I believe the tattoos he used to help create a framework for a soul by drawing in ambient mana disrupt ongoing workings cast on him, but don't quote me on that. It's been a while.

Oh, that protects him against ambient effects and prevents him being targetted, but it doesn't help when someone alters the rules of the universe around him. That sort of thing is a little more difficult to defend against.
