    I think the problem with the latter is that those types of stories have one attractive male protagonist but no male and antagonists. You know it's like the NTR type harem stories seem more real because there's actually other guys, and if the girls are really that great then there has to be plenty of jealous suitors hovering around them.

    The battle that made him from just "Pikachu" into "Pi-God" is probably early in the franchise, when there was a sense of growth and competition, and probability of loss, when Pikachu battled against Dragonite in the Orange League finals. Looking back, that was surprisingly well done and exciting for a mere combat show, especially for that era.
