Would it be possible to add the feature to able to filter the news feed?

I have a bunch of authors I follow, but its impossible to get a notification in my news feed when they start a new story or update a thread that I don't watch due to my news feed being spammed by lines and lines of notifications that the author I follow has liked a post.
Just being able to filter out the likes, which takes up 98% of my news feed or alternatively being able to configure and disable notifications to my news feed if the author I follow likes a post would clean up the news feed significantly.
There is an option in the "Alert Preferences" to disable being notified if your own post is liked, but no configuration whatsoever for receiving alerts from people you follow in your news feed.
