    Because its actually a loan word in Japanese. The kana and the creature it relates to are different. When you write qirin, you often use furigana to explain which one you mean. Japanese actually has a lot of words like that, borrowed from (usually) Chinese that mean different things in normal speech vs old speech, and myths usually use old speech.
