The classic "king pretends to not be the king so as to get a genuine response from someone who doesn't know he's the king" maneuver.
About the only historical King I have ever heard of doing something like that? Is Gustavus Adolphus the Great A.K.A. "the Lion from the North" who used the alter ego of Captain Gars. Peter the Great of Russia did something similar by traveling to Western Europe where he went undercover as a common laborer to learn what he needed to modernize his nation.
