• The site has now migrated to Xenforo 2. If you see any issues with the forum operation, please post them in the feedback thread.
  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Preventing new accounts from posting in the rants section.

Problem: Too many trolls coming across from SB/SV and making accounts specifically to post vitriol in the rants section. They usually don't even bother to read the rules before they start throwing about insults.

Proposed solution: 50 Posts required before you an post in the rants section?

Its been an ongoing problem. All of the trolls and cases of abuse that we've had to deal with have been new accounts made to troll the rants section.

There are useful and interesting posts made by new accounts sometimes, and it will be sad to miss those, but for the most part when someone makes a new account and gravitates to the rant section, its to troll. They rarely ever post outside of that section and never contribute to the site.

Thoughts?

If that can be implemented practically, it seems reasonable. Fifty seems a bit high, though; You yourself only have 152 as of this post. Maybe thirty would be better?

Or perhaps make it so that the rants threads are invisible, like the NSFW section is to guests, until a user has twenty posts under their belt?

Only ChrisNuttall seems to be the real problem... But if others like him come, then perhaps we'll need something like that.

He's a recent one. Previous problems include Foamy and Seadart as well as numerous others. I don't include people who come across to debate in good faith on this list. Only the obvious trolls who are out to cause damage.

Well, there's also the issue that if you block all posts from members >50 posts, all that needs to be done is make 50 posts, and then you can troll to your heart's content. This Chris guy is apparently a writer, so it wouldn't exactly be hard to rack up that many posts by transferring a story or two over to the archives.

It is already invisible to guests.

Perhaps that is the problem? The most new people who start exclusively there are trolls, because being another troll's buddy is one of the most likely ways to find out about the existence of Rants prior to registration?

(Consequence: If it were public, the absolute number of trolls might rise, but we might get far more new people who genuinely came to complain about stuff on SB/SV/whatever.)

It would stop casual abuse of the system though. Also, we don't know that its actually Chris. I know nothing about the guy, but as a professional author who writes books for a living involving underage or near underage characters fighting (and dying in horrible ways to) undead and having offscreen relations, I'd assume he'd have better taste than to make an account on qq just to throw insults at its members.

Am I giving him too much credit?

Anyway, regardless. If he was forced to contribute in order to make his offensive posts, I'd be satisifed with that. My objection is primarily aimed at people who come across SOLELY to troll, without ever contributing to the site. Destructive behavior basically.

If we make it harder for them to do this, that's a win in my book.

I seriously don't get the appeal of going on another Board to insult them. What purpose does it serve aside from demonstrating how much of a obsessed staking nutcase you are ?

By their own words we are "the enemy", and one must never show respect to their enemies, ever (because that would be no fun for the trolls). Especially the ones that silently took their ball and went home when asked to, unlike the rabble rousing they pulled at their departure. Heaven forbid you show people you disagree with any courtesy or respect.

*sigh* This the kind of mentality that led to the Nazis. Seriously.

Ah,Interesting stituation.

Average person will think the porn site will try to go to other board but bthe truth is opposite.

The NSFW is the one that more polite and more agree to gentlemen code. :D

The "holier than thou" site is the one that go to insult people that don't agree with them.

I think gentlemen code is try not to cause"board war" or something? That should be behavior of teenager that don't have anything to do with their time.

Try to be better man and ignore them .The debate on good faith need to open to counter agruement of opposite party.

But that don't work with cult-like personality ,that have dogmatic believe.

Try to ban them is not effective just save their comment and remind them in the future of their agruement tactic.

Hmmmm....is there an option to selectively make a thread invisible?

My thought is to make the offensive ranting threads, or even troll threads in general, invisible to everyone except their OP(and mods of course). That way the troll can still see it, but nobody can respond. Eventually they would get bored. It would require the mods to actively police them, but if it's made to be a simple check box or something simple to do it wouldn't be too tiresome to do.

*edit*

Just saw the issue in question(was higher up on the recent posts list than this one).

Yeah, it wouldn't work there due to it being an established thread but it sounds like a solution to the active trolls. not the End All solution, but another method to make them get bored and leave if it appears that everyone is just ignoring them outright

Well... I disagree. It is rant section, after all, and frankly, I'd rather SeaDart, Foamy, ChristNutAll out there focused ranting and trolling at Rant subforum than doing it at Quest/Story thread.
