It focuses really hard on Lucy and by extension its kind of angsty, so the characters spend a lot more time thinking rather than doing. Which mean's that there's not a lot of forward momentum in the sense that the characters succeed or overcome their issues. Rather it really goes deep into their psychology and how their personal issues are causing them to go towards a downward spiral.

It a psychological styled book in other words.

I wasn't actually imaging her to be that submissive. Sure she would have her moments, but I was actually thinking she would be the one to push and explore more. With the mom being the one to focus on getting more girls, not just for her son but also for herself to play with.

She's going to be a cult leader, the mother of a new species, and the ruler of a new world, and she's going to be aggressively pursing all three of these goals.

I already mentioned the old man, how she gets the cube and her beginning research into it. Her joining an online forum dedicated to the occult over it, and how the slow boil war between the company and the criminal underworld has been making work even more dangerous and stressful, making her fall into this stuff as a bit of an escape.

I would say what really kicks it off is that she either gets hurt on the job one day or is caught in some kind of gun fight and does something clearly supernatural to save her life. Nobody else see's it and if they did it'll be laughed away as just some gang banger high on something, but will the mom tries to deny it. She knows something happened that day.
