Mana, it was mostly useless because Mages who completely deplete their Mana falls into coma sleep, never to awaken again. However, my new ability takes care of that. For the past two weeks I have been boosting my Mana capacity and body nonstop. I don't know how strong I am now compared to the rest of the world.

After staring at the ceiling for a few hours, I came to a decision.

"Fuck it. I can just quit if I don't like it."

I stood up and then got ready. A few moments later and I was walking in an alley a few blocks away.

It was a shortcut the prev- no. It was a shortcut I frequently used. Despite it being a hotspot for crime, the locals know who not to mess with. And with me being a Mage, nobody bothers me as I walk across.

Another few minutes of walking and I found myself staring at a large building. The Agency, an international organization that is solely responsible for the clearing of [Zones].

"You new here?" Someone asked.

Glancing to my side, I saw a red haired female looking up at the massive building.

"Yeah. I was about to finish my application." I reply.

"A rookie huh," She said. "The name's Victoria, C-class Burst Witch."

She held out her hand to which I shook.

"Glad to meet you. I'm Elric, Unranked Buster Mage."

Blaze, Buster, and Burst, three broad classification of abilities. Burst is instantaneous effect ability, Buster is amplification ability, and Blaze is specialist ability.

After exchanging pleasantries, the both of us entered and was ushered by a staff towards a room.

"Thanks you for waiting, I am Anne, your agent." A black haired beauty in a suit said as she beckons us to sit on the sofa. "Now, let us dicuss about you two."

She turned towards me. "Sir Elric, as a newcomer, you are to be tested for your ability after this then we will arrange for you to choose your [Pair]."

Next, she turned towards my companion. "Miss Victoria, have you found a suitable [Pair]?"

"Now yet. Everyone feels kinda off, ya know." She replied. Then a smile bloomed on her face. "How 'bout I pair up with Elric?"

My eyes widened in surprise. Choosing a [Pair] is an act of trust. A Mage or Witch leaves their back to their [Pair].

"Are you sure about that?" Anne asks.

"Yeah. My intuition's telling me that he's a good match." Victoria says with a small grin.

Anne smiles and turns back to me. "As you have heard Miss Victoria, she wants to be your [Pair]."

I looked at the resigned Anne and the smiling Victoria. After thinking it over for a few moments, I reply.

"We can just break it off if it won't work, so sure."

"Really? Breaking off a [Pair] leaves a black mark on your records so it might be hard to find a new [Pair] after." Anne said.

"Yeah. I'm sure." I reply.

Victoria beamed, her joy was so evident in her face that I smiled as well.

"You won't regret it!" Victoria proclaims.

"Very well then. Everything seems to be in order, please follow me to your examination." Anne stood up and beckons me to follow her.

"Good luck, partner!" Victoria hollered as I follow Anne.

"Thanks," I grinned. "But I don't need luck."

As I exit the exam hall, I was immediately greeted with the exited face of my future partner.

"So, how'd it go? It's easy right? Didya get a high grade? What rank did ya get?" VIctoria shoots of questions after questions.

I couldn't help myself but smile at her exuberance. Her energy and enthusiasm is just like that of a puppy.

"Easy there, I can't answer everything at once." I held my hands up in surrender. "Anyways, it was not that hard, and look."

I hand out to her my Identity Plate. It was a silver card the size of my palm with writings engraved into it.

Name: Elric Blackmore
Age: 19
Classification: Mage (Buster)
Rank: C

"Hey! We're the same rank! And you're younger than me!" She said as she looked over my Plate.

"Is that so?" I grinned. "So should I call you Big Sis then?"

Her face turned stony and she stood stock still. Just as I was about to apologize, a dopey smile appeared on her face.

"Hehehe," She giggled.

I raised an eyebrow and looked at her straight in the eyes.

Her smile fell.

I kept looking at her.

The tips of her ears began turning red.

I kept looking at her.

She began to fidget.

I kept looking at her.

"Okay, stop it already!" She stomped out. "I wasn't having any weird thought, okay!"

"I didn't say anything." I smirked.

Just as Victoria was about to reply, Anne interrupted.

"If you're done flirting, please follow me so we can make your [Pairing] official." Anne says as she walked past us.

"W-w-we aren't flirtin'!" Victoria stammer out.

I just let out a small laugh as I follow the two.

A/N: And that's it for today. I don't have much time to write. Toodles~
