With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Huh. I mean, partial transubstantiation is useful (and a nice way for Paul to resist even bullshit that bypasses all reasonable defenses), but honestly, given how much of an Octopus is neuron (their tentacles are brains!), I would think that human consciousnesses could exist in some form - if you stripped away all motor function and coordination. Which would harm their mind a fair bit, but still allow a normal octo-lantern to use their ring and try to fight back.
Although it probably wouldn't be good for their sanity, meaning it would be more of a Kog Maw-you-can-fight-back-after-you-shouldn't thing. (Karthus?)

Also, it's nice to see Assimilation put to use. Subtle uses of the orange light (and benefits of mastery and ascension) are lovely, but asset denial+repurposing is the Point of Orange Light, and Apocalyptians are an excellent example of sapient, powerful, and morally understandable assimilation fodder. Will he keep the nigh-indestructible skin, I wonder? It's weak to x-ionised blades, but a construct with krytponian base surface durability should still be useful (and a sapient construct can both fly and generate weapon-constructs as if it was a lesser lantern, making Shaligo much more useful than Paul's recent arsenal...)

...why doesn't he use his New God minions more? The shipmaster is weak, but he could have helped against the OMACs. Streamlined heuristics to avoid choice paralysis explains a lot, but he should really train himself to think of throwing minions at more problems. Especially since the general public doesn't understand constructs, and his constructs aren't mostly demons now!

Edit: And there's no chance of Assimilating S'ivaa, but given that he's apparently immune to the Omega Effect (and probably resistant to the Anti-Life, as long as its only a piece or two), I really wish there was a way to aim him at Darkseid instead of the universe at large.

You know, I think Deep Six is going to be very confused when Shaligo doesn't come back when they return to the spawning pits.

Shaligo will probably be confused when he gets summoned back before his new master gets him to work.

And you're assuming OL will let them leave New Genesis without turning them orange.

Partially because it's ghoulish, and partially because I usually forget what he's got in there.

excellent chapter, and thanks Zoat for delivering on some assimilation.

i had completely forgotten about that Shipmaster guy.

apologies if this has been asked already, but are any other members of the OLC able to assimilate?

Is someone able to do a proper recap of Construct Lanterns that the Illustres has at his disposal? Would be helpful and it could be added to the FAQ page as well.

I think I remember the Hydra Heads, the fungus guy and the Shipmaster (now that he's been mentioned). Does he still have the fish people and the shade demon?

"The SI finds it ghoulish" is probably a pretty strong reason why he doesn't do it more often. Orange rings have a lot of advantages over green rings, but in return their big whopping disadvantage is that orange users have a hard time doing the most optimal thing if a part of them doesn't want to do the most optimal thing. A green ring user can go, "Like it or not I gotta do this" and use their willpower to "do this".

The SI can only do that if he can determine that a higher order desire can be filled by violating a lower order desire (not to do this). But the SI typically thinks he can handle most problems without summoning up assimilated constructs... and he's typically right. So if he emotionally doesn't want to do it and doesn't think he has to do it to achieve his goals, then he doesn't.

Yeah, the big flaw of the Orange light is that you can't do anything that you don't genuinely truly want to do, regardless of how much logical sense it makes.

Flying fishman looks down at his increasingly orange body with an expression of resigned acceptance. "Back to the spawning pits again."

"Identity Theft complete. Shaligo of Apokolips, you belong to the Orange Lantern Corps."

And into the power ring you go. What have you miserable lot been-?

Oh, that's a bad idea.
Time to see what's stronger, an Orange Power Ring or New God reality alteration.

DC gave the Six a method of resurrection because they are canon fodder Aquaman keeps killing.

Darkseid should consider himself lucky that Apokalips isn't underwater or it would probably be a suburb of Atlantis, despite all the stupid shit powerwanking DC has done to make people pretend like Darkseid is scary despite being a loser for decades.

A lot of the modern writers either forget or just reject Jack Kirby's original version of Darkseid, who is meant to be a paper tiger, like historical tyrants.

Ripples (part 17) New
23rd July 2013
12:12 GMT

Apokolips picked up the… Ah, ripple, in the presence -hah- of the Source… Which of course they did, Apokolips is Anti-Life central. The… Prison? Of the Old God S'ivaa was disrupted a bit, allowing them to access with via boom tube and take samples of his skin. And if S'ivaa breaks out?

Not their problem.

Except it is their problem, because the metaphysical event that separated New Genesis and Apokolips means nothing to an Old God, and if he wrecks New Genesis he'll head to Apokolips next.

And then… I don't know. And I don't want to find out.

I disgorge Shaligo from my ring and send him after Slig, the git who turned me into an octopus. I don't much care if he turns him into a construct or just keeps him occupied

"By Darkseid's taint!" Pyron loops around and speeds towards me. "What did you do to-?"

Railgun, x-ionised sabot around, fire. His loops evasive pattern and high speed make hitting him precisely impossible, but one glancing his to his chest is enough to make his eyes widen in shock. I fire again and again, striking arm and face-. Good enough. He's discomported and distracted as he flies past me, his spear half swinging and half held back to defend. But since I'm a flying octopus it's easy for me to duck around it and latch onto his arm next to the cut my railgun round made.

X-ionised knife to widen the wound and sever his tendons, and assimilate.

"Uagh!"

Compliance. Identity theft in progress.

Shaligo's thoughts on the issue weren't entirely clear, but he appeared to believe that S'ivaa's skin would make them completely immune to the primary weapons of other New Gods. And constructs, naturally. So far it's only worked to protect their skin, but that's something that might make their next bust-up with New Genesis completely one-sided if they get back to Apokolips.

Twenty percent complete.

Oh, and apparently if we just kill them, new versions of them spawn back on Apokolips with their memories intact. We have to take them alive or make them deader than dead.

Forty percent complete.

Don't pull the plug out of the universe and expect mercy afterwards.

Sixty percent complete.

I don't even care that these two aren't the useful two. I want them under my control.

Eighty percent complete.

Pyron lifts his arm with me on it. "Can we talk about this?"

I bite him with my beak. It doesn't pierce his skin, but I think I've made my point.

"Identity Theft complete. Pyron of Apokolips, you belong to the Orange Lantern Corps."

I send him after Trok, and then fly back towards the ship as he swoops ahead of me.

Open comms to Arsenal.

Compliance.

Arsenal, I've been turned into an octopus. You?

"I got the electric-. What do you mean, you got turned into an-"

He looks up as I float into view.

"-octo-." … "What?"

One of them can transform people into sea animals. And I can't turn back because I'm infected with Old God eczema.

I look around the clearing, noting a dead… Beatle-worm thing partly sticking out of ground, and two smaller ground creatures which look like a cross between wolves and flying foxes.

"You're not stuck like that forever, are you?"

Don't know, hope not.

Sserpa hauls… What's left of Gole upright. Roy shot him in the abdomen, and the shot bored through his body and burned through his spine. His legs are barely hanging on by his obliques. He's still alive, but he's bleeding out. He reaches weakly for one of his knives, energy cracking around his fingers-.

I stab x-ionised knives through his tendons.

"Nrgh!"

"Hey…"

Arsenal looks at me…

Yeah. That might be a bit much.

I take carbon nanotube reinforced tungsten chains out of subspace and bind Gole.

Sserpa looks a bit confused. "Why bind him if he's dying?"

I take my healing ray out of subspace… Then manually send constructs into his abdominal cavity and push things back into roughly the right place before firing it.

Arsenal nods. "What are we doing with him?"

If Troia and Lantern Rrab are successful, Highfather can have him. Otherwise… A sciencell on Oa. They'll take an Apokoliptian-

"Agh!"

-warrior.

I would smile if I could as Shaligo finds Slig. Arsenal sprints towards the sound, and I float behind at a more leisurely pace.

"By Darkseid's puckered-!"

I enter the small clearing where Arsenal has shot Slig in the mouth with his foam launcher, Shaligo having shoved him to his knees with the razor edges of his wings held to Slig's neck.

"Okay, dude. Change the octopus back and we'll go easy on you."

Slig tries to growl, but it doesn't really work with his mouth blocked. And then he tries coughing but that doesn't work either and I start getting a little worried about what happens if he throws up with his mouth.

Oh, it… Comes out of his nose. That's unpleasant.

Roy sprays it with his solvent and then steps back.

"The octopus." Slig coughs out the remains of the foam along with his own vomit. "Change him back."

"I ouhouhouh-. I can't. Darkseid did not grant me that power." He smiles. "He is an octopus forever! Weak and puny! And you will-"

I clamp suppression chains on him.

"-become-"

Slig turns into a seal.

"WAAAAAAH AWAWAWA!"

I… I'm not seeing any desires that would be out of place on a normal seal. Um.

I guess he can go in the sciencell across from Gole.

Arsenal turns to look at me as I recover the chains and send them back into subspace.

"Ah. Sorry."

Don't worry. We've still got two more to find, and if it comes to it I can just transfer my consciousness to a clone.

I look around.

Where's Mantis?

I feel like something happened to the Larfleeze constructs. He was using them as rings to hand out for a while but didn't he like, hand them over to the Controllers?

According to Dox, another Controller did something that either actively drained them all or caused them to refuse to recharge regardless of power source, as construct lanterns turned rings are different enough to be targeted. That way no one had to spend any time trying to track down any ones still in the wild.
What that would have done to the construct lantern themselves is anyone's guess.

I take my healing ray out of subspace… The manually send constructs into his abdominal cavity and push things back into roughly the right place before firing it.

I'm surprised the suppression chains removed his immunity from his own ability but didn't negate the ability itself. Is it because it was granted by Darkseid?

Not their problem.
Or so they think. An Old God made to be a destroyer isn't going to stop at one planet. And even if it takes him millennia to get from place to place, he will dance the universe to death...

Except it is their problem, because the metaphysical event that separated New Genesis and Apokolips means nothing to an Old God, and if he wrecks New Genesis he'll head to Apokolips next.

And then… I don't know. And I don't want to find out.
Why stop dancing there, after all? If I remember right, it'll take slamming him into the Source Wall to stop him.

I disgorge Shaligo from my ring and send him after Slig, the git who turned me into an octopus. I don't much care if he turns him into a construct or just keeps him occupied.

"By Darkseid's taint!" Pyron loops around and speeds towards me. "What did you do to-?"
Yes... Go for the six-pack.

Railgun, x-ionised sabot around, fire. His loops evasive pattern and high speed make hitting him precisely impossible, but one glancing hit to his chest is enough to make his eyes widen in shock. I fire again and again, striking arm and face-. Good enough. He's discomported and distracted as he flies past me, his spear half swinging and half held back to defend. But since I'm a flying octopus it's easy for me to duck around it and latch onto his arm next to the cut my railgun round made.
Ah, there's blood in the water, and the predators are circling...

X-ionised knife to widen the wound and sever his tendons, and assimilate.

"Uagh!"

Compliance. Identity theft in progress.
That'll be 2 of 6.

Ah, that makes a lot of sense. And presumably the fact that it makes everyone else sick is a handy side-benefit.

Twenty percent complete.

Oh, and apparently if we just kill them, new versions of them spawn back on Apokolips with their memories intact. We have to take them alive or make them deader than dead.
I wonder if Assimilation will qualify for that? Perhaps the next time the Deep Six appear, they'll have entirely new members to replace the lost...

Forty percent complete.

Don't pull the plug out of the universe and expect mercy afterwards.
A fair punishment. Now they get to do good.

Sixty percent complete.

I don't even care that these two aren't the useful two. I want them under my control.
Yes... Give in to the collecting instinct.

Eighty percent complete.

Pyron lifts his arm with me on it. "Can we talk about this?"
It was too late for that when your buddy turned OL into an octopus. Even he'd take that kind of personal.

I bite him with my beak. It doesn't pierce his skin, but I think I've made my point.

"Identity Theft complete. Pyron of Apokolips, you belong to the Orange Lantern Corps."
Ha, insult to injury.

I send him after Trok, and then fly back towards the ship as he swoops ahead of me.

Open comms to Arsenal.
Ah, finally getting the hang of delegating his pursuit goons.

Compliance.

Arsenal, I've been turned into an octopus. You?
Heck of an opener. Even for a comic-book universe, that's got to be a weird moment.

"I got the electric-. What do you mean, you got turned into an-"

He looks up as I float into view.

"-octo-." … "What?"
Yeah, that is a perfectly reasonable reaction.

One of them can transform people into sea animals. And I can't turn back because I'm infected with Old God eczema.

I look around the clearing, noting a dead… Beatle-worm thing partly sticking out of ground, and two smaller ground creatures which look like a cross between wolves and flying foxes.
Huh, so something akin to a bombadier beetle, but with an electrolaser rather than mildly explosive sharts..

"You're not stuck like that forever, are you?"

Don't know, hope not.
Let's hope it hasn't fiddled with anything deeper than the biology.

Sserpa hauls… What's left of Gole upright. Roy shot him in the abdomen, and the shot bored through his body and burned through his spine. His legs are barely hanging on by his obliques. He's still alive, but he's bleeding out. He reaches weakly for one of his knives, energy cracking around his fingers-.
...Honestly, he probably wishes he were dead right now.

I stab x-ionised knives through his tendons.

"Nrgh!"

"Hey…"
Assimilation at this stage is a mercy.

Arsenal looks at me…

Yeah. That might be a bit much.
Aw, no matched set. Maybe later, because you know the Deep Six will come for him again for revenge. They're dumb enough to.

I take carbon nanotube reinforced tungsten chains out of subspace and bind Gole.

Sserpa looks a bit confused. "Why bind him if he's dying?"
Earth Bullshit™ can fix that.

I take my healing ray out of subspace… Then manually send constructs into his abdominal cavity and push things back into roughly the right place before firing it.

Arsenal nods. "What are we doing with him?"
On the upside, he's doing that without anaesthetic. So that is hurting like hell right now. Fair price to pay.

If Troia and Lantern Rrab are successful, Highfather can have him. Otherwise… A sciencell on Oa. They'll take an Apokoliptian-

"Agh!"
Perhaps if you ask nicely, they'll let you have him.

-warrior.

I would smile if I could as Shaligo finds Slig. Arsenal sprints towards the sound, and I float behind at a more leisurely pace.
And I can't help but picture him flouncing along like a swimming octopus, despite himself.

"By Darkseid's puckered-!"

I enter the small clearing where Arsenal has shot Slig in the mouth with his foam launcher, Shaligo having shoved him to his knees with the razor edges of his wings held to Slig's neck.
Oof. that's a bitter mouthful.

"Okay, dude. Change the octopus back and we'll go easy on you."

Slig tries to growl, but it doesn't really work with his mouth blocked. And then he tries coughing but that doesn't work either and I start getting a little worried about what happens if he throws up with his mouth.
Well, there's really only two ways it can go, and only one of them has exit holes.

Oh, it… Comes out of his nose. That's unpleasant.

Roy sprays it with his solvent and then steps back.
Oh, that's got to burn. You think accidentally getting a noseful of soft drink is bad, if that's ever happened to you? Try stomach acids along the sensitive tissues of the nasal cavities...

"The octopus." Slig coughs out the remains of the foam along with his own vomit. "Change him back."

"I ouhouhouh-. I can't. Darkseid did not grant me that power." He smiles. "He is an octopus forever! Weak and puny! And you will-"
I think you're about to get a first-hand demonstration of just the opposite, I think.

I clamp suppression chains on him.

"-become-"

Slig turns into a seal.
Huh. Backstab backfire or suicide programming? Or did the chains somehow turn his power back on him?

"WAAAAAAH AWAWAWA!"

I… I'm not seeing any desires that would be out of place on a normal seal. Um.
Well, he's off to the respawn tank, I guess? Depending on whether that would count as 'dead'...

I guess he can go in the sciencell across from Gole.

Arsenal turns to look at me as I recover the chains and send them back into subspace.
Yes, that happened. No, OL did not mean to do that.

"Ah. Sorry."

Don't worry. We've still got two more to find, and if it comes to it I can just transfer my consciousness to a clone.
Hopefully. Although he's got at least one option to undo this. I doubt the Ophidian would tolerate her Best Lantern from being anything other than mint condition.

I look around.

Where's Mantis?
Oh, dear. Has he gone after one of the other guys and gotten in trouble?

All right. Most of the bad guys eliminated. Still the question of Vandal Savage's location, if he was here, and the matter of the Old God cells to deal with. Plus the mayhem on Supertown, but Donna and Arisia might have that in hand with Highfather sorted. Compared to all that, being turned into an octopus is tame. This will certainly make one heck of a story for the Team later, though...

I disgorge Shaligo from my ring and send him after Slig, the git who turned me into an octopus. I don't much care if he turns him into a construct or just keeps him occupied.

Bet that'll be a neat reunion.

I don't even care that these two aren't the useful two. I want them under my control.

GASP! A complete set of Deep Six constructs?!

"Identity Theft complete. Pyron of Apokolips, you belong to the Orange Lantern Corps."

Two out of six!

I send him after Trok, and then fly back towards the ship as he swoops ahead of me.

Not even a "Yes, Master" from Pyron?

I enter the small clearing where Arsenal has shot Slig in the mouth with his foam launcher, Shaligo having shoved him to his knees with the razor edges of his wings held to Slig's neck.

Wonder how that reunion went? Also, guess the praying was for nothing.

A fair punishment. Now they get to do good.

Or do whatever Paragon wants them. If they're like Demon Nabu, they'll act personable.

Shaligo and Pyron might find being 'good' worse.

Aw, no matched set. Maybe later, because you know the Deep Six will come for him again for revenge. They're dumb enough to.

We can only hope.

How is OctoL communicating for most of this chapter? No quote marks, but also no telepathy asterixes.

Also, I wonder how Ratctet will react when he hears about this.

It's mostly because I thought it was funny. But also becasue he'd started it and the chains cut it out early.
How is OctoL communicating for most of this chapter? No quote marks, but also no telepathy asterixes.
He's having his ring generate sound waves.

You know, I'm surprised that there isn't any godspeak from them, but I shouldn't have been.

Wow the Deep Six is really obsessed with Darkseid's ass...They want to do something, or do they just like to comment?

Lovely. It's good to see him focusing on the why again - it's been, what, since Teekl? - and noting that A) They need a Fate Worse than Death to keep them out, B) Apokalyptian, and C) Their danger if left around. He's still not going Eat The Universe, but in the right circumstances…

Well. He even noted that the first one would be useful. He might actually use them.

If Troia and Lantern Rrab are successful, Highfather can have him. Otherwise… A sciencell on Oa. They'll take an Apokoliptian-

Perfect.
