With This Ring (Young Justice SI) (Thread Fourteen)

Last time they tried to confront Boss Smiley they got yeeted so hard they ran away from confronting Boss Smiley.
So you forgot about the fact that they discovered how that shrine and his magic worked, and about the fact that Paul's planar disruptor managed to actually affect him?

Granted, I shouldn't be surprised, since you don't actually read anything.

I've actually talked with staff before about him. it turns out that they know he's doing it, and they know that he knows he's doing it, but he's not breaking any rules in the process of his deliberate bad faith misinterpretions, so he's watched like a hawk for whenever he actually does break the rules.

Unfortunately, or fortunately, trolling is not against the rules.

No, I remember that, I also remember it doesn't matter because you can't wipe out the Smiley Face as a symbol and Orange Lantern's disruptor only works across small distances.

You do realize that the fact that it works can now give them some info on him and allow them to research ways to get rid of him?

Of course you don't.

I appear next to Ghia'ta… And Oliver.

"Do you have an example of the mutagen? I can probably scan-."

Oliver shakes his head. "No mutagen, Paul."

I frown… Then look around the room. We're in a… Warehouse cum OMAC barracks, and there's a zeta tube…

"So..?"

"We've giving the new guys a day one test. Thought you'd approve."

"'Test' as in..?"

"Atom got some of the Sivana mookbots from your wargame back in working order. It's nothing they can't handle."

"I'm… Not sure…"

"You kids fought Mister Twister on your first day. Speedy and I hadn't been superheros for long when we fought Ezra Samson."

"Didn't he… Die..?"

"Yeah, and these are mookbots. They aren't smart enough to be alive. If one of the new kids uses lethal force, that's something we can feed back on."

I sigh. I don't like this, but they all went through the Anti-Life. They've fought for their lives before and most of them have probably killed before. And the Mountain was penetrated several times while I was training and I turned out alright.

"And we're telling them afterwards that's what it was?"

"We can hardly give them feedback if we don't. I know it seems kinda underhanded-."

"It is underhanded, but I get it. I'd have appreciated knowing in advance, but… Fine."

"Nnamdi's a telepath, and Tim Hunter… I'm not all that sure what his thing is, but he's probably got some way to pull info out of nowhere."

I nod. "Probably. Alright. But why not just leave me in the dark completely? I already gave you my teaching schedule."

"Paul, you just gave them all inertia belts. Those almost completely remove the danger from most 'safe' things we could make them fight. I was worried if I gave you a couple more weeks, you'd have made them completely invincible."

"I wanted to get to them before they learned bad habits."

"You… Wanna make sure they don't learn bad habits."

"Yes?"

"That's… Good, Paul. That's good."

"You..? Are aware that I've trained a lot of Orange Lanterns, right? I literally wrote the training manual?"

"You're the guy who describes himself as 'productively crazy'."

"Actually, I'm the guy who described Batman as 'productively crazy', but I take your point. Lantern Ghia'ta?" She jerks as if she's surprised that I'm talking to her. "What was your training like?"

"It was quite a lot like the training the Amazons go through. For Zamarons who are purely maltusian in origin, the use of the violet light of love is so instinctual that they don't train for it. I learned more by osmosis than direct instruction."

"Amazon training?"

"I'm quite skilled with a khopesh." She sees my surprise. "Zamarons are a martial people, Illustres. It should not surprise you that I was trained for war. To be precise, I fought my aunts, alien warriors and beast of all kinds. But I was not set upon by robots on my first day."

I nod, frowning. "They're still got the monitoring setup from the wargame, right?"

Oliver nods. "Of course. Robin's keeping an eye on them now."

"Then I think I'll join him, just in case."

Sunday evening
Right after Orange Lantern left

I shrug. "I just turned it on and tried a load of stuff out."

The gorilla's actually gonna read the manual. Jeez, how does he ever get anything done?

"Look, where do you live?"

**New York.**

The gorilla's actually holding the manual with his right foot, which is… A thing? I didn't really think about it, but I guess if there's superhumans then it makes sense there's superanimals. "And someone's expecting you back?"

**Yes, but I did not give them an exact time as I did not know when I would return.**

"Okay, but this place is way better for practice than where you live, right? You can just read the manual there. You bounce off the walls at home, that's gotta piss everyone off."

He grunts, then puts the manual down. **Gorillas are not aerodynamic. But we are heavy. I recommend that you keep your distance.**

"No need, man. These things absorb kinetic energy. And I'm way tougher than a normal human anyway."

**I am also tougher than a normal human.**

"You tougher than a normal gorilla? I don't know how your 'thing' works."

**No, just more intelligent and telepathic. I cannot even speak your language.**

"But gorilla are still pretty tough, right? I know a chimpanzee can rip someone's face right off."

**Pretty strong, yes. But not much tougher than a strong human. Not bulletproof.**

I smile confidently. "Well I gotcha covered there. I can-."

There's a noise, like an automatic garage door opening. I look around, trying to work out-. Hey, this place has surface access? I thought it was supposed to be a secret fortress or something? Whatever, it opens up, and I land, because it's probably someone from the Justice League -which, not gunna lie, would be pretty sweet- or the generation one sidekick squad, which would be less sweet but they still know their stuff. And some of the girls are pretty hot; our class is kind of a wienerfest.

I head over to the open ramp. "Hey there! Green Arrow left, like, an hour ago, but I can cover it!"

How hard could it be to cover for a guy with a bow? I mean, he's done okay for a guy with a bow, but… C'mon.

I couple of guys in… Tracksuits? Walk down the ramp…

Huh?

Oh, I get it! We're here after hours! They're the cleaners!

"Hey, we're just gunna use this room for a bit? So if you start someplace else, we'll be gone by the time you get-."

The closest guy runs at me, and-. The fuck? He throws a punch, but it's really telegraphed so I just step up past it and shove him back hard enough that he goes flying across the room, but not so hard I push his chest in. Last thing I need's a lecture about use of force, yeah?

Where's the other-?

I turn a bit, and watch him charge at the gorilla with a crackling taser club!

and I turned out alright.

You might want to get a second opinion on that.

Nnamdi's a telepath, and Tim Hunter… I'm not all that sure what his thing is, but he's probably got some way to pull info out of nowhere."

They probably know that there are ways their particular talents can be blocked, and they may not have any experience with robots, so they may assume the people they're fighting just have a way to shield themselves.

you'd have made them completely invincible."

Missing the title card.

You..? Are aware that I've trained a lot of Orange Lanterns, right? I literally wrote the training manual?

But these aren't Lanterns.

Oliver shakes his head. "No mutagen, Paul."
Oh? ...Oh, they wanted to get him away from the new guys. Don't tell me, they want to do a 'secret test of character' thing, huh? See how they improvise without guidance? I'm guessing they'll ping each person for an 'emergency situation' to get them together.

I frown… Then look around the room. We're in a… Warehouse cum OMAC barracks, and there's a zeta tube…

"So..?"
Peril of OL transiting without pausing to look, I suppose.

"We've giving the new guys a day one test. Thought you'd approve."

"'Test' as in..?"

"Atom got some of the Sivana mookbots from your wargame back in working order. It's nothing they can't handle."
...Why not just contact the Doctor himself and ask for a commission? Too wary of relying on a 'supervillain'?

"I'm… Not sure…"

"You kids fought Mister Twister on your first day. Speedy and I hadn't been superheros for long when we fought Ezra Samson."
Yes, but the Team had the advantage of a Lantern on their team for that one. Rookie or not, a Power Ring is a massive force multiplier.

"Didn't he… Die..?"

"Yeah, and these are mookbots. They aren't smart enough to be alive. If one of the new kids uses lethal force, that's something we can feed back on."
I'm guessing Ollie took that mistake that day to heart and honed his skills.

I sigh. I don't like this, but they all went through the Anti-Life. They've fought for their lives before and most of them have probably killed before. And the Mountain was penetrated several times while I was training and I turned out alright.

"And we're telling them afterwards that's what it was?"
And hope they don't suffer an 'Uncle ben' moment.

"We can hardly give them feedback if we don't. I know it seems kinda underhanded-."

"It is underhanded, but I get it. I'd have appreciated knowing in advance, but… Fine."
If nothing else, OL could have planned it better than whatever Ollie has cooked up.

"Nnamdi's a telepath, and Tim Hunter… I'm not all that sure what his thing is, but he's probably got some way to pull info out of nowhere."

I nod. "Probably. Alright. But why not just leave me in the dark completely? I already gave you my teaching schedule."
...Because you might jump in and handle it for them? No-one's gonna learn anything if the level 100 solves the issue.

"Paul, you just gave them all inertia belts. Those almost completely remove the danger from most 'safe' things we could make them fight. I was worried if I gave you a couple more weeks, you'd have made them completely invincible."

"I wanted to get to them before they learned bad habits."
Although the belts will probably encourage other bad habits. Flight and resilience make for overconfidence.

"You… Wanna make sure they don't learn bad habits."

"Yes?"
...I mean, he knows from bad habits.

"That's… Good, Paul. That's good."

"You..? Are aware that I've trained a lot of Orange Lanterns, right? I literally wrote the training manual?"
And how many have suffered from Orange Light overdoses so far?

"You're the guy who describes himself as 'productively crazy'."

"Actually, I'm the guy who described Batman as 'productively crazy', but I take your point. Lantern Ghia'ta?" She jerks as if she's surprised that I'm talking to her. "What was your training like?"
I can't help but imagine it like that moment from early JLA: 'Batman's touching me. Am I about to die?'

"It was quite a lot like the training the Amazons go through. For Zamarons who are purely maltusian in origin, the use of the violet light of love is so instinctual that they don't train for it. I learned more by osmosis than direct instruction."

"Amazon training?"
But for things the Light couldn't do, there's weapons and armour courses?

"I'm quite skilled with a khopesh." She sees my surprise. "Zamarons are a martial people, Illustres. It should not surprise you that I was trained for war. To be precise, I fought my aunts, alien warriors and beast of all kinds. But I was not set upon by robots on my first day."

I nod, frowning. "They're still got the monitoring setup from the wargame, right?"
If not, OL can oversee it from a distance. But it would put him at risk of being noticed.

Oliver nods. "Of course. Robin's keeping an eye on them now."

"Then I think I'll join him, just in case."
And being ready to step in if things go ploin-shaped?

Sunday evening
Right after Orange Lantern left

I shrug. "I just turned it on and tried a load of stuff out."
Ah, we shift to Risk for the initial perspective, eh?

The gorilla's actually gonna read the manual. Jeez, how do he ever get anything done?

"Look, where do you live?"
Hey, not everyone's as cocky as you are, bruh. And being durable like you are probably does make you a little resistant to consequences.

**New York.**

The gorilla's actually holding the manual with his right foot, which is… A thing? I didn't really think about it, but I guess if there's superhumans then it makes sense there's superanimals. "And someone's expecting you back?"
Hey, when you basically have four hands, of course you're gonna use them. Especially once you learn to start flying.

**Yes, but I did not give them an exact time as I did not know when I would return.**

"Okay, but this place is way better for practice than where you live, right? You can just read the manual there. You bounce off the walls at home, that's gotta piss everyone off."
However, he's smart enough to read through it quickly and understand it, rather than just poke around randomly like Risk did.

He grunts, then puts the manual down. **Gorillas are not aerodynamic. But we are heavy. I recommend that you keep your distance.**

"No need, man. These things absorb kinetic energy. And I'm way tougher than a normal human anyway."
Yes, and they can be overwhelmed. Better not to test those limits without safety personnel handy, even if there's a Purple Ray in every medical cabinet.

**I am also tougher than a normal human.**

"You tougher than a normal gorilla? I don't know how your 'thing' works."
That is a good point. Toughness is relative, after all.

**No, just more intelligent and telepathic. I cannot even speak your language.**

"But gorilla are still pretty tough, right? I know a chimpanzee can rip someone's face right off."
Chimpanzees got that 'crazy crackhead temper' energy going for them, though. Gorillas will just smash like Hulk.

**Pretty strong, yes. But not much tougher than a strong human. Not bulletproof.**

I smile confidently. "Well I gotcha covered there. I can-."
And once they learn to use the kinetic belts, they'll also be more bullet-resistant.

Risk is totally a frat bro, isn't he. I bet if he ever meets Wonder Woman, he's gonna have a hard time meeting her eyes...

I land, and head over to the open ramp. "Hey there! Green Arrow left, like, an hour ago, but I can cover it!"

How hard could it be to cover for a guy with a bow? I mean, he's done okay for a guy with a bow, but… C'mon.
At least he has a ranged option, Risk. You don't even have that much, do you?

I couple of guys in… Tracksuits? Walk down the ramp…

Huh?
Like-like design for the mookbots, of course.

Oh, I get it! We're here after hours! They're the cleaners!

"Hey, we're just gunna use this room for a bit? So if you start someplace else, we'll be gone by the time you get-."
...Not an unreasonable assumption to make, but maybe he should be a little suspicious? Ask to check IDs?

The closest guy runs at me, and-. The fuck? He throws a punch, but it's really telegraphed so I just step up past it and shove him back hard enough that he goes flying across the room, but not so hard I push his chest in. Last thing I need's a lecture about use of force, yeah?
Good to see he's smart enough to pull his punches against unknown opponents.

Where's the other-?

I turn a bit, and watch him charge at the gorilla with a crackling taser club!
Which is going to be a problem the kinetic belts can't deal with.

Fake encounter off to a great start. I wonder if the other prospects are getting the same 'random guys show up and start swinging at them' treatment? That's definitely a threat some of them are better at dealing with than others, but once they check in, the illusion's gonna collapse pretty quickly...

You have him landing twice; the first should probably be removed.

The Zamorans have been hanging around the story for a while, but I don't think we've ever gotten too many details about their society. They seem extremely different from other Malthusians offshoots. I recall Paul made a snide comment once that the Guardians for all their faults have been fighting "what I might tentatively call evil" for millions of years while the Zamorans don't seem to do anything.

For instance this comment from Ghia'ta raised the question, if they are a martial culture, who are they training to fight and why? Could they be convinced to fight evil?

And some of the girls are pretty hot; our class is kind of a wienerfest.

Let's see: Risk, Toyman, Timothy, Nnamdi, Hawk, Dove (male version), Aztek (female version), Kid Devil, Argent, La.gaan, Slager, and Face

Out of twelve, we got two women and ten men. Risk has a point.

**No, just more intelligent and telepathic. I cannot even speak your language.**

Are all the Gorilla City gorillas telepathic in this continuity or just Nnamdi and Grodd? It seems like OL is always lamenting that he doesn't have enough telepaths for all the purposes he might want. They might represent another hiring pool.

Are they going to get M'gann in to tutor Nnamdi since she's the best League-affiliated telepath?

…and nothing else in the chapter even slightly raises my opinion of him.

Oh, I don't know. Risk actually seems pretty quick on the uptake. His mannerisms make him seem more careless than he actually is. For instance, his explanation about why he was so casual about "playing around" with the belt was actually a good one. This is an environment where they shouldn't hurt anything slamming around, and Risk himself is superhumanly tough anyway. It's a good chance to experience the belt going out of control.

All of the ones who went through Brain's modifications. In the Renegade timeline, it was implied that the changes weren't genetic.

You do realize that the fact that it works can now give them some info on him and allow them to research ways to get rid of him?

Of course you don't.
You do realize that the fact that Boss Smiley knows it works now means he can research ways to counter it?

See the problem with this?

You do realize that the fact that Boss Smiley knows it works now means he can research ways to counter it?

See the problem with this?
And?

He'll either figure it out and Paul and Mist will simply have to figure out a new way to track him, or he won't, either because he doesn't know how or because his own arcane nature prevents it.

I have a little newsflash for you; nothing is ever a 100% guaranteed.

Everything has a potential flaw or workaround, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't use the method you have available, even if it's not a 100% guaranteed.

If people never did anything that wasn't a 100% guaranteed then we'd have never advanced beyond being fish.
