  • Due to issues with external spam filters, QQ is currently unable to send any mail to Microsoft E-mail addresses. This includes any account at live.com, hotmail.com or msn.com. Signing up to the forum with one of these addresses will result in your verification E-mail never arriving. For best results, please use a different E-mail provider for your QQ address.
  • For prospective new members, a word of warning: don't use common names like Dennis, Simon, or Kenny if you decide to create an account. Spammers have used them all before you and gotten those names flagged in the anti-spam databases. Your account registration will be rejected because of it.
  • Since it has happened MULTIPLE times now, I want to be very clear about this. You do not get to abandon an account and create a new one. You do not get to pass an account to someone else and create a new one. If you do so anyway, you will be banned for creating sockpuppets.
  • Due to the actions of particularly persistent spammers and trolls, we will be banning disposable email addresses from today onward.
  • The rules regarding NSFW links have been updated. See here for details.

Basically as it says on the title, it would probably be helpful for new members to actually have to read the rules before posting. There's no way to be sure that someone has actually read the rules if there's just an 'I accept' checkbox or button. People will skip over the rules as most of them and the associated sub-rules are basic decency or pretty obvious and don't really need to be specifically brought up.

The issue is that some rules have one or two sub-rules that often get people in trouble. Rule 3 bans ExHentai, but people still post links there on occasion. The same happens with necromancy and kink-shaming. If QQ adds a short quiz to the page where you agree to these rules (I'm assuming the rules are included on that page), new members can be forced to read those sub-rules that they might otherwise ignore.

I was thinking something along the lines of:

Welcome to QQ, before posting we want to make sure you understand a few details of the rules you read above. Here are a few questions that will show you have read the rules.

Which of the following statements violates Rule 1?
  • NTR is trash and people who like it are trash
  • NTR is disgusting
  • NTR disgusts me
Which of the following websites are banned on QQ under Rule 3?
  • Imgur
  • ExHentai
  • Dropbox
Posting in dead threads is not permitted, how long does it take for a thread to be considered dead?
  • One week
  • Two weeks
  • One month
  • Two months
----

As much as I'd hate to do it myself, if a new rule is added that acts as a significant change in how something is done here, it may be good to require all posters to redo the quiz.

I see where you're coming from, but my gut feeling is that writing the quiz, administering the quiz, dealing with technical issues, dealing with people failing (for various reasons), etc; all of that seems like it might actually add up to even more work for the moderators etc compared to just dealing with rules violations as they occur. And like, estimating how much this would reduce violating the rules, it's like, that would be what, a 30% reduction, optimistically?

People that make honest mistakes can usually be dealt with on an individual basis with a bit of patience, the semi-maniacs we're willing to tolerate would just have another thing to complain about, and the Real Maniacs that end up getting permabanned wouldn't really be deterred by this I feel like. So I dunno this fix would actually fix anything, honestly.

I'm not a programmer, but it shouldn't be much harder than adding more checkboxes and some words to the 'I confirm I've read the rules' page. Set some to be correct when filled, others to be correct when not filled. It shouldn't be much harder to administrate than the current 'I read the rules' page. Maybe mods would be being asked 'dumb' questions more often? Like, the rule is on the same page you are filling out the quiz on, so you can just read it. Correct me if I'm wrong on that though.

I agree that those who want to cause trouble won't be touched by this idea, but I don't see many maniacs. I see people who didn't read the rules using the excuse, 'Oh I didn't know that was in the rules.' I don't actually have any idea what kind of numbers there are for any of the violations. I just know that usually (almost exclusively) I see mods dealing with four kinds of violations: Necromancy, Kinkshaming, ExHentai links, and Going Off Topic.

Going off topic is something that happens naturally in conversation, so it's always going to be an issue. People have a natural tendency to want to argue a point or what have you, so mod action is needed to remind us to get back on topic. I don't think this can be 'solved' and will require constant policing action.

Kinkshaming can be a bit nebulous, there's a grey line between the black and white where a comment could be marginal. Generally the posts are pretty black and white though. The rules on necromancy and pirated comment links are clear too. The constant low level occurrence of these is probably pretty annoying, given that the rules are clear on what you can and cannot do.
