But incest family traditions. Well like I said if one island gets to populated a new settlement is made on a new island, with all the old family ties cut away and new families risen up. Allowing mother and son, or sister and brother to marry without the former expectations. But how do I expand on this?

Family conflict. That's a hard questions because I want traditions of sons taking mother but I need a reason for why father's won't get mad and for why a son will marry anyone else, thus preventing a constant passing down of the mom to eventually the grandchildren.

Could also be symbolic of the new island keeping a piece of the old, and the old island taking on a piece of the next generation to remember those that left.
