My very first quest, so please be patient with me.

This takes place in an Earth similar to Earth-3, but with many differences, particularly in the fact that the heroes are as successful in fighting the good fight as super-heroes typically are in this kind of scenario.

You will pick which hero you are. You can be:

[] the technological hero of Metropolis. With alien technology you discovered as a child, you rose from the slums and now enjoy the high life. You are determined to show that every human can be like you, and can rise from any circumstances to become the best that they can be. Of course, if you also inspire them to see you as a god, you see no reason not to let them indulge themselves in that falsehood, so long as they don't worsen their own lives doing so.

[] the wacky rapscallion of Gotham. You know you have probably gone a little cuckoo, but who wouldn't with this job? Plus, since your girlfriend is also your therapist, you're pretty sure you're not going to break your rules anytime soon. Until then, you can always use your "unique" fighting style and your gizmos to make the criminals of your city the butt of the joke. And a little face-paralyzing toxin, but its not like a smile ever killed anybody, right?

[] the immortal sorceress of ancient Greece. You fell in love with Odysseus, and he with you, but with a family back at his home, you two never did anything about it. After you're journey, you stayed on the Isle of Aeaea, where you could stay immortal so long as you never left its shores, helping those outside of it through magic. Thousands of years later, you had a vision of a coming apocalypse and left your island for the first time in a thousand years to avert it.

YOU HAVE SELECTED: LEX LUTHOR

"Mr. Olsen, I'd advise you to point the quantum dissembler away from the hostage."

Your warning goes unheeded by the red-haired super villain, as he keeps pointing the hastily constructed weapon towards the temple of the unconscious LexCorp intern clutched in an elongated arm.

"That's not my name!" Olsen shouts. "It hasn't BEEN my name since I fell into your goddamn vortex or whatever the fuck it was. I'm Quantum Man and you know it!"

You note the oddity in him apparently blaming you for his accident; you recall him happily volunteering for your former employee Potter in his experiments with alternate timelines. Either this is due to Quantum Man's episodes into madness - and really, even with his potential power, trying to threaten you in your own building? - or a result of his shifting with his alternate selves, especially since he just shifted from enhanced intelligence creating the weapon he now holds out of scraps around your office into this elastic form.

"Be that as it may," you say calmly, looking straight into Quantum Man's eyes, "The only reason my security team hasn't turned you into cat food the moment you entered the vicinity of this building is that I personally sympathize with you. You never asked to become tied in with your alternate selves, and I have been working on a cure for you ever since you first exchanged with that reptilian giant."

As you speak, you blink carefully in a precise manner, allowing the AI you created in childhood out of scraps from a rocket in Centennial Park to quietly activate the Quantum Foam Beacon you built under the floor of your office. All Braniac needs now is your approval, but you've always tried to believe in the best in people.

"The cure is in its final stages of completion," you continue, knowing that Quantum Man has no idea what has been activated right under his feet. "Drop the weapon, let this poor girl go, and I will not only cure you, but I will personally guarantee my full protection from the law in what you have done in your sickness."

A moment passes in silence. Olsen glances over your grey business suit, totally at odds with his own halfhazard attire that was probably cobbled together from dozens of dimensions. For one moment that makes your heart rise behind your stoic facade, he looks at you with an almost pleading expression. Then, it literally disappears, his face replaced with a lupine one, then one similar to the Jovians you once saved from Darkfather, then back to the freckled twentysomething year old, now with a psychotic half-grin.

"Mr. Luthor," he says mockingly to you, "whatever made you think I want to be cured?"

You allow yourself a heavy sigh through your nose. "Wishful thinking, I suppose," you reply morosely. Then you calmly snap your fingers.

Olsen immediately drops both his weapon and the girl, going into convulsions. The Quantum Foam Beacon underneath him attracts the Q-foam forming this universe directly on top of everyone to your room. While it does nothing to you or the intern -Rose, according to her name tag, you should remember that for when you prescribe her therapy- you are now checking to see if she has been harmed in any way, it manages to "block" Olsen's physical connection with his other selves while enhancing his connection with his mental selves for one brief moment- not enough to harm him too much, but enough to render him harmless.

A quick call to Mercy to take Olsen to the holding cells until the Special Crimes Unit arrives, as well as taking the groggy Rose to get looked over by the company nurse, and everything is in order. There is a reason they call you:
[]Superman
[]Ultraman
[]Write-in

"Well, Braniac," you say, "that was certainly an interesting way to start the day. Now, what shall we do next?"

Choose two:
[] Contact the police. While you trust Mercy to handle Olsen, Chief Mannheim will need to be informed of the cure you've concocted for Olsen. You could delegate the task, but it might be worth handling it on your own.

[] Check on files of your active villains. Olsen is putting you in a paranoid mood, and you feel the need to remind yourself about who is out of prison and a threat, as well as the general crime rate in Metropolis.

[] See how well LexCorp is doing. The Planet has been running a piece based on the "upcoming financial collapse of LexCorp" - typical Planet bullshit, but it does have you wondering how we're competing against Stagg Enterprises and Goldstar, Inc.

[] Contact your fellow heroes. Your role as the public backer of the Legion of Hope, as well as it's overall leader, gives you much responsibility. Jack might need a loan (again), and didn't Barbara mention something about a sorceress with a prophecy?

Brainiac begins by showing a graph of Lexcorp's stock prices compared to your chief competitors in Metropolis, Stagg Enterprises and Goldstar, Inc. In short, you're doing well, but competition is fierce. Stagg took a hit a few years ago when it's founder died, but after Sapphire Stagg managed to keep the vultures in Stagg's Board trying to take her inheritance from under her nose, the company has been improving, particularly when it comes to pharmaceuticals. Hardly surprising considering that more than half of the drugs in this city get in thanks to "missing cargo" and the like. Simon Stagg's business practices may have been highly out of date, but the former Mr. Millions would never have stepped to the lows his daughter is going to keep the company afloat. Although you do have to wonder how Transmuto and his clones first mutated...

Meanwhile, Goldstar is still licensing its "Future Forever" (God, that name will never stop being stupid) team of freelance security consultants - mercenaries, to the uninitiated. While Lexcorp has outfitted Metropolis's Special Crime Unit with the proper gear to defend citizens against the kind of criminal the city tends to attract, you've been reluctant at best with sharing your "special" technology with the world at large; thankfully, with the legions of lawyers you hired to explain the dozens of reasons of why this would be an idiotic idea to the House of Representatives to the point even C-SPAN seemed to get tired of it, no one of any importance has done anything worse than accuse you of being unpatriotic.

The downside of this is that this has led to Michael Carter (the CEO and namesake of Goldstar, Inc.) to market his own team of "heroes", led by himself and his sister to the highest bidder, who more often then not tends to be the military, desperate to get their hands on his technology short of actually confiscating it. The fact that it seems to be based on technology that shouldn't exist for another five centuries hasn't been lost on you, causing you to wonder whether Ted Kord is really the genius behind the Futurisuits (ugh!) as Carter claims...

This train of thought has got you thinking, as you are wont to do. Olsen's attack wasn't unexpected, but it did come surprisingly coordinated. Olsen was never stupid, despite some boneheaded decisions pre-transformation, but his level of sanity has always been uneven at the best of times. His latest claim of always being called "Quantum Man" was especially notable - when Olsen first transformed, he went by Kid Quantum; during his Suicide Squad days he went by Variant4 and of course there was that brief but embarrassing time when he somehow acquired a gun bigger than he was and went by Multi-Apex. You're not one to talk, given the various names you've been given no matter how many times you've told people to call you Lex (though you liked "Mr. Tomorrow" enough to greenlight a marketing campaign based on it), but Olsen is definitely showing signs of continuity. This could mean two things: he's channeling a version of himself that has been a much less erratic super-villain out of luck, or he's been getting aid at stabilizing from an outside source...

"Brainiac, get me a list of my enemies known to be alive, out of prison or the Suicide Squad, and unable to be handled by regular law enforcement," you say out loud. If it's simply a case of his powers, the countermeasures you gave to Mercy should hold him until the SCU arrive. If not... well, proper paranoia has kept you alive so far.

At the top of the list is, unsurprisingly, the Zatara family. With the amount of publicity they get as stage magicians, you know that few would believe that they actually control half of organized crime in Metropolis, and fewer still would believe that they are actual sorcerers. Since they are at least intelligent enough to keep away from the more deadly magical entities (though Barbara swears that she can smell nothing but brimstone whenever they're in the room), they've managed to avoid anything worse than skirmishes with anyone that could counter their spells, and unfortunately, since magic is more art than science, you've been unsuccessful at doing anything worse than containing their damage or defeating their henchmen. If they've been messing with Olsen, they may have finally bitten more than they can chew, and the rest of Metropolis may pay the price.

Scrolling through, you see that Dr. Magnus has been sighted near the city. That definitely does not bode well. After transferring his comatose wife's brain into the gynoid body he calls Antimony, he's been obsessed with doing that to the rest of humanity. You've managed to stop him whenever he tries anything big, but he's still managed to duplicate his experiment with others, creating Silver, Cobalt, Gallium, Osmium, and Nickel. Since is specialty is robotics, albeit to a degree it astounds even you, he seems unlikely to have anything to do with Olsen - but then again, Olsen has transformed into a robot at times.

Speaking of reality shakers, you come across someone you know would be all too interested in Olsen - the New God Darkfather, ruler of New Ragnarok. Considering his obsession with increasing his power, Darkfather or any one of his agents, from Doctor Impossible to Rigel could have infiltrated Earth in an attempt to attack Genesys. However, doing so could all too easily break his Pact with Lightseid, which would bring about a war neither side would want. On the other hand, considering that Darkfather was the power behind Project Cadmus...

You're musings are interrupted by a buzz on your desk. "Lex," Braniac intones, "you have a visitor."

"Tell them I'm busy," you mutter, distracted.

"It's your sister, Lex, I think she would be rather nonplussed."

Vote - Familial Relationships

[ ] You smile. While what you're working on is important, you could certainly take a chat with family to put you're mind at ease. You should really try to clear your schedule and get together with Lena, her husband, and your parents. And Nathalthia, assuming she's grown out of her teen rebellion phase.

[ ] You frown. You and Lena haven't talked in over a month, and you're not sure if that counted as a full conversation. Considering how busy you are at your respective jobs, its a wonder you could work that in and considering what you're jobs are, it's a bigger wonder that you didn't end up screaming at each other. Still, you should probably let her in, if only to prevent her from arresting you for "obstruction of justice."

[ ] You sigh. Lena will gladly force herself through the titanium shielding on your doors just to hide out from Mom and Dad. Of course, considering what their idea of parenting is, you can't exactly blaming her for constantly trying to live with you and do whatever it takes to escape ye olde Suicide Slum. Ah, the eternal optimism of youth.

After you talk to your sister, you need to follow up your investigation. Olsen is in no condition for interrogation, so you'll need to follow up on your enemies. You should investigate:

[ ] Stagg Enterprises
[ ] Goldstar, Inc
[ ] The Zatara's
[ ] Dr. Magnus
[ ] Darkfather

You should also change into your costume if you're going out super-heroing. You should wear:

[ ] Your Warsuit. Not exactly subtle, but subtlety isn't exactly the point
[ ] Your green trenchcoat. According to PR, trenchcoats are all the rage since you started wearing them.
[ ] Your suit. Nothing says "I'm important" than well tailored business attire.

"Alright, Braniac," you say, shutting your laptop. "You better let Lena in before she starts clawing against the doors."

Braniac complies, opening the automatic doors connecting your office to the outside. As soon as they slide open apart wide enough that a small watermelon could reasonably be held between them, a blonde head peaks through, soon followed by a slender body as your fifteen year old sister squeezes through with impressive ease.

Despite the interruption, you can't help but chuckle. "Hello, Lena. I didn't expect you today," you say, carefully looking over her. Her blonde hair has grown slightly since you saw her, reaching to her shoulders and sporting blue highlights. She's wearing darker eyeshadow, probably to provoke your parents, and is has a stereotypically "cool" leather jacket over her school uniform (a glance at the clock confirms that the school day ended only a little while ago), which probably plays up her "image" to the well to do kids who probably never seen a homeless person that make up the majority of Savage Prep, along with those combat boots on her feet.

"Hey Lex," she says, ignoring the subtle inquiry, plopping down on the seat in front of your desk and dropping her heavy backpack next to her. The heavy sound echoes slightly in your mostly metal and glass office, causing Brainiac to cut in, asking "May I take your bag Lena?"

Brainiac's voice coming out suddenly from nowhere doesn't even cause Lena to blink. She instead smiles (something she didn't do for you) and replies, "Sure. Thanks Brainy." If Brainiac is annoyed at Lena calling him by her childhood nickname, he doesn't show it. A brainbot about the size and shape of an average roomba pops out from under one of the floor tiles, unlatches a hook that attaches itself to the backpack and drags it to the corner of the room.

"So," you say, trying to tone down the "protective big brother" instinct so you can maintain a relaxed tone of voice, "shouldn't you be in work?"

Lena keeps a blank expression on her face, though you're familiar with body language in general and her in particular to tell that you just hit a nerve. "Umm... technically no."

You decide that that response deserves you're second-best fascinating eyebrow. "Technically?" you repeat, digging in a little deeper into what is sure to be a major discussion around the Luthor family dinner table soon.

Lena, to her credit, keeps her eye contact with you and a light tone of voice. "Yeah, in the sense that they're probably not expecting someone who hasn't been there in the past week."

You just managed to avoid giving a heavy sigh, instead settling to pinch your brow. By your count, this would make it either the fourth or fifth job Lena has been fired from, quit, or otherwise not working. "Wasn't this supposed to be the job you actually liked?" you ask.

"Kinda," she admits, losing some of her confidence. Anger she can handle, she gets enough of that from Dad. Disappointment is something that stumps even Luthor's. "I mean, I got discounts for the bands I like and stuff, but all my friends have ipods..." she trails off, looking embarrassed. You have to admit that you're a bit of a loss; you finished Braniac while you were still in elementary school, which convinced Mom and Dad that you were smart enough to skip regular education. Lena's grades are good enough that the school hasn't called you about the absences at school, but she's hardly had the same opportunity Coluan technology has given you. Add in the "Suicide Slum kid in the most prestigious school in Metropolis" thing, not to mention being your sister, and she's certainly in a different position than you were at her age.

"Ok, first let me get this out of the way," you start, keeping your voice as non-judgmental as possible. "Do Mom and Dad know?"

She shakes her head quickly. "No, I've been hanging out with the guys in the Slum, this is the first time I've had in a while to be with them."

Now you feel comfortable sighing. "I'm sorry about that, Lena, but I don't think that'll satisfy our parents."

Lena expression now shifts, looking far more confident. "Well, I don't think they'll mind with my new job."

You gain new focus onto the conversation. "What?"

"Oh yeah," she continues, crossing one leg over the other. "It's a job at big company. Just a low level thing, but it'll keep me out of the Slum, and Dad wants me to advance myself like you anyways."

"... Lena, are you asking me for a job?" you ask incredulously.

Lena raises an eyebrow of her own. "Are you offering?"

Lena's job situation:
[] Of course! Welcome to the family business!
[] No. I literally just had to contain an interdimensional supervillain here. My little sister is not going to be anywhere near hear.
[] I'll have to talk to Mom and Dad about this.
[] Write-in

After this, you've decided to investigate Stagg Enterprises first. Transmuto has been active recently; a slim lead, but you might as well start small. You should:
[] Contact the SCU. They've been investigating a connection between Transmuto and Stagg. Nothing concrete, obviously, but you might get some information there.
[] Interrogate Olsen. It's probably a lost cause, as Olsen is incoherent at the best of times, but you might be able to pierce a last-minute clue from his ramblings. Or you could just feel even more pity for the poor kid.
[] Ask Mercy about any security leaks. Stagg has to resort to corporate espionage to keep her stock options the same when her father ran the place, and since the Feds keep you from using your really good stuff to protect yourself from that sort of thing, you have some vulnerability towards that. Mercy can handle it most of the time, but if they're involving Olsen into this, you'll have to break out the really good stuff.

You shake your head, chuckling softly. "You know, you're a terrible negotiator."
Lena's smug smile slides off faster than one of the Bolts. "What?"
"Well," you continue, " your attempt at sympathy in the beginning shows that you're weak enough to acquiesce to my own conditions, whatever they might have been, you didn't offer anything to give in return for my employing you, and if I refused, I don't have to fear our parents in the way that you do." The benefits of being a grown-up. You leave that bit unsaid, Lena's more than smart enough to pick that up without you rubbing it in her face.
Lena's face morphs into an involuntary pout that she'd deny to her grave. "Oh," she mutters, starting to rise from her chair. "I guess I should have known you wouldn't give me a job."
You give a carefully controlled smirk. "I never said that."
Lena whips her gaze to you, staring at you with an odd mix of incredulity, annoyance, and glee. She seems to struggle for words for a few moments. Good thing that Braniac is constantly recording, moments such as this one are seldom to come by. Finally, she seems to come to her senses to eloquently remark, "Huh?"
You continue to smirk, enjoying the confusion you've instilled in her. "Truth be told, I've been considering hiring you in some compacity for a while now. Granted, I was probably just going to by the record store" - Lena snorts at your outdated phrase, you continue unabated lest she realize it was purposeful - "but you're a Luthor. You want the best. And to be the best."
Lena gives a rare smile of gratitude. The Slum isn't the healthiest environment for one's self esteem, and your parent's stubborn insistence on self-reliance doesn't always help when relating to people outside of it. Giving her her rightful praise for her ambition at the expense of that self-reliance must come rarely. Seizing on the moment, you let your smile become more natural as you continue. "Still, you do need to understand that Mom and Dad will find out about this sooner or later. If we're going to go through with this, then we need to go about this in two ways: firstly, you need to be the one talking."
Lena's eyes widen, and her mouth begins to open as she prepares a rebuttal (and probably a fair share of swearing). You quickly raise a hand to stop a probable deluge and continue, "Now that won't mean that you'll be arguing your case alone, I'll be there if you want me to be. But you know as well as I do that they'll only listen if you make it clear that this is your own choice. I can't play big brother and expect Mom and Dad to think that I'm holding your hand every step of the way. If you can show them that you're not a baby anymore, then they'll stop treating you like one."
Lena lets out a cynical sigh, the kind that teenagers have in way gotten old enough to use. "I've been trying to show them-"
"Acting like a brat doesn't show anything," you interrupt bluntly. Lena responds by sticking her tongue out, not really helping her case by doing so. Then again, she could have flipped the bird, so you count yourself lucky.
After a moment of careful thought, Lena throws up her hands in defeat, groaning "Fine, I'll work myself up to it. Now what was the second thing?"
You grin as you cheekily respond, "Your office will be the company bunker."
The glare she gives you could cow Darkfather himself.
Raising your hands in defense, you continue. "I'm kidding, I'm kidding! But seriously, if word gets out that my sister is working for me, I might as well paint a target on your back."
Lena just gives you the kind of eye roll only an adolescent can give. "Seriously? Lex, when I was four one of your inventions made me clairvoyant for a weekend. On my eighth birthday the Legion of Super Villains kidnapped me before we could finish our cake. Hell, the reason Mom and Dad agreed to let me go to Savage Prep was because Reactra almost atomized Nelson High! I'm in danger by virtue of being your sister!"
You shrug. "Fair enough," you reply. "Still, Nelson didn't have Brainiac watching over it, and having some of his defenses handy will make me feel more secure about letting you work here, especially after the recent infiltration."
Lena blinks. "Wait, infiltration? Were there spies or something?"
You shake your head. "Sorry, poor choice of words on my part. I meant that a super villain got in our security perimeter, one that I suspect had support. My gut is telling me Stagg Enterprises bu-"
Suddenly, you stop yourself. You realize something: Sapphire Stagg is not only probably the biggest employer of corporate espionage in Metropolis, but her top enforcer and his various clones over the years are shapeshifters and technology wreckers.
Shit.
You rise from your chair, turning to Lena and saying apologetically but firmly , "Lena, I'm sorry, but I need to cut this short, there might be a security breach I need to check on. Can you please use my private elevator to get outside?"
Lena blinks a second time and nods, but asks "But what about my job? I mean, where will you put me?"

Choose one (will determine side missions):
[ ] R&D
[ ] Security
[ ] Public Relations
[ ] Internship
*Optional:Write in reason given to Lena for chosen job and/or task for her in chosen job
Sorry if it's short, mbut it's late, and I'm tired. Next update will have Mercy, I promise.
