Character Creation: Background (this post), Mechanics, Chancel
Arc 1: 1

This is a game about playing a mortal or almost mortal who now has to run a magical kingdom. It's going to use the Nobilis setting, though no knowledge of such should be required, and a modified system based off Nobilis 3e mechanics with a dash of the mechanics from Chuubo's Marvelous Wish Granting Engine, adjusted for play by post. Knowledge of Nobilis will not be necessary to participate, though it might help those who have it.

You'll be a bit weaker than a starting Nobilis character, which is fine, because you can still probably kick the ass of anything remotely reasonable. I do hope I can make this work right.

More exhaustive rules will come with the mechanical part of character gen. This game will be a kingdom builder one in that you'll be playing a character who builds a kingdom and protects it from external threats. Beyond that character goals are largely up to you.

If people want, this can go NSFW, I have no real goals or plans here, and a lot of the experience/setting is going to be user generated. Fanfiction can be included, though generally only if I know what we're actually including is.

So, let's play god. (And people thought Exalted was broken.)
--------------------------

Once upon a time there was a person. That person was ordinary as any other, living day in and day out in an ordinary life. Well, ordinaryish. Maybe not really that ordinary at all actually. In fact, that person was you. How ordinary were you?

[ ] A Vanilla human
[ ] More than vanilla human (Superman, magical girl, humanoid, jusenkyo cursed martial artist, catgirl assassin, power ranger, magician, pulp detective?)
-[ ] What?
[ ] Someone the audience is already familiar with (Make this a crossover! Subject to GM approval)

Gender?
[ ] Male
[ ] Female
[ ] No

And your name was?
[ ] Lazarus Quinton
[ ] Write-in

Well, you were that. Maybe you weren't ordinary really. Maybe you were exceptional, strange, mystical, unique in all the world. It doesn't matter. Because a god came to you. At once you knew it was a god. It was so vital and pure and fundamentally real, that having seen it you couldn't imagine a world where that god didn't exist. Axiomatic, it seemed so more more there than anyone else around you. And yet everyone else passed by without seeing it. They ignored that god, though you knew not how they managed.

Slowly it approached you, peaceful intent clear in its eyes. But there are many kinds of god in the world and they aren't all the same. What was yours?

[ ] A Magister of the Wyld- Chained to no rules but its own, alien and a world unto itself. Chaos made manifest.
[ ] A Devil- Wounded and cruel and compassionate beyond all others. Devils will stay with you no matter how far you fall. When you are most alone, when everyone who loves you has left you, they will be with you the most of all even if you hurt them or they can't help but hurt you.
[ ]A Magister of the Dark- Embracing the now above all else. Living in the moment, indulging in every whim, every momentary urge without fear of the consequences. Loving the drug addict and the rockstar, living a hair's breadth from death at every moment and enjoying every sin, every indulgence, every triumph with equal pleasure, loving suicides, freely chosen, above all else.
[ ] A Magister of the Light- Cold and removed. Your imperator prioritized the survival of humanity above any momentary gain or compassion. It had a goal, a principle, and would sacrifice anything for that greater good if the need arose.
[ ] An Angel- Purer than anything. Standing for the right no matter the consequences or the failures, more noble and beautiful and just than anyone. And yet heaven's fairness is ruthless and devoid of compassion.
[ ] A True God- Alien, incomprehensible, vast and primitive. It spoke not in words and only understood life in terms of such basic things as food sex and violence.
[ ] An Aaron's Serpent- Free and lackadaisical. Basically just your ordinary dozens-of-miles long giant snake/god.

That god, that imperator, chose you. It took something of itself and gave it to you, made you into a part of it so fundamentally that your very nature was changed and you stood anew as a power, a noble, a demigod incarnated in the world.

But what demigod were you? What did your imperator, your god, give you to hold? What estate is yours to govern as king?
[ ] Time
[ ] Fire
[ ] Love
[ ] Gravity
[ ] Gender Bending
[ ] Tea
[ ] Gold
[ ] Blood
[ ] Guns
[ ] Beauty
[ ] Noise
[ ] Adorable pictures of cats on the internet
[ ] Write-In (Kinda subject to GM approval, but if you can express it as a concept it probably works.)

And so you found yourself a baby god. For a moment you reveled in your power, in your freedom to exercise it. Then your imperator told you a story and you once more felt small.

The story told of a great eternal war that united heaven and hell, light and darkness and factions stranger still against a common foe. It told of those feared Excrucians with eyes full of falling stars, pale horses, their abhorrent weapons and their war against existence itself and their power that eclipsed even the gods'.

Your god told you that it must leave to fight in places you could not venture, even as changed as empowered as you were. It told you that it would sleep and trusted you to guard the land in which its body rested.

And then your god spoke a miracle to the world, sublime and terrifying, mystical and horrible, beautiful and sad. And the world listened. Some part of Earth became shifted and distorted, ceased to follow the laws of the mundane world in favor of its own laws. That part of the world, that chancel, became a kingdom unique unto itself.

And you were to guard it, to rule it as a protector, to defend the home while your imperator lied sleeping at its core so that it might fight.

Except... Well.... The locals kind of belong here and they don't really like you or know you yet. If you want to protect this land, first you must learn its rules, you must make it your own and claim your crown.

But first let's figure out a little more about you.

Marlin Gale: Monsters' Viscount

Skills
Will: 8/8
Friend to all living things (Even those who aren't so friendly) - 3 -You're really quite good at getting along with everything, particularly the things that generally try to kill you
Cool - 2 - How cool are you? You can totally get away with wearing sunglasses at night, if you wanted too.
Innocent - 1 - You're just a little naive, or a lot given what you work with, but it tends to work well for you.
Creepy - 2 - You're good at being creepy, sneaking up on people, looming, etc.

Traits
Aspect: 0 MP 5/5 -Mortal: You're able to always give it your best! But you can't do much better than that.
Domain: 2 MP 5/5 Instinctively you just know things about Monsters. If you push it you find you can do far more.
Persona: 2 MP 5/5 You begin to grasp the art of manipulating the dharma of your estate
Treasure: 0 MP 5/5 You have no particular affinity for using or empowering anchors

0MP- Perform any action at a flat intention level of skill+3. Use your skills easily and effectively, no matter how inept you are. A single moment of intent is enough to use this level of miracle
1mp- As above, but instead perform a flat intention of skill level +4
2mp- As above, but instead perform a flat intention of skill level +5
4mp- Succeed at any intention, also act with the calculating ability of a computer or the strength of a bear
8mp- Break physics, punching out a character in a movie to change the ending, shoot down stars with a gun, etc

0MP- Know when something endangers monsters
-Summon forth monsters in small, mostly aesthetic ways. Tend to have very small effects that fade quickly.
-Know a monster's powers and weaknesses
- Ask things of monsters, communicate with monsters even if they lack language and persuade them to do things they might reasonably do otherwise
1MP- Protect a monster from harm, strengthen it or make it more enduring. Protect a vampire from sunlight, transform a human-sized monster into one the size of a small building
2MP- Conjure monsters out of thin air or summon nearby ones, control monsters and direct them against your enemies.
4MP-Ask things of monsters as a whole, know things that any monster knows
-Destroy a monster instantly
-Change the destiny, context, or purpose of a monster, assigning them a new role and forcing the universe to adapt to them. Declare that a particular vampire will find love with some vaguely emo girl with self esteem issues.
-Greatly enhance or protect a monster. Transform an ordinary vampire into a one of a kind pureblooded nosferatu. Take a starving wolf cub and make it into a wolf that can swallow the sun
8MP-
-Summon or control incredibly powerful monsters from Godzilla to Cthulhu
-Erase entire species of monsters from the earth
-Perform Large Scale miracles of movement and dharma, ensuring Godzilla will always attack Boston, rewrite history so that Dracula was a Chinese emperor or that mummies were a Roman creature.

0MP- Recognize monsters on sight as well as monster tamers, monster slayers and those haunted by monsters
- Protect someone from harm by monsters in small ways, make someone more likely to become a monster's victim of the week or protecting someone from the passive effects of a kaiju's wrath.
- Spend a scene as Dracula or a werewolf or Cthulhu
1MP- Become a monster, declare yourself undying or seductively repulsive.
2MP- Transform someone into a monster, make them less than god but more than man
4MP- Declare that Dracula was never a monster, just a vicious count famous for his harsh behavior, remove the monsterness from something or someone on a local scale
-Incarnate yourself in every monster on earth, or several thousand throughout the universe
-Declare that a California cheerleader is a destined vampire slayer or that a young girl is doomed to always be a victim of monsters no matter what she does.
8MP- Transform someone into a terrifying and powerful monster, declare that forest fires are born from the dreams and hopes of men
-Steal the monsterness from something on a large scale. Instead of a rampaging beast, Godzilla becomes a friend to all the children and a savior of the world
-Declare that Tokyo is doomed to always be attacked by monsters or that no monster may dare set foot in Boston without facing destruction.

0MP- Claim something or someone as an anchor, making them (at your discretion) one of the best mundane items of their kind- A random butler found in a help wanted ad turns out to possess world class skills. Also becomes free of charge at your choice
1MP- Possess an anchor, shifting your consciousness into their body, but limiting yourself to their abilities for the duration
2MP- Act through an anchor, directing them and granting them some power at your discretion
4MP- Claim a wondrous anchor, something such as a flying carpet or a magical sword that wields itself. These anchors resonate with your soul or your estate. Invoke such an anchor's power
-Bring an anchor to you and invoke its normal powers as a miraculous action that ignores mundane restrictions entirely
8MP- Strengthen an anchor for a moment, invoking its power as a wondrous action
-Declare that a wondrous anchor brings about a certain result. Your magic sword wins a fight for you, that your butler helped a group of troubled teens. Takes longer with more unreasonable or larger outcomes.
-Claim a miraculous anchor, something as powerful and metaphysically weighty as you. Tame the eldritch beast living in your shadow or acquire the last of the real dragons as a mount.
-Act in harmony with a miraculous anchor, pooling your powers together to achieve a result.

Auctoritas Magister- You may spend up to 2mp to empower your auctoritas magister and become a breaker of miracles, a beacon of normality in the magical world. By default this shelters you from the effects of all miracles save those specifically aimed at breaking through your auctoritas, but a stronger auctoritas can protect against even those. This must be consciously sustained.

Divine Mantle- You may spend up to 2 MP to invoke your divine mantle, cloaking yourself in the horrid glory of monsters' estate and revealing your godhood to the world. While active your every action is strengthened by miraculous edge aimed at overpowering the miracles of others.

Bonds/Afflictions

  • Bond: When someone sick of being human begs me to help them, I must make them into a monster 3
  • Affliction: When someone ventures alone into a dark alley and whisper my name three times, I am there 1
  • Affliction: Nothing in this world may wish me harm 1
  • Bond: I see the Wonder inherent in all things 1

Description

You're of above average height and average build. Your eyes are... well, that would require the sunglasses coming off to know, wouldn't it? Besides you're cool enough to wear sunglasses at night without looking like a dork.

You tend to be quiet, not because you don't have anything to say, or because you're slow or disinterested. You just find that listening is a lot more interesting than talking. People are neat! Besides, when you don't overuse them, the words you do use tend to carry more weight.

Find love she said... How exactly are you supposed to govern something you've never willingly admitted to yourself as being capable of (or currently in). In her ignorance she rewrote the world when she made her directive.

As much as the idea of Yuki Nagato running around becoming an embodiment of love without really understanding the concept herself sounds like a really awesome plot... I honestly think that that one might be a bit beyond my abilities and the amount of effort I want to put into the quest.

I'm sorry.

All other votes look fine.

I've always found that concrete estates are easier to work with than abstract estates, and are no less powerful. (Seriously, in a matchup between the Power of Cats and the Power of Love, my money would be on Cats, almost every time.) See those Properties? One of a Noble's more interesting tricks is to make a thing less like their Estate by removing a Property of their Estate from it. Or make it more so, by imposing a Property. (We're not actually voting on Properties yet, if at all, so those are really just examples.)

I also suggest that our Imperator be of Eyes, Glass, Sand, Fashion, and Dread.

Changing my vote. I like the amount of detail.

The big issue is that you could honestly probably play canon Haruhi as a game of Nobilis. Doubling up on Yuki's powers would just a bit iffy.

Edit: Meh, have time now. Post incoming.

It looks like [X] Xicree is the winner.

Your name is Marlin Gale. Yesterday you were an ordinary person, a passerby on the street, an extra in someone else's story. You weren't particularly significant. Oh sure, you touched some lives, you helped some people, had friends and family and enemies. But in the big picture, well, you were small.

Even so, the least insignificant grain of sand still matters. What kind of grain of sand were you?
Please vote on skills as a package.
Choose skills passions. You can spend 8 points. Skills describe an entire profession or category of activity, cooking, swordsman, knight, doctor, lawyer, detective, etc. You can also take a skill at -1, but you get no benefits in return for this.

Two special skills exist.

Cool: Just makes you kind of cool and awesome and hard to stop. When people or the world try to interfere with you or make you look bad, your cool helps you stop them.

Shine: You're inspiring or perhaps a tactical genius. When people take actions you suggested or to help you, they can use your shine instead of their own skills. Amazing leadership.

No skill may be rated higher than five.

Novelist 3
Fly-Fishing 2
Connection (wife) 2

Lawyer 2
Martial arts 1
Calm under pressure 2
"You can count on me." 1

"Just as planned": 2
Shine: 3
Student: 2
Chessmaster: 1

These are examples, no need to stick with them at all.

Today that's different. Today you matter. Your hands can reach out and pluck the stars from the sky. You can look beyond the world of men and see the world of myths as it really is. And though it is but a small, twisted and awful part of the world, your existence supports a part of it. Your very self is a pillar that helps prop up existence.

Sure monsters are scary and strange and horrifying. People crave the death of monsters, they wish desperatly for a world without such monsters. But you know, deeply and fundamentally, that a world without monsters in it would be lesser for it. You've seen the truth of monsters, and as easy as it is to hate them, to wish them gone, you can see that the world needs monsters to be as it is.

Or maybe it doesn't. But even so, isn't it okay to be a monster sometimes?

Still, there's a question here. What are monsters?

That's what you govern. And that governing has changed you. The spark of godhood inside has elevated you to a different level. The axioms that bind and define your existence empower and restrict you. Do you appear whenever someone chants your name three times? Do the wicked forces of the world listen when you call? Perhaps you can't see goodness or maybe something mundane about you, a talent with poetry or a wound or injury, has been rendered so fundamental to your nature that it takes on a weight of its own.

Choose bonds and afflictions. For now you have 6 points total of bonds and afflictions to allocate (+ your treasure rating.) A bond or affliction can be rated up to 5, granting it a lot more weight and ability to influence your life for good or for ill.

Bonds are brought into play by you, the players. If you take a bond "blind" (I can't see) you will determine when that hurts you or use it to help you at some times. Bonds can give you MP when they make your life hard, empower your miracles further and generally do awesome stuff when you choose them to. A broken bond may hurt you though.

Duties, emotions, relationships (on your end) and weaknesses/limitations are usually bonds.

Afflictions are brought into play by me. Afflictions grant auctoritas, sheltering themselves from miracles and things that would impede them. They also create whatever miracles they need to function.

Pseudo-powers and unfortunate circumstances are usually afflictions.

And, most importantly, How do you manifest the divine power that you've received most easily? What makes you so much more than a mere mortal, so much more qualified to govern an estate as terrifying and rebellious as monsters must be?

There are gods who could wrestle Hercacles, whose existence itself is so powerful and great, whose might could cast down the stars or shatter the skies. There are gods who can command their estates to act, to bathe the seas in fire or call lightning down from the heavens. Their are gods known for their weapons, their tridents and spears and hammers whose legends rival a god's own. There are gods who may grant the nature of a thing to you, who can touch a boy and breathe the spark of fire or light or holiness or monsters into them and make that boy just a little like fire or light or a bit of a monster.

And there are gods stranger and more glorious still. But this is dodging the question. It matters not what kind of gods there are, only what kind of god you are. Well?

You have 12 CP to spend. CP may be spent in the following ways:

Traits cost 3CP per point. There are four traits.

[ ] Aspect: Aspect determines how godly you are. Aspect is rated from 1-5 and each dot costs 3CP. Aspect also gives you free cool equal to its rating. At each level of aspect you may do the following for free.
0- Always function at your best, ignoring penalties from feeling bad or being under the weather
1- A little bit of extra skill with anything
2- A lot of extra skill
3- And flawless grace/execution and timing (also the power to win at conflicts of mortal skill)
4- Plus superhuman mental and physical strength
5- And incredible precision and perfect control over your body and mind

[ ] Domain: Domain allows you to create, control and destroy monsters amongst other things. Each point of domain costs 3cp At each level of domain you may do the following for free:
0- Know when something endangers the existence of monsters (in the sweeping abstract sense)
1- Little manifestations and tricks that don't make a huge difference
2- Talking to monsters, shaping them and knowing things about them
3- Protecting and strengthening monsters
4- Summoning, creating or manipulating monsters
5- Destroying or banishing a monster with a thought, knowing a lot more about monsters

[ ] Persona: Persona allows you to make things more or less monstrous, bestowing or removing the nature of your estate from them or changing the way your estate interacts with their lives. Each point of persona gives you one point of shine for free. Persona costs 3cp per point. At each level of persona you may do the following for free.
0- Recognize deep bonds between people and monsters
1- Bless or curse someone with the nature of a monster (in small ways)
2- Incarnate yourself in a monster
3- Grant yourself the properties of monsters
4- Imbue someone or something with the nature of monsters, turn someone into a monster
5- Make something less monstrous, incarnate yourself in every monster in the world

[ ] Treasure: Treasure is for those Nobles who are defined more by their panoply than their powers. Do you wield excalibur, possess a pet shadow that devours everything? Treasure allows you to claim and empower unique treasures. Each level of treasure costs 3cp and you may do the following for free. Each point of treasure grants 1 more point of bonds/afflictions, but only things named in your bond or afflictions may be taken as treasures
0- Your treasures have no overhead. (A car runs without gas, a butler doesn't cost money)
1- You can possess them from afar
2- You can guide them from afar
3- You can make and use wondrous magical treasures
4- Your treasures aid and strengthen you
5- Your treasures are suitable tools for miraculous combat

[ ] Miracle points: You start with 5MP in every trait (aspect, etc) for 1CP you may purchase one more point in every trait. MP are used to push beyond your defaults, using more powerful or enduring miracles than you might otherwise activate.

Gifts: Unique powers that stem less from manipulating your divine nature and more from simply existing. They don't need to relate to your estate.
[ ] Durant - 1CP -You're really hard to hurt
[ ] Glorious- 2 CP- You can inspire incredible passion in people, becoming beautiful or terrifying beyond imagination
[ ] Shapeshifter 1-3CP- 1 point gives you a few alternate forms (wolf, human, werewolf) 2 points lets you turn into almost anything (living things, incarnations of the elements), and 3 points lets you assume literally any form
[ ] Active Immortality- 6CP - You can survive essentially anything. A nuke might hurt you some, but you'll heal in moments. You can't be permanently brainwashed, imprisoned, banished, etc except via raw miraculous power that eclipses this gift
[ ] Invisibility -1cp - You can turn invisible at will
[ ] Lightning Quickness- 5CP - You are faster than wind, faster than thought, faster than anything. You taunt your enemy and they turn around and there you are in front of them again.
[ ] Paramount 1CP- You are surprisingly strong (particularly at low aspect levels)
[ ] World Breaker's Hand 15 CP- Excrucian strategists can destroy anything with a wave of their hand, concepts, emotions, and ideas included
[ ] Write in (either suggest an idea and I'll try to stat it out, or if you know the rules, post a statted out gift. Subject to approval)

Edit: Okay, fixed, feel free to vote.

When you do vote, if you vote for someone's plan please just call them by name so this isn't too hard to count up later.

Monsters are not human. Even the Slashers are defined by their lack of humanity, their body distorted and personality ripped of humanizing traits.
They are always there, lurking in the shadows, around the corner. You cannot run, you cannot hide. They are always right behind you.
Whether from fear or unnatural fascination, one cannot help but gaze into the eyes of one's demise. Even those cloaked in shadows are a sight to see.
Monsters never die. Not only are they almost impossible to put down, but even death cannot end them. They will always be back, whether revived, or replaced, or spiritually succeeded by the fear they have arisen.

Monsters are not evil. Monsters are not friends. They are the other, the antagonists, driven to disrupt by their very victims. There is morality in some: he guilty are punished while the innocent escape. Other's are uncaring forces, predators that must hunt.

Respect the monsters. They drive the plot. And do not think the light of day will save you. Daylight horrors are much, much worse.

I don't know about bonds

Basically, I want our character to be someone who loves everything, including monsters, and is especially sympathetic to monsters because nobody loves them. This character hung around monsters and learnt to interact as they do, through violence and fear, but because of their coolness and immortality they never got the hang of these things called consequences, or how they affected people. As such, they act around people how they act around monsters, unless they are reminded not to.

Active Immortality is described in Nobilis as such:
Let's say that you want your character to be immortal. Not the passive, "I can't die" sort of immortality, or even the "I'm really good at not dying" sort, since those are better handled through Bonds and Afflictions, but the active "Whatever it is, I can take it. Reflexively. Shrug it off. And just keep on coming." kind of immortality.

The kind that lets you declare, "I defend." against any sort of attack.

The kind that can maybe get out-miracled, sure. The kind where if someone explodes a small sun in front of your face, you might have to spend some MP or take a moment's breather to recover. The kind where you've got this nagging fear that maybe a universe-ending incident would be too much for you to take. But also the kind that makes it clear that you laugh at nukes and poisons, and that you aren't so sure you wouldn't survive the death of the universe, that you couldn't handle being torn apart in a reality vortex or having all of Hell shrunk down into a knife and stabbed through your heart --

That kind of immortality is worth a gift.
