I had an idea for what I think is a cool worldbuilding thread, so I'm writing it here. It's inspired by Cyberpunk 2020/Red/2077, the Deus Ex series, Ixion, Metal Gear, Wasteland series and many other series. The posts will likely change as I think of new things to write.

The Setting Basics

♦ The world is in dire straits due to numerous ecological disasters, rampant greenhouse gasses and a limited nuclear/biological/chemical weapons exchange.
•The straw that broke the camel's back and kicks everything off was the unexpected eruption of the Yellowstone caldera.

♦ Due to a rampant greenhouse effect global temperatures have skyrocketed in many countries and plummeted in others rendering many regions nearly uninhabitable or completely uninhabitable.
• This would force millions into already cramped cities never designed for such large influxes of people, causing massive spikes in homelessness, crime and diseases.
• Many cities were rendered unviable due to extreme weather patterns, high/low temperature spikes and changing sea-levels.
• Many people would abandon the cities altogether taking up prepper-esque or nomadic lifestyles.

♦ Due to the many changes in weather patterns and ecosystems much of the land once used for agriculture is not viable anymore.
• Advances in genetics for crops and livestock and advancements in farming methods would help mitigate this but would not become widespread or viable for several decades.
• This would cause mass starvation in many countries killing millions and causing wars over remaining regions still agriculturally viable which would kill even more.
• These wars would escalate into full-on resource wars over the limited resources of these battered regions with some resulting in nuclear/biological/chemical weapons exchanges.
• These years are officially considered World War three but have simply become known as "The Dark Years".

♦ Many nations would band together forming supranational blocs (S-Blocs) in order to survive these events.
• The governments of these S-blocs vary from your bog-standard banana republic dictatorships and representative democracies to Cybernetic constitutional monarchies and everything else in between.
• It should be noted that it isn't uncommon for S-Blocs to own corporations outright, many development/agricultural corporations are actually government divisions.
• There are several s-blocs that aren't based on earth at all with many breaking away from their parent blocs and gaining their independence during the early days of intra-solar space colonization.

♦ Outside of the borders of the s-blocs mega-corps have sprung up with attitudes ranging from 'For-profit but otherwise pleasant' to ' tywin-esque pragmatism/brutalism' and all the way to ' Mengele style sociopathy.'
• Like the S-blocs before them a number of corporations would splinter from their parent organizations during the early colonization of the solar system.
• The corps range from entities that could be mistaken for an S-bloc all the way to small independent mercenary groups.

♦ The events of the dark years kickstarted a rapid scientific advancement in many avenues some good, many not.
• Cybernetics, robotics and nanotechnology have advanced to a point where its commercially viable to sell to the masses ranging from neural implants to artificial organs to artificial limbs or entire bodies.
• Biotechnology has led to the curing or treatment of many illnesses once thought to be incurable, while unfortunately also introducing many new ones.
• Advances in material technologies opened the path for advances once thought to be only in the realms of science fiction, like the many arcologies that dot Earth lands and oceans to the orbital colonies that dot the solar system.

SUPRANATIONAL BLOCS

The Supranational Blocs -usually called S-Blocs for short- are somewhat complex social-political constructs that are far larger than any nation-state of the pre-Dark Years era. As a whole, they're similar to the Supranational nations of Front Mission, just far more expanded due to the shear length of time they've been operating. For the most part, nations within the S-Blocs are primarily only of historical and administrative significance. This is partially due to the fact that normal nation-states can't survive in this era, usually due to lack of certain resources in the region, warring factions or subversion by a Mega-Corp.

As such, the various S-Blocs are the only traditional governments left that haven't either fallen into anarchy or been subsumed by the Mega-Corporations.

S-Blocs come various shapes, sizes, and governments and can have politics ranging from tempered optimistic to Machiavellian to outright tyrannical and everything in between.
TBD
Mega-Corporations

The second group of factions are the Mega Corporations or 'Mega-Corps' for short. With the dissolution of power from the nation-states during the Dark Years, these businesses are -in many cases- the Defacto government in numerous regions across the planet. Through overt and subversive force of arms, these corporations have taken over great swathes of the world that aren't part of the S-Blocs. The situation outside S-Blocs and territory is generally either land that no one has claimed yet or belongs to the Mega-Corps.

The Mega-Corps are one of the legacies of what led to the Dark Years, and while some of them aren't as bad as what birthed them, others are comparatively worse and will do absolutely anything to get more profit.

TBD
