But John Wick would work fine for the MC. I was originally going to do a head mistress or teacher that slowly falls in love with a younger student, and then renters the field overcoming a previous loss holding her back before. But the John Wick Idea hits a lot of the same story beats.

Trying to move on from loss and rebuilding a new life accepting both sides of him is the logical conclusion or evolution of the character. I'm shocked the movies haven't explored it all considering they made four of them and are planning spin offs to at this point.

A little bit further than John Wick. So the top end assassin could easily mow down hundreds of people, but are still very killable if they get shot enough times or tired by even the most basic goons. So it acts as a nice balancing act. The top players still have to play by the rules, but at the same time their so feared and dangerous no one wants to cross them.

I'm okay with more anime style stuff, but I want it to be a little more subtle. No breaking through solid concrete brick walls or melting steel bars, you know?

Exactly, and maybe stuff like killing intent or standing so still you turn invisible. Bullshit for sure, but not enough to to be overtly magical.

No overt special effects. Stuff like elemental damage is a no go, but stuff like punching hard enough to rip off someone's head is fine.

But Mortal Kombat I think does work pretty well with what I have in my head. As for Sci Fi stuff, I was thinking more biomodification but its a given in any John WIck inspired idea that every named character has to be a walking armory.
