Working for the mox, I like that. I also like the idea of while David does want to protect his mom and the girls there's also a bit of a selfish reason there too. But I think david getting some kind of fatherly figure would work the best with him. What I'm thinking is a much older, almost grandpa like, martial arts instructer in the beginning. giving life advice inbetween kicking david's ass and teaching him how to fight. but as time goes by he starts teaching David the concept of a clan and the idea of a central figure holding it togher with the strength of his will.

It can show off how Cenobite morality is making David evil while having him thinking that he's being merciful by not just killing his bully and instead making the bully a harem boi
