It's one thing when the writer makes the MC very "American" or whatever, despite the setting being "Fantasy-inspired Japan" or "Chinese immortals" or idk, you might even give having the tone being "American" a pass, but it's like when the writer 'localizes' the entire setting--deportations, not-fentanyl, wishywashy sarcastic MC, poor commons bullying the powerful rich, this bullshit--it's so hard to keep reading argh

L from Death Note and Yang Wenli from Ginga Eiyu Densetsu are pretty close to "wishywashy sarcastic MC". Japan also totally deports people - it just hasn't AFAIK had a period of *not* deporting anyone to build up a backlog.

I ran into a sliver of a story on QQ that reminded me a bit of the space The Erogamer created in my head, which is rare. It's long abandoned, only about 10k words, and takes a couple chapters to get into that space, but I thought I'd mention it to you and whoever passes by. It's called "Hold Me Down." For the sake of fair warning, it's noncon, and that's clearly the writer's fetish, but that's not why I kept reading.
