There is a castle located at the end of the continents peninsula, notable for two things. The first is the dead land surrounding it. The ground itself is said to be poisoned by some unknown toxin preventing the existence of all but the most tenacious and resourceful wildlife. Dead tree's, plants and black earth is the only remnant of the life that existed prior to the event which caused the lands sickness. This is one of the two sights that would jump at most people visiting. The other is the castle.

The castle is like non other in the land. It's massive size is large enough to fit entire villages inside it with room to spare, and it has risen high enough to dwarf the entire surrounding landscape overshadowing it. Prevalent even dozen of miles away it is perhaps the largest structure to be built in the entire world and is known by all specifically for this. The quality of the tower is unarguable, managing to remain mostly intact despite it's immense size and apparent long age of abandonment. Though it is not exactly completely undamaged, the damage that does exist is not irreparable.

Not much is known about the castle such as who built it or when it was built, but for most people who desire the castle this is either forgotten or seen as irrelevant. Above all else, kings have sought to possess this castle to express their superiority or to gain a significant asset in their reign, but none who have attempted have succeeded. Most who try rarely manage to take control of more than a few rooms when a series of problems ranging from a lack of food to mysterious disappearances force them to give up. The few who manage to proceed slightly farther, dealing with or ignoring these problems, find themselves suddenly being assailed by another problem away from the castle forcing them to divert their efforts. To this day no one has managed to control the castle for any lengthy period of time and even more little of the tower's layout has been explored bar the entrance.

It is in this mysterious castle, in a room never seen or touched by visitors, that you awaken from nearly a millennia long sleep. A flare of pain in your chest immediately assaults you, but your mind is thinking of something else. An overriding question that you feel must be answered.

Who are you?

[ ] Name?

[ ] Gender?

In a flash, you recall something of who you once were. A memory of misfortune and death. Yours.

[ ] You were once royalty proudly serving your kingdom and it's people, nobility and commoners alike. Your people loved you and you loved them; but a simple mistake, not even your own, changed that. In a single day they went from cheering your name to calling for your execution and so your love and compassion turned to hate and revulsion. To the very end you called for power for your revenge and something answered.

[ ] You were once a priest/priestess, most piously serving your god. However; your faith only led to pain and turmoil. Your prayers were never answered, your comrades were never saved and you soon grew disillusioned. It was when you tried to go on a different path that the world and seemingly 'god' decided to act. Your lack of fate grew ire and hatred from those you once helped. Your life worsened, your friends left, your health deteriorated, you were branded a traitor and finally a heretic and eventually you were killed. At your death you renounced your god and another made you a proposal.

[ ] You were once an idealistic hero, attempting to resolve the conflicts of your world. To the day of your death you had never stopped trying to achieve your goals and to the very end the world never stopped hurting you for your efforts. It was during the very end of your life that the world had decided to give you one last betrayal, your efforts thrown back at you. It was because of your love of the world that your loved ones were killed by it and at the end you lost that love and could only hate. You were given a chance for a new 'life' and a new goal to pursue.

Your memories brought a wave of negative feelings. Your hate and despair increased as you remembered your first attempt of revenge after becoming undead.

[ ] You barely managed to make any progress in your goal as an unforeseen level of retaliation quickly blind-sided you. You doubt the world even remembers your attempt.

[ ] As soon as you had began to make headway you were defeated as the world unfortunately learned of your threat. Your invasion was weak and you are merely a side note in the history of the world.

[ ] Your defeat came at the end of your campaign, by forces managing to overwhelm you with desperation and determination to save their dying world. Though you failed, you doubt that they have forgotten the misery and destruction you had wrought.

Abilities

Undead Knight [A]: Artus is not simply an Undead, but an Undead Knight. Like most undead Artus does not need to eat, drink, sleep or breath to survive nor does he need any organs or vital functions like blood circulation to act. Unlike most other Undead he can produce and control unholy magic and survive and regenerate so long as he has a set amount of magical power left and does not need to eat flesh similar to his own to sustain himself or to repair any damage to his body. Requires 1 power per hour to sustain body.

Unholy/Death Magic [E]: Unholy Magic is the direct opposite of holy magic and holds domain over all that is evil. Amplifying the powers of evil creatures such as werewolves, demons and undead most of these creatures hold some sort of unholy magic or have it directly implanted in their bodies. Artus is capable using most unholy spells, but is limited in his bodies ability to produce and contain unholy magic. Artus can produce 10 magical energy points per hour and can also gain power by killing things and converting to undead.

Physique [E-][t.E+]: Artus's current body is physically slightly stronger and more durable than a normal human adult. Though this power is contained in the body of a ten year old and as such is somewhat more difficult to make effective.

Convert to Undead [???]: The ability to turn a living creature into an undead. Requires physical contact and entails the user forcing a set amount of unholy magic into a living being to corrupt their own pool of magical energy and willpower into unholy magic which will rapidly change their body into an undead. The cost to try to convert to undead is the same regardless of the creature this is being used on and the only difference between them is how long it takes. If it is cancelled mid way or if the user loses contact with the victim, the process will stop and the victims remaining willpower and magical energy will try to convert back the unholy magic.

Skills

Physical Enhance[E]: Artus infuses his physical body with magical energy temporarly increasing the bodies overall physical attributes by 2/3 a rank for every 2 power point used. The magic would wear off after five minute.

I'm guessing the last modifier is Difficulty. Not surprised everyone's jumping on Hard Mode Bandwagon, Am surprised at how many are voting for the naive hero.

... Then again, corrupted Naive Hero makes Best Undead Champion.

Will watch this quest.

As your memories flood back to you, you find your mind becoming more clear as the fog of uncertainty and confusion fades away. As it fades, the pain in your chest slowly becomes more intense to you and you look down see a sword sticking through your chest. Than the pain explodes from a minor nuisance into utter agony. Not just from the single chest wound, but from all over your body. You roll over and fall onto the ground as your limbs collapse not being able to support your sudden weight. Though you cannot see it under the many layers of while cloth tightly covering your entire body, you can feel that there are multiple critical injuries throughout your entire body. You can barely move due to the phantom pain, which is greater than almost anything that you have experienced in either your life or previous unlife.

You can somewhat feel the magic coursing through your body as it pitifully attempts to repair all of the damage. You note that it is worryingly smaller than what you last observed it to be and you know that it will never be able to repair your body. Your current body at the very least.

With that thought you turn to breaking down your body. You cringe as your numerous physical attributes are lost, but you can't afford to keep them in your current state. Your body begins to glow red as your bodily powers and abilities are released to provide you with enough power to begin making headway in repairing your body. Your lacerations close and your damaged flesh mends. As your arms become operable you use them to get up and attempt to pull out the long sword stabbing you through your chest so your body can heal the wound.

Your hands burn as they make contact and you can literal see your red, unholy magic surrounding your hand begin to burn away. Obviously this sword is the reason for your apparent power loss and you are now completely adamant in your decision to remove it despite the pain. The blade can not withstand your might powered by your determination and it slowly begins to slide out of your chest cavity. Half way out the sword begins to glow a fear inducing white light as you can only watch as the red unholy mist is violently blown away from the sword and your face pales even more than it already is as you recognize what it is doing.

A second later the sword explodes.

A second after that and you can no longer feel a large portion of your body.

You fall to the ground on what remains of your legs as you nearly completely fall unconscious due to the almost completely all encompassing pain where your upper torso used to be. Your mind even begin's excepting death when you remember who you are.

You are an undead knight.

You will not allow such injuries to bring you down.

You release all your remaining unholy energy and are instantly encompassed in a column of red light. The remnants of your remaining flesh immediately breaks down as you begin constructing a new body using your remaining energy. Without the holy sword stuck in you, you find yourself regenerating far quicker, though you will later regret wasting so much energy in a crude regeneration.

As your body completes you fall down to your knees on the stone floor in exhaustion. You don't even get to feel triumphant for a second as you immediately notice something wrong. You look at your hand and see one far smaller than your own. Immediately something pops into your mind. Something you haven't seen for a long time.

Children.

The hand you are now seeing is almost identical to the image of the last child you had seen, though far more pale. Your body also feels strange, smaller even. You look down and check the rest of your body and find similar results. Something nags at your mind and you concentrate and try to pull out the remaining energy within your body to your hand.

It barely gives off a faint glow.

So apparently you only had enough energy to construct the body of a child. You now have almost nothing left in terms of magical energy and you even had to burn off all of your physical augments just to get enough magic to survive. You briefly look around and see that you have little idea about where you are and your memory gives no help in the matter.

You are beginning to panic by this point, but you manage to remain calm as you recall something or rather someone who may be able to help you. You stretch out your conciousness to call that usually familiar presence, but you feel nothing in return. You immediately freeze as you try again. And again. And again one last time to call that one being who could help you, but you are unable to feel anything there.

....

You were never truly a master of words, but you feel this one can adequately express how you are feeling.

"...Fuck."

So what do you do now.

Considering that I have already posted the update I will answer that you are correct. Mostly anyway.

The choices reflect what your last attempt at defeating the world was like.

The first one would have little effect on the setting as most people would probably not even know about undead by this point.

The second one will end up in people having a normal knowledge of undead and would mostly react accordingly when they realize that the undead were back. Though not all people would know this by this point since a long time has past.

Option three is essentially the scourge having happened.

I expect that there were other changes than just difficulty there. For example depending on how long ago we were struck down, considering the dying world part the overall population will probably be lower, though this is balanced out by everyone jumping on us the second they know who we are. I also expect no small amount of terror from people when they find out who we are.

These are also somewhat true excluding the population part, along with fact that technically speaking you are stronger with this option than with others considering that you did manage to get as far as you did.

So we are undead. We can gain power slooooooowly.

You begin scanning the room and the first thing you look at is the thing that you were laying on when you re-activated. It seems to just be an ordinary stone table and the only thing odd about it is that the top seems slightly damp, probably from the fluids leaking out of you while you were inactive. You look around it some more and can't find any other features to it and so you look elsewhere.

Standing where you are you look around the room at the walls and you finally notice that the light in the room is coming from a very large hole in the wall opposite to the door. You move to the wall and peak out to see that it is rather late right now with a full moon hanging in the sky. You also see that you are very high up in this castle. You estimate that you are at least five hundred feet high and as you look up you can see some other parts of this castle even higher above you. Something else that you finally realize after a moment off looking out is that the outer walls seem to be made out of some sort of metal. You can't quite see anything else in this darkness and so you move on to looking elsewhere.

As you continue moving you find your new body to feel rather sluggish. You recall in your distant memories that you were able to move better in your old body, but you guess it makes sense when you think about it.

While you are searching the room you catch sight of a pack of rats scurrying around the room and a pile a rubble lying in the corner. There is nothing else that pops out at you during your search. The walls are featureless, as is the ground and ceiling and the only thing on them is a closed, metal door.

You finally check yourself again, and aside from the now far more loose white clothing covering you, you see that you have nothing on you.

So what is your next course of action?

[X] See where the one door in the room leads.

[X] See where the one door in the room leads.

You open the door and see a well lit hallway in front of you. You can see another door at other end of the hallway and you head forwards towards it.

As you get closer you see that the door is somewhat different to the one leading to your awakening room and as you reach it you realize that it is locked with chains. You quickly realize that it is easily opened from your side and that it is most likely used to prevent anybody from entering in here rather than you from leaving. It does not take you long to unlock the chains and you push open the door and exit.

You see that you are at the top of a set of slightly damaged stairs which lead to what appears to be a large dining room with broken tables and pillars spread throughout the large room. Like the hallway, the room is well lit with many unnaturally bright torches. Aside from the torches, there are windows on the wall closest to the stairs along with three other doors on the remaining walls.

There is also collection of what appears to be rather old kitchen utensils and dishes on the floor along with signs of vermin.

What do you do next?

You look around the room now with a specific desire in mind. You are quickly able to catch sight of a rodent and without taking another moment to think about things you dash towards it.

Now actually trying to put power into your body, you find it difficult to control and almost immediately lose sight of the rat as you quickly find yourself stumbling to the ground. It is difficult to control or adequately predict the movements of this body so different then it's own and you find yourself having to actually think about what you want your body to do and how you are going to do it.

You mutter a curse as you push yourself off the ground as you turn to look in the direction where you last saw that rat.

To your surprise, it hasn't moved and now appears to be staring at you with what you notice to be eerily intense eyes. Something else that you have finally noticed is that the rat seems to be much larger than the ones you could remember and , even though your memory is still somewhat foggy, you find yourself off put by it's appearance. The rat appears to sniff in your direction and begins skittering over to you. You lift your arm and prepare to strike out and grab it if it attempts to run away. Instead of fearfully running away, it stops at your sudden movement. It reel backs it's body and suddenly lunges at you, barring it's fangs.

Your arm intercepts it in the air and you swipe it away from you. You had instinctively put some power into that blow, something you are bothered by, and your hit had not only managed to blow it away, but also managed to injure it greatly if the wetness currently staining your attacking hand is of any indication. You immediately detect the familiar smell of human remains radiating from the liquid and as you turn to look at the rat now rolling back to it's feet from where you had launched it, you recognize the look in it's eyes as hunger.

Huh?

How should you deal with it?
