I've done it before, but for some reason am having a difficult time of it right now. I uploaded the image, got the link, clicked the "insert edit image" button, inserted the link, and hit post. However, all that comes up is the generic pic with the red x on it. Like this:

Am I doing it wrong?

You are posting a link to the page where the image is. It should end in JPG PNG GIF or some such.
 
Gonna have to stalk the mods for tips because we all know I'm not about to ask them myself. Why? No idea.
