• An addendum to Rule 3 regarding fan-translated works of things such as Web Novels has been made. Please see here for details.
  • We've issued a clarification on our policy on AI-generated work.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Is posting other people's stories from dead sites allowed?

I have access to a few old stories from people on ASSTR that I can't find anywhere else. They are only available through the wayback machine now. Would it be allowed for me to post these people's stories (with the authors' names clearly labeled) so that they can live on an active site, or would that violate the no plagiarism rule?

I wouldn't be spamming these stories, I would just post a handful.

If I recall correctly, last time something similar came up, the answer was "Only if you have the author's express permission."

But I could be misremembering. Not that…I mean, bluntly put, if you were going to re upload missing stories…AO3 would probably be a safer, more accessible, and more reasonable place to do it?

Alright, gotcha. I'm still waiting for my ao3 account to be approved though, lol

Ao3 Content Policy said:

II.D. Copyright Infringement

Reproductions of large excerpts of copyrighted works are not allowed without the consent of the copyright owner. This includes stories, artwork, songs, poems, transcripts, and other copyrighted material. Crediting the original creator does not give you the right to upload, podfic, or translate someone else's work without permission, regardless of whether the source is a fanwork or a professionally published work.
Seems like it would be forbidden under the Ao3 content policy. My understanding of the law is that while fanfic authors don't have rights to what they take from the original IP, anything beyond that including OCs, non-canon situations, and their choice of words is fully protected under copyright, which is why there are no rights issues with filing off the serial numbers and getting your fanfic published (see 50 Shades of Grey). As such posting their work without permission does count as a copyright infringement, and Ao3 is quite careful when it comes to legal shit.

if it is against their policy I haven't seen it really enforced. just the opposite; I've seen several stories originally on ASSTR posted there, some outright saying they're not the original author

Like any policy it can only be enforced so much as it is reported. Obviously there's no way for me to stop you and I couldn't be bothered to follow you to Ao3 anyways; I'm just letting you know what their rules are.

Ao3 Isn't actively moderated, they only do something if there's been a report and it's gone through a review process. Honestly while the part about not mass reporting something makes sense, the 'don't go looking for things to repot' bit seems like a pretty big tip off in regards to the leaderships feelings about content moderation.

Same as QQ, SB, and SV. The only times mods might take action without a user generated report is if they see it in the wild.

To my understanding Ao3 occasionally suffers from a userbase that is grateful Ao3 is around to shelter [my enlightened fetish] but is furious that [your disgusting fetish] is allowed. With the ao3 tagging system an individual like that can generate hundreds of reports an hour just from a few related tags, which wastes a shitload of mod time. I guess they just chucked that in there to provide a basis to mute accounts that constantly make spurious reports, because when it comes to non-copyright content moderation they really don't care.
