I really like how you choose colorful potent words to crunch into these small spaces and tie together into greater meaning. That hit her or yourself line has a visceral smack to it

Of course. And you mentioned who would inevitably betray the Son which is how he gets hurt and loses the most important match. Well originally what I had planned was a Maine figure. The leader of a local gang that takes him under his wing in a almost father and son type bond, tries to get him to go to school and avoid this lifestyle. live a good life for the mom that has some romantic tension with him.

Basically in inverse of these usual story archetypes, where in the end Maine does not have a change of heart or sacrifices himself for like a true mentor and instead sells David out for a little bit of cash. And it will be more complicated than that. Obviously Maine will be under a lot of pressure by the corporation because of how much of an image problem David winning presents them.

Scrappy young kid from the gutter beats out every professional team and shows off how corrupt the new leagues are is not what they want. But not just fear for his own life, I was thinking the Mentor would also jealousy and anger over the kid, as he found a way to escape this shithole and live a normal happy life, when he could never do it no matter how hard he tried. David stayed pure and he sold his soul.

Combine that with the former rival turned best friend turned betrayer turned femboy wife. Two different people close to him fucking him over

And I was thinking the usual suspects that would betray him, maybe the loud mouth bully or the cold distant loner would be the ones who stay loyal either out of their own personal code or refusal to make deals and get involved with outside forces they can't trust. So someone like Kiwi would be ironically the loyal one.
