Chapter 21: Downtime

[Next Day, After School | Tsukimura Mansion]

"...So Yuuno, Nanoha and Sphinx got a day off?"

Those were the first words Alisa spoke after the group of kids gathered at the guest room. Both Farin and the head maid were preparing some tea and snacks.

Makoto and the others were given a day off from Lindy, something about a problem happening, and rather than have the kids stay aboard, she sent them home, even if only for a day. The captain also gave specific orders not to use any magic during that time. She and the other TSAB personnel's stares at the blue-haired boy showed who specifically she meant.

He nodded. He wasn't really planning on using them anyway. Unless an emergency occurred, but that's excusable.

Alisa and Suzuka were particularly radiating happiness when both Makoto and Nanoha entered the bus to school together. Their smiles and excited tones—particularly when welcoming Nanoha—were evident.

The former's reaction towards the other two boys was more subdued, arms crossed and huffing about not calling them with eyes closed, though the single eye looking at them, a mix of worry and relief, told the whole story.

The other heiress, Suzuka, gave only a knowing smile at her friend's reaction.

After a discussion, something about Nanoha battling the officers from TSAB other than Chrono and learning from them, the group then promised to have a meeting together after school, at their usual hanging spot—the Tsukimura mansion.

Leading to the current situation, where Alisa voiced her disappointment when she realised the others would be here only for a day. She was puffing her cheeks, her bottom lip pushing forward as she looked to the side.

"Now, now, Alisa-chan…"

Suzuka tried to calm her friend down, having a strained smile…while a familiar white snow-man doll was beside her chair.

Indeed, it was the snowman doll that he retrieved, repaired by his amateur hands as much as possible. The dirt and dust had faded away, returning to its pristine white, but there were still traces of dirt in it.

When the scientists of TSAB scanned the object, they didn't find anything that was related to the corruption. No matter how they looked at it, it was just that, a dirty, cute doll of a snowman.

Of course, Makoto could actually tell even without them checking, just from the lack of a scream, but it did not hurt to be careful, especially considering Nanoha's case, where the corruption hid itself before he closed in.

After restoring it, he didn't actually know what to do with it. It was a cute little thing, with its wide, cartoony smile, and squeaking sounds when hugged, but other than that, he had no idea what he could do with it, other than as decoration.

So instead, he did the first thing that came to his mind, giving it to Suzuka. He remembered she had a penchant for cute things, so maybe she'll like it?

The girl seemed to be surprised by his gift. Before her face blossomed into a wide, beautiful smile. She hugged it fiercely, then hid her face behind the doll.

"Ehehe, thank you, Makoto-kun."

He didn't need to look at her face to know how happy she was at that moment. Her happy, musical tone said enough.

Alisa, who saw the doll and a certain company mark behind it, seemed to be in shock. "T-that's a Jack Frost Doll! A limited edition even! They're almost impossible to find since the company making it went down!" Her pointed finger was shaking as she declared so, her eyes wide in pure disbelief. "Even papa gave up when he failed to acquire one! How've you even found it!?"

…Was it really that rare?

Anyway, currently, Alisa was now pouting, and Suzuka and Nanoha tried to reassure their friend. Makoto, with a cat resting on his lap, was continuing his repair on the music box from before, while Yuuno, in ferret form, was eating a biscuit on the table, his front legs acting as hands as he held the food, savouring each bite, with Farin sneaking in some extra food for the ferret.

Apparently, he wanted to conserve energy considering his low resources, but Makoto suspected he just wanted to have a bigger lunch. Actually, does the ferret's stomach even change its size if he wasn't in human form?

"Apologies for getting your hopes up, Alisa-san." Yuuno bowed between bites.

The girl quickly shook her head. "N-no, it's not like I'm blaming you or anything! I know you're busy with the organisational stuff in another dimension."

She blinked, the absurdity of her own statement dawning on her. "Wow, I never thought I'd say something like that and mean it."

"Really," a sigh escaped Suzuka's mouth, her hand on her cheek. "When I heard the explanation from Makoto-kun, on how he was on a dimensional ship, it really feels like we're actually living in a fantasy story, right? Yet, it's still reality."

"That's due to the TSAB, Suzuka-san."

Ah, Yuuno was in his teaching pose again, one of his front legs crossed on his body, while the other was lifted into the air. A small, green-coloured glasses even formed on his face.

One could even hear a few small squeals on how cute he looks, but they didn't know who.

"Just from their name, the Time-Space Administrative Bureau, their primary purpose is a security force, to make no world come to harm, especially due to magic and Lost Logia."

"But then," Farin raised her hand. "How come we never heard of it? If it's really large, shouldn't we have heard some bits or pieces of it somewhere?"

"The main reason is because Earth is a Non-Administrative World," A front paw pushed the glasses closer to his face. "In an Administrative World, the TSAB usually acts as the main administrator and peacekeeping power, where its members protect the public and order. For a Non-Administrative world, they try to keep a low profile and to not disturb the locals as much as possible."

"...So does that mean only people from these 'administrative' worlds are the only ones who can join TSAB, Sens-Yuuno-kun?" Nanoha blushed a bit when she nearly called Yuuno sensei.

But she couldn't help it, alright!? Just from how he was acting right now, it'll be harder to not call him that! Even though he's in his ferret form!

"No, not really," To everyone's surprise, he shook his head. "Anyone can join the TSAB, even people from the Non-Administrative Worlds, as long as they have an aptitude in magic, from my understanding. I've even heard of someone from this world who actually joined the TSAB a few decades ago."

The girls couldn't hide their shock at that fact. To think that there were actually people on Earth, not just who knew about magic, but who'd actually joined an interdimensional security force.

"The world sure is big…" Alisa let out a forlorn sigh, looking at the sky outside with a tired expression. "Though, from your speaking of another world, dimension and stuff… That's like saying you guys are aliens, right? Like those in the cartoons?"

"Alisa-chan, I don't think-" "You're right actually." "they're…eh!?"

Those words made all the girls turn their heads quickly towards the ferret, eyes wide and mouths agape. Yuuno didn't seem to be bothered by their sudden attention, continuing his words unabated. "From your perspective, me, and the members of the TSAB in particular, are not people from your world. So it's not wrong to say that we are aliens, people from another planet."

"B-But," Alisa pointed a finger at him. "You're human! And a ferret! Not some tentacle or black or wiggly thing!"

Now it's Yuuno's turn to blink, sweatdropping in the process. "...Is that how people on Earth actually saw aliens?" He shook his head. "Unfortunately-"

"You're right, Alisa-san."

Silence. A sudden deep silence.

Then, as if everyone shared a single brain cell, they looked at the most unlikely person who actually said it. Makoto Yuuki, who was still repairing the music box, was the one that said that. He was actually listening all this time?

"They are aliens in the literal sense," the blue-haired boy continued his words, his hands rubbing the gear with cloth before attaching it to a music box. "What you're seeing right now is just their magic to disguise themselves. Human skins to live among the populace."

Suzuka actually stopped her drinking, turning to look at the boy she began to care for deeply with wide eyes. In her mind, she imagined the people from TSAB that she met before, Lindy not as a green-haired woman, or Amy, as a brown-haired older girl respectively, but as jelly-like beings or very thin creatures. Even Farin joined in her thoughts, her imagination going wild as her eyes went swirly.

Nanoha looked confused. From her training and practices with the TSAB members on the ship, she'd gotten the impression they were just humans, right?

…Hah! But maybe that's how good their disguises were? Maybe they actually were truly like those grey-men she saw in the movies with her family once!?

Alisa imagined the TSAB members as the characters from a certain cartoon, like that black extraterrestrial alien wearing a Roman skirt and hat, shooting at people and speaking in a nasally voice and technobabble. Actually, now that she thought about it, Yuuno actually spoke like that sometimes, right!?

Said ferret was looking at Makoto with an exasperated expression, his glasses now gone, as he shook his head. Just from the blue-haired boy's expression, he could not really tell if the boy was actually joking or not.

As the silence stretched to an uncomfortable degree…

"...Wait," Suzuka managed to gather her wits enough to speak, her voice a whisper of pure disbelief. "Really?"

""He's joking/It's a joke.""

As one, both boys looked at each other in surprise. Makoto even stopped his hands to look at his friend.

The two of them actually spoke at the same time, in a synchronised moment even. They were in tune more than they realised.

Unfortunately, Alisa didn't seem to like the joke, judging from the increasing red on her face and the intense shaking of her body.

"You! You big, blue-haired Sphinx!"

A single pillow from the chair was thrown, hitting Makoto directly in the face. The cat on his head jumped, landing on the table. The boy, for the most part, was non-plussed, merely giving the pillow to the cat, who accepted it gracefully and slept on it.

Everyone was surprised that Makoto, the Makoto, the one person they imagined being a serious, calm, level-headed person, would actually even lie. Even more so for the people of the Tsukimura household, they looked like cats staring into space.

"Makoto-kun…actually told a lie?" Suzuka muttered out, a few cats rubbing on her feet trying to catch her attention to no avail. "…Has the universe reconfigured itself while we weren't looking?"

"No, Suzuka-chan, they haven't," her personal maid, Farin answered, just as shocked as her master was. Her eyes then turned a bit serious, looking at the blue-haired boy. "...Makoto-sama, was that really a joke?"

""He's joking, obviously!""

Both Yuuno and Alisa couldn't help but call out, their hands delivering a quick backhanded swing to the air. Nanoha just gave a mirthless laugh.

"Honestly, you…" The blond-haired heiress couldn't help but stare at her senior, the blue-haired boy with an expression, a mix of anger and relief. "Even your lies sound like lullabies."

Makoto did not understand why everyone was surprised. He was merely following what the other adults at TSAB said and did when they were close with their friends, like Allex and Landy.

At least, from what he heard. Perhaps he was doing it wrong? Maybe he'll ask them when they go back to the ship.

Well, that's for later. For now, it's the final steps for this music box, cleaning all the dust, putting some oil here…and done.

He let out a satisfied sigh, then immediately grimaced as he went to rub his forehead and realised his hands were still covered in machine oil. Suzuka immediately gave him a wet towel for him to wipe his hands on. He was thankful for her attention.

"You're finally finished, Makoto-kun?"

"Mm," He nodded. The others crowded near him, seeing the music box fully repaired.

It was rectangular in shape, and a plain-looking brown, lacking any designs on the boxed shell outside. It was also quite small, around half of Yuuno's ferret form, lengthwise.

Still, the fact that it was possessed by the Jewel Seed, corrupted though it may have been, means that it was important to someone, somewhere out there.

Opening the music box, the melody inside was played.

Only, it was broken.

The melody was noticeably cracked at a few notes, and the sound was sporadic in its tune.

Even so, the music heard was beautiful, incomplete as it was. Nanoha hummed it unconsciously, and the other girls and Yuuno closed their eyes, listening to the melody without lyrics. Even the cats, usually a chorus of meows and pounces, had fallen still, listening with eyes half-closed as the voiceless song wrapped around the group like a gentle, carrying breeze.

He did not know why, but Makoto could feel it, the meaning of the broken tune. A message of embracing the present, facing the uncertainties and challenges with a heart of courage and determination. A wind that blows away one's worries, and the innocence of a child. It also felt familiar for some reason…

The blue-haired boy decided to try to continue his fix, so that the song would be restored.

He wondered though, what's happening to the group at Arthra while they were gone?

[At The Same Time | Dimensional Ship Arthra, Meeting Room]

"..."

Despite the majority of the soldiers now gathering at the meeting room by Admiral Lindy's orders, not a single sound was uttered by the members.

It was not because of the result of the meeting, that was still halfway through. It was due to the videos playing on the large holographic screen floating above the meeting table.

'Aaargh!'

'No…stay away. STAY AWAY!'

'Yes, I did it-no, wait, stop! Nononono-'

Screams of terror. Eyes filled with fear. Absolute denial.

They were videos of the TSAB soldiers, their comrades, that were corrupted due to the Jewel Seed XIV, either after transporting it, or trying to reseal it, for an understanding of the situation. It wasn't just videos showing their failure though. There were a few that showed that people successfully carried or sealed the Jewel Seed into the deep, secured section of the ship, though some of them broke down after a few hours.

In fact, some of their TSAB comrades were still at the infirmary, and the rest who recovered, who attended the meeting, had deathly pale faces as they observed the scenes that occurred after they fainted.

Only some people among the group, perhaps less than a quarter, were still fine even after the ordeal, though their faces were as bitter and ashen as the rest.

Then another two videos were played, playing side-by-side. Of Makoto draining the corruption. One from the tree back at the park. The other was the crying shadow-like being wearing a sad, blue mask. At the same time, an outline drawing of Makoto's body, showing the corruption level at an estimated level of 75% was shown on the right side of the latest video.

Black lines formed on his face, and his eyes showed a glimpse of yellow tint, but other than that, the boy was fine. Too fine. It's as if the ordeal had never existed for him. Of course, the corruption level shown on the outline confirmed otherwise.

"...that concludes the report on the known effects of the corruption."

Amy's words brought a hushed discussion among everyone in the team, not that Lindy could blame them. The videos were the undeniable truth on how abnormal and beyond their current understanding Makoto was.

How strong was his will to endure such torment? Did he even feel them? Or was the pain normal for him?

She did not want to know the answer, so instead, Lindy decided to ask the representative of the researchers.

"Officer Suzuki," Said person, a ponytailed bespectacled young man, stood up straight as his name was called. "How's the progress for the draining device?"

"Unfortunately," he shook his head sadly. "Not so good. With our current resources, we can barely manage to drain even a quarter of the corruption from the provided sample before it reaches its maximum capacity. Theoretically, we could try to create multiple ones, at least four by my estimation, to drain at the same time, so that it could be contained. However…"

"...However?"

Here, Suzuki showed a deflated expression, pinching the bridge of his nose as he shook his head. "We don't have enough resources to make enough of the draining devices. Perhaps, at most, we could only make two with what we have available."

Two. Far too little to even drain it completely. Even if they try to return to Mid-Childa to gather more resources, who knows how long it will take to even gather them? And that's not including the time needed in completing it.

"...I see, thank you." The officer and scientist gave a nod, before sitting down. The others continued their discussion, thinking of the situation.

Lindy herself was having a migraine, realising how lacking they were currently, but she powered through the noise in her mind. Since the next question was very important.

"So then, ladies and gentlemen," Her two hands were held together, as she gave a sweeping look to everyone in the room. "Should our civilian collaborator, Makoto Yuuki… continue helping us?"

An uneasy silence swallowed the room. No one was opening their mouths, and most of the regular rank-and-file glanced at each other nervously, afraid of breaking the silence.

Chrono decided to break it.

"Captain," the words spoken made everyone in the room pay attention to the young Enforcer. "I believe that it would be too dangerous for him to continue assisting us."

"...And the reason?"

"It's due to his corruption level," the boy pointed out, his hands behind his back. "The value is far too high to ignore. He's likely a time bomb waiting to explode if he continues his draining activities."

A hushed silence enveloped the room, before quiet chatters and discussion rose. Chrono's words were logical. Just from the small amount of corruption, at least compared to Makoto's, some of the officers broke down completely. What would happen if the boy actually reached his limit? With the large volume of corruption inside of him?

A hand was raised, on the opposing side. It was Amy, her face determined.

"Officer Amy, do you have any words?"

"Yes, captain," she took a deep breath. "I believe he should at least continue helping us."

Another storm of whispers gathered, this time a bit louder due to Amy's words.

"Your reason?"

"...As much as I hate to say it," the girl looked like she had swallowed a bitter pill. "At the current stage, only collaborator Makoto's power is uniquely suited to handle the corrupted Jewel Seeds. We still don't have an alternative for it."

"Officer Amy," Chrono crossed his arms. "His power is different from the current magic system. An anomaly, an unknown." He shook his head. "It's too dangerous to rely on it."

"However true it may be," Amy rebuked, her stare fierce with resolve. "It's also a fact that his power is needed to solve this case."

The debate continued, with some soldiers joining in. From Lindy's point of view, they were divided into two groups: One wanting Makoto to be contained for his safety, one wanting him to join for the sake of everyone.

Neither choice was wrong. And the alternative they had found may not be enough at the current moment.

So instead, she'll compromise.

The debate was getting heated up, but Lindy's loud voice interrupted the rising concerto of emotions.

"In that case," Everyone snapped to attention at their captain's authoritative words. "For now, we should monitor him under strict conditions. Amy."

"Yes, ma'am!"

"How many times can Makoto drain before the corruption reaches maximum capacity?"

"...From what we observed, perhaps two…no, three times at most." Amy's words were uncertain, but Lindy trusted the girl's words. She did her research a lot, so her estimated accuracy was a reliable check.

"Suzuki."

"Ma'am!"

"Is it possible for the device made to drain the corruption from collaborator Makoto?"

"Huh?" The man looked at the datapad in his hand, shuffling through the data. "It…should be possible, but we haven't tested that far yet. And at most, with our current resources, we could perhaps drain… 10% total at most."

"...It's better than nothing," she muttered under her breath, before standing up and giving her commands. "For now, concentrate fully on making the devices to drain the corruption from the boy. And try to create as many of the Jewel Seed corruption detectors as you can possibly make."

"Yes, ma'am!" Suzuki spoke the words, with the other scientists and Amy joining in a wordless salute.

"Good, dismissed."

All the soldiers in the room left the meeting, their steps a disciplined, harmonious stride.

Only when the last member left, Lindy dropped her mask, her two held hands touching her forehead.

A single step forward, and a few steps backward. Lindy let out a despairing sigh, saddened that she couldn't fulfil her promise to the young Suzuka just yet.

Life was never easy, was it?

+++

[At the Same Time | Testarossa's Apartment]

"Fate, stop! You need to take a rest!"

But she couldn't. There were less than a quarter of the twenty-one Jewel Seed left that were still undetected.

The yellow-haired girl returned to the Garden of Time to report and deliver the Jewel Seeds, but her mother was in a bad mood. She did not know why, but Fate was immediately given 'love' (punishment) upon arriving.

Her mother then demanded her to gather the remaining Seeds, not even accepting the ones she had in her hand.

Fate did not understand. Did she do something wrong? Is that why her mother was angry at her?

…Yes, that should be the case. It was her fault. If she gathered all the Jewel Seeds, then her mother would smile again, and everything would return to how it used to be.

That was why, upon arriving, she tried to detect and find the Jewel Seeds in the city as much as possible, despite the pain from her mother's love.

But she couldn't detect whether they existed, so she tried harder. Maybe they were cloaked. Or maybe something.

…There were no results found. As far as she knows, there were no Jewel Seeds left in the city.

"Ugh," she fell down to her knees, the pain being too much for her. Arf, her loyal familiar, immediately scooped her up and carried her to their apartment, wrapping bandages and applying ointment to her wounds.

"Really, that woman…!" Arf, in her human form, growled, angry that her master had been hurt. "If she really wants the Jewel Seeds herself, then she should do it herself!"

The words were punctuated with her fist slamming on the floor.

"Arf, stop," Fate gently chastised her. "You know mother is too sick to do it herself. She said she has something more important to do."

"But hurting you who follow her request without complaints!?"

"...It's my fault. I made a mistake," A hollow, sombre tone. "That's why, if we gather all the Jewel Seeds, mother would be happy again."

"Fate…" Arf merely stared at her pained, lonely master, who nonetheless did what was requested of her. Her hands clenched tightly, gritting her teeth in anger on how her master's mother treated her.

Still… Fate was looking at the outside view, where vehicles and people come and go under the night sky. If there's no more Jewel Seed detected in this city, where could they be?

She spotted the large body of water at the coast, and her eyes widened in realisation.

If there was no longer any in the city, yet still close by, then there was only one possible place.

Her eyes fixed on the vast, dark expanse beyond the city lights.

The ocean.

[End of Arc 3: Echoes of A Broken Song | To Be Continued]

Chapter 22 (Start of Arc 4) New
Chapter 22: Their Choice

[1st May, Evening | Arthra Training Room]

"Hm!"

A single blink from Chrono. A single thrum from a string was heard, and Makoto's form was but a blur. He moved in the interval between heartbeats, resolving behind the Enforcer, his lyre already arcing in a home-run swing.

But Chrono was already prepared. A blue magic circle suddenly appeared below him, and chains of light shot out from it, trying to tie the white-haired boy during the swing.

Makoto expected it though. The swing already stopped halfway, and he immediately took a step back to avoid the bind.

Another magic circle under Chrono, before five small spheres materialised and shot forward. They were weak, and little more than an annoyance and distraction to the current Unison Makoto.

Both knew it. Makoto knew Chrono had a trap primed for a direct assault. Chrono knew Makoto would likely charge anyway.

And he did, using the Flash Move-like spell he learned recently to once again close in on the older boy, a single thrum accompanying his movement. He knew that, the moment he gave the slightest opening, Chrono would capitalise on it like a hawk.

Indeed, when the white-haired boy was immediately face-to-face against the Enforcer, Chrono could not hide his expression of surprise, and Makoto knew he had it, the lyre already swung for victory.

That was a mistake.

A large light-blue magic circle appeared in front of the Enforcer's outstretched palm, blocking the attack with incredible efficiency, though it did crack for a moment. Immediately afterwards, light blue chains bound Makoto, locking him on the spot.

Chrono was already behind him, his staff poking the back of his neck. "Checkmate."

"...Indeed." Makoto let out a sigh, accepting his loss. It was his third loss in a row.

Both boys landed on the floor, their feet letting out a soft tap, Makoto's white hair reverting back to its blue hue. The rest of the soldiers, plus Nanoha, let out a breath they didn't realise they were even holding.

The mock battle was over.

+++

"...Definitely strong, the two of them."

Those were the words Makoto muttered as he looked at both Nanoha and Chrono, who was now in mock combat, his mind remembering earlier events.

It was the day after their day off was given. Nanoha, Yuuno and Makoto returned to Arthra to continue to look for the Jewel Seeds, though the latter did wonder why some of the adults looked at him with a mix of guilt and resignation.

Anyway, one would think that locating the Jewel Seeds now that they were so few in number would be easy, especially since they had advanced technology on their side.

But it wasn't.

While locating the Jewel Seeds was possible in theory, Yuuno explained to him that, unless the Seeds themselves activated and manifested, it was nearly impossible to detect them even when they were close by. It was akin to finding a muted melody in a storm of noises.

The one caveat was that, if they themselves had not found them, then neither had Fate.

Still, since searching for an unactivated Jewel Seed themselves might take a long while, the captain, Lindy, recommended the trio get some rest, to prepare for the next operation.

Nanoha decided to continue her mock combat training, this time against multiple TSAB officers at the same time.

Makoto chose to ask for advice from Yuuno, who was in the library, as the boy was both his and Nanoha's teacher when it came to learning magic. He felt like he needed a new option other than his defence spell and the binding spell, so he asked his friend for his opinion on the matter.

"Hm…how about something similar to Fate's high speed movement?" Yuuno pointed out, his hand stopping the writing of the journal in front of him that was documenting Makoto's power.

Fate's movements. Makoto understood what Yuuno meant. Her movements were a blitz, moving at a speed beyond physical limits, a prestissimo. Moving at that speed would also allow him to reach his target quickly.

Only, there was one problem. He only saw Fate engaging in combat once, during Nanoha's first loss against the opposing magical girl. He had heard from the others that during the tree monster incident where Chrono intervened, Nanoha and Yuuno fought against Fate again, but he was too busy draining to even notice at that time.

Yuuno then suggested something surprising: learning from Nanoha. The girl disliked losing, and in preparation for their next encounter with Fate, she already developed her own magic to match the other girl's speed.

Flash Move—a spell allowing a single burst of rapid movement. Enough to keep pace with Fate. The one she used back at the Chariot Incident. Right now, she's currently using to close in on her sparring partners within a single blink, though she nearly crashed into a wall, prevented by Raising Heart's timely barrier creation.

…Guess Nanoha really wanted to talk to Fate, Makoto thought.

His junior was currently taking a break, reviewing her mock battle with a look of concentration, before noticing him.

+++

[Nanoha POV | Few hours ago]

"Oh, Makoto-senpai? What are you doing here?"

She tilted her head at his appearance. As far as she knew, Makoto infrequently went towards the training area. Not because of laziness or being averse to combat, but he was more of a pacifist in nature. He rarely focused on combat, only draining the corruption from the Jewel Seeds.

For him to be here meant that…

"...Did something happen?"

To her relief, her senior shook his head. "No, nothing." His voice was calm, his eyes glimpsing at the display she was looking at before looking at her directly. "I was talking with Yuuno earlier, and he recommended that I talk to you about the problem I'm currently having."

"Fueh?"

Makoto explained about his need for a quick, instantaneous movement; something similar to Fate in other words. While watching from the videos taken would be one option, he felt like learning from someone directly would be far more helpful. And since Nanoha was learning her Flash Move, Yuuno felt like she was the best person to request such a thing.

For Nanoha, she was happy, even humming a tune. Not just because Yuuno believed her to be good enough to teach someone, but because Makoto, her senior who normally did things alone, actually asked for help.

Of course, just knowing the spell, and teaching it to someone were two different things. She remembered how when she asked her older sister about something she didn't understand, she explained in some abstract words whose meaning flew above her head sometimes. It took her brother or her parents taking over that she understood.

Unlike her sister though, she had her partner for help. As such, she asked.

"Raising Heart, can you help too?"

[Alright.]

Makoto-senpai asked for help, so she'll give it her all!

+++

[Present]

Nanoha was really fired up when she heeded his request. Makoto could somehow see the girl burning in spirit. Though she deflated quickly when he learned it after being taught the spell twice.

Or rather, his variation of it. While Nanoha's version used the wings on her Flier Fin Spell to immediately move at a speed beyond the naked eye, he had his eyes glowing in blue, or at least, that's what Nanoha said.

His speed was the same as Flash Move. Something that could be mistaken as instantaneous, though he strangely did not feel any air resistance in his body for moving that quickly. The only main difference, other than his glowing eyes, was that his version contained a simple chiming sound when he began his acceleration.

It was after mastering the spell's basics that Chrono of all people challenged him to a best-of-three mock battle. Officially, it was to let Makoto practice his new move and for Chrono to gauge his combat style.

Makoto did not mind it. He was also curious on how strong Chrono actually was, since there was a lack of battle when the two of them were retrieving Jewel Seed XIX. As such he agreed.

…The result was a defeat. Three straight losses in a row.

He had to admit, Chrono was strong. Really strong. He also had more experience in combat, compared to Makoto himself, who rarely fought, usually choosing to defend or support when not draining.

That did not mean he was upset about losing, however. Far from it.

Makoto learned a few tricks from their mock battle. Mainly about the mindset for battle, and using one's options flexibly.

If Nanoha's was a straightforward tune, then Chrono's was tricky, changing volume, continuously aiming for the correct beat. His shots were more control focused, yet speedy in their delivery. Low in power, but unmatched technique, at least from Makoto's own point of view.

It was also pretty nice of Chrono to teach him a few things. On what he was lacking, or when he overextended or chose a wrong action. Like when he charged forward, catching Chrono by surprise in the last battle, Makoto only decided to deliver his swing, thinking that it was his victory.

But his opponent already prepared the binding spell in advance, only taken by surprise due to the sheer speed of Makoto's movement, delaying the trigger. So Chrono decided to create enough time for Makoto to stop moving, at least for half-a-second. Makoto's own straightforward action cost him the victory.

Still, it did allow him to understand his current strength, so now he'll try to find a suitable style of combat.

Right now though, he was sitting on a bench, currently resting from the battles he experienced in the past hour. Nanoha was now in mock combat against Chrono, their staff colliding with each other before both put some distance between them. Ah, she got bound by the older boy's magic trap before she even realised it, like him…

"Makoto-kun, sorry to interrupt."

"Hm?"

He turned his head to the side, seeing a holographic screen floating near him. It was Amy.

"The captain wishes to see you. Do you mind heading to her office? It's near the meeting room you went to last time."

"Understood."

Giving a last glance at the battle between Chrono and Nanoha, he walked towards the office, his feet moving at a constant tune. There were some mages he passed on the way, greeting back to those who called out to him, and pointing him to the direction of the office when he asked.

A few flinched when seeing his face, and he realised why after seeing his reflection on a polished surface.

On one side of his face, the one normally covered by his hair, he could barely see a few vertical black lines starting from the bottom eyelid, slowly decreasing lengthwise from the bottom. He could also see his eye having a shade of yellow.

He ignored it, instead focusing on his walk towards his destination, the sound of multiple hums echoing in different locations inside the hallway, with a single scream vibrating beyond.

Just the usual.

"-Click- ...And done."

Lindy wiped the sweat from her forehead, resting her back against the chair, her fingers numb from her typing.

In front of her was a screen, showing Makoto's profile that she had written. Not just from her own observation, but also from other TSAB members on the ship, mainly his personality and his powers.

She could ask Amy or the others to make it, but she didn't. Lindy felt it was her duty to make it, as one of the adults forced to rely on a child to bear a burden they themselves could not.

That did not mean that she added his profile to the database immediately though.

Lindy made sure that the profile was locked behind a maximum-level security, so that it would be accessible to only members of her ship and the higher echelons of TSAB back at Mid-Childa. It was the least she could do.

Makoto's magic was unique. Undeniably so. Quite a number of people would be scared by something they did not understand immediately, but what she feared more were those who were both curious about it and malicious in their thoughts.

She could already imagine some members of the TSAB would try to obtain Makoto's power for their own purpose, and with the boy's kindness, it was unlikely for him to say no if people were sincere about it. Or perhaps even worse.

Lindy wasn't naive enough to believe everyone in the TSAB were kind people without an agenda.

-Knock-Knock-

"Captain, this is Makoto. You wanted to see me?"

Hearing his words, the green-haired woman couldn't help but let out an amused smile. Even though he did not have to, mainly due to him not actually being a member of TSAB, he still chose to call Lindy that, all because that's how the others called her.

"Y-yes, Makoto-kun," she managed to stifle her laughter, just barely. Her hands operated on the console nearby, removing the lock of the entrance door. "You may enter."

A hydraulic hiss was heard, and the door slid itself to the side. Makoto, his face the same as she saw him the first time, walked inside at a rhythmic pace, saluting when he was a few steps away from the table.

Her mouth twitched.

+++

[Few minutes later]

"...And then Chrono managed to get the drop on me, binding me when I let my guard down."

Makoto shook his head, disappointed with his carelessness.

Lindy had called Makoto here, not for anything really important, merely wanting to have a simple chat about the boy's training. It was during her work, and she saw him and her son in a mock battle, with a few people who passed the room staying there and watching, their mouths agape.

She didn't blame them. Despite Makoto losing three times in a row, thinking that Chrono outmanoeuvred him, the truth was quite different.

In her personal opinion, despite the difference in experience between the two boys, the battles were close, incredibly so. Especially in the third battle, where Makoto chose to close in with his move. Chrono had no choice but to forcefully trigger his delayed binding spell just to give himself some time and space.

The reason Chrono won was mainly due to his long and honed experience in battles, particularly against rogue mages. And even then, Makoto grew at an astonishing pace in just under a month after knowing magic.

And she told him that, but the blue-haired boy didn't seem to be annoyed by his loss, merely accepting his loss as a matter of fact.

Still, since he was here now, she could tell him about a few things that happened during the break.

"Thank you for humouring my question, Makoto-kun." She held her hands together, her face now masked in her captain's expression. "On another note, there's a few things I need to tell you."

Makoto tilted his head in confusion at her serious words.

Lindy began her explanation. First off, after hearing Makoto's words about the tarot card drawings inside the Jewel Seeds, Amy managed to complete a detector specialised in knowing the Arcana detected inside them, and if they were corrupted or not. Since they now know that most of the manifestations of the current Jewel Seeds were related to their tarot card meaning, they could prepare for it.

Currently, it's only installed inside Arthra, but Lindy also mentioned that Raising Heart was outfitted with the same system, so at the very least, Nanoha could check if the Jewel Seed was corrupted or not.

Secondly, the prototype devices used to drain the corruption were finally completed, though for the corrupted Jewel Seed to be completely drained, they required four devices, and they only managed to make two with what they currently have. And creating a separate space and device for the corruption to be stored was dangerous by itself. They still didn't understand what it was.

So instead, they focused on draining the corruption from Makoto instead.

"...Me?" Makoto pointed his finger at himself, confused at the decision.

"Yes, Makoto-kun, you." Lindy gave him a saddened look. Just looking at his reaction, she could tell he didn't even realise his own self-worth. It was likely that he believed, as long as people were fine, he himself could bear that pain and darkness.

But that was wrong. He was important; to Suzuka, to Nanoha and Yuuno, and to the people he bonded with in the past few days. Sacrificing the few to save the many should never be chosen as the first resort.

However, she herself knew that telling him that won't actually change his mind. Even without knowing him long, she knew he was likely as stubborn as Clyde when it came to saving people.

So instead, she changed the topic to something she was mildly curious about.

"Makoto-kun, if I may ask, how were the 'Shadows', the enemies you have fought before, and their level of corruption? Especially Nanoha-chan?"

Previously, when they chatted about what happened until now, it was mostly straightforward and knowing what was needed. The details weren't that important early on.

However, now that they have more details on it, she wondered if there were any difference between the level of corruption from each victim. Only Makoto, who could hear the sound it emitted, and the person who drained the darkness from them, could actually tell how corrupted they actually were.

Incidentally, the 'Shadows' were the masked monsters, not actually their names, but what most members of her crew called them. That included the manifestations of the corrupted Jewel Seeds and their underlings, or whatever the creatures that were created during the Jewel Seed VII incident. Amy wanted to call them Psytoms, but she's of the minority.

"Those Shadows?" Makoto crossed his arms, deep in thought, trying to find the proper words to express the melody. Eventually, he nodded. "If I have to say it…Among the victims, Nanoha was certainly the strongest one we have fought against."

"However," he continued. "If it was in terms of corruption level, then she's actually not that bad."

"Oh?" Lindy raised her eyebrows, her eyes widened at his words. She thought that Nanoha was actually one of the worst ones.

"Hm," Makoto nodded, as if realising a fact he just missed. "If anything, among those that Nanoha, Yuuno and I faced, the paperwork monster, during the early days that I joined, was actually the worst. I remember that one had a full mask on its face compared to Nanoha's half mask, or even Suzuka's now that I think about it. It gave me quite a headache, with how heavy the emotions I felt at that time."

He could never forget it, even if the feelings did not surface themselves from time to time in his dreams. The rage, the helplessness, the fanatical belief…

"Interesting…"

It really was. Most of them thought that all the corruption levels would cause the same result, with the only difference between the Arcana and the victim's desires.

But from what Makoto explained, the corruption affecting the victims actually had stages in them, depending on the state of their mask. And there was a high chance that it depended on the mental state of said people.

If that's the case, was the reason Nanoha's was actually half masked was because she was actively resisting it, despite being overwhelmed? The victim that created the paperwork monster perhaps was in a state of despair, their heart heavy due to all the work inside the office they had to do.

…She could understand it a bit, as an adult.

"Also…" Makoto looked to the side, surprisingly hesitant. As if unsure of something. "Those 'Shadows', or Psytoms as Amy-san calls it...Not the ones made from the victims. But the ones against the Chariot… The ones that appeared when I was saving Suzuka… They felt strange…"

"How so?"

"It's like…" The words escaped his mouth before he even realised it. "...They felt like people. Yet missing something important."

Before Lindy could understand his words…

-BWEEP!-BWEEP!-

…A high-pitched alarm sound was heard.

At the table, a large holographic screen immediately formed. Amy's face was seen, her expression serious yet frantic.

"Captain, this is Amy speaking," She began, her voice severe in its tune. "We managed to find Fate, and the rest of the Jewel Seeds."

[Fate's Side | Above the ocean]

"...Haa…Haa… Found them…"

Raging seas. Heavy rain. Dangerous wind.

Lightning arced above the skies. Thunder echoed at a dangerous interval.

When Fate realised the last of the Jewel Seeds were located under the sea, she knew the problem immediately. Despite being a mage, underwater combat was something she had never been taught, as the event of it happening was almost minuscule. Diving down to search for it was dangerous, especially since they didn't know where to find them.

So instead, Fate chose to activate them.

Rather than futilely searching for them while they were still inert, not knowing where they were, it's far more efficient to trigger them so that they could be located all at once.

In theory, it was not wrong.

However, it was extremely costly. To cast a large area spell to just locate and activate the Lost Logia, and to seal them with her remaining strength…

Arf knew, even with Fate's magical skill, the course of action would definitely push Fate beyond her limits, especially since she hadn't recovered fully yet.

"Gh…!"

"Fate!"

Her master failed again to seal a Jewel Seed, the one feeling wrong to her among the four, static crackling along her Barrier Jacket. The Jewel Seeds were inside the tornadoes made by pure magical power, with the largest one containing the one that felt distorted to her senses.

Arf did not know why Fate even chose to try and seal it first when she saw it, the Jewel Seed XI. If anything, she should have conserved her strength to try and seal the others first.

"I'm…alright."

That was a lie. Both of them knew it.

Fate stood on top of her yellow magic circle, her body drenched in both sweat and rain. She was breathing heavily, and her hands holding her trusted device, Bardiche, were subtly shaking.

For a single moment, the magic circle cracked, a spiderweb of jagged black lines forming from the centre, with a sickly yellow light emitting from the cracks. The black barrier jacket's colour eroded, and the form changed to a blue dress. Half of her face was covered in a mask, one of pure sadness, and her red eyes turned to a shade of phosphorescent yellow.

Then the moment was gone, and she was back to normal.

And yet, it was seen. By Arf.

The familiar vowed. No matter who came, or what's going to happen, she'll protect Fate.

[Arthra]

"That girl is so reckless, it's outrageous!"

Despite her words, Makoto could see her look of worry adorning Lindy's face.

All of them were looking at what Fate was currently doing on the ship from the large screen above. Nanoha was beside him, looking at the scene with an increasing mix of fear and worry.

Even from his own point of view, it was dangerous, impulsive even, an unexpected moment coming from the girl with the sad melody. For him, it felt like she was cornered and had no way out.

"...Confirm." Amy finished typing from her console. "Jewel Seed I, VIII, IX and XI located. With XI - Strength, being corrupted."

He knew that. Even from beyond the screen, he still could hear it. That unpleasant scream that vibrated his entire body.

He could see Nanoha was looking at her in worry, her hand above her heart clenched tight. Especially since she recklessly tried to seal the corrupted Jewel Seed again and again.

Despite how tired she looked. Despite her wobbling form, and Bardiche's energy scythe fizzling out. Despite the environment itself causing her trouble. What was pushing her forward?

Then Chrono said something.

"If we leave her long enough, she'll tire herself down to exhaustion. Even if she doesn't, we can make our move when she's too weak to resist."

A cold calculation. A brutal efficiency.

Nanoha had her eyes widened to the limit, as if she couldn't believe what she was hearing.

"Now that we've found the last of them, we can't afford to lose them now." Lindy's words were blunt, unlike what she had heard before. "It may be cruel, but this is the reality."

The fact that Lindy herself agreed with Chrono's course of action made her heart feel weak and in despair, a sorrowful melody screaming in her mind.

Makoto understood the TSAB decision.

Despite everything, their initial task was never to capture Fate. Instead, it was to collect the Lost Logia and minimise their impact to the non-administered world, Earth. Especially since even one of the Jewel Seeds could cause dimensional instability.

And the fact Fate herself was collecting something so dangerous sneakily, with only one support meant that it was unethical. Something dangerous was happening in the background. Something that their group hadn't noticed.

And it was highly likely that they were also wary of Fate, not because of what she was doing, but of how strong she was despite her age. The adults he talked to expressed it clearly when asked, and they themselves admitted they were no match for her in a straight fight.

That's why they chose not to dispatch yet. An opponent that could only be handled by their strongest member Chrono, and the fact the Jewel Seed themselves were corrupted and they couldn't handle it yet…

He knew that a cornered animal was dangerous. He could already imagine how Fate would react, especially seeing her recklessness right now.

That's why they chose to let Fate alone, and let her fall. They were thinking of the aftermath, of the threats of the Lost Logia. It was their responsibility.

However, just because he understood their choice, it didn't mean that he would accept it.

Makoto took a deep breath in his mind, and connected his thoughts to Nanoha by telepathy.

'You should go, Nanoha.' 'Go, Nanoha.'

Looks like Yuuno had the same idea.

He could hear the slight quiet footsteps behind the two of them. Both of them turned, and saw Yuuno smiling at them.

'Makoto-senpai? Yuuno-kun?'

'I'll open the gate for you, so go after her. I'll follow later. You'll join us too, right, Makoto?'

'Of course.'

'But, both of you…'
Nanoha's voice was filled with worry, and she had a saddened expression. 'The reason I want to talk to her… To Fate-chan… I…'

'It matters not the reason,'
Yuuno's eyes softened. 'If you were in trouble, I'll be your strength. Just like you were for me.'

'Indeed,'
Makoto nodded, looking at her. 'Just follow your heart. You want to help her right? That's all you need.'

"Yuuno-kun… Makoto-senpai…"

She was happy, her heart once again beating in a harmonious melody. How could she not? Even after everything, even when the adults chose to stand by, her friends, her dearest friends, chose to allow her selfishness, even following her.

That's why, as she and Makoto went towards the teleporter, passing by Yuuno who was preparing for the spell to transfer them, how could she not have a wide smile on her face?

The stirring from the teleport, the magic used, was sensed by everyone in the room. Chrono glared at the two of them, while Lindy turned to look behind her in surprise.

"I'm sorry," Nanoha declared. "Takamachi Nanoha is ignoring orders and taking selfish action!"

Makoto bowed in apology. "Forgive us captain. Everyone. I'm joining her. To help that girl."

Because they chose to. They cannot leave her alone.

And that was enough.

"Sending both of you towards that girl's barrier!"

A single flash of light, and the two of them were gone. Yuuno joined in a few moments later.

"Those idiots!"

Chrono growled, almost striking a wall. The others were panicked, surprised by the blatant disregard of order.

Lindy…sighed, knowing deep in her heart that it would have happened sooner or later, after knowing the kids. It was why she didn't order or try sealing the teleporter.

[Above the ocean]

"...!?" "Enemies!?"

Fate and Arf could sense them. Three people above the skies, floating downwards from the clouds. Familiar ones even.

The girl Takamachi Nanoha, in her white Barrier Jacket.

The white-haired boy with the calming melody, the one that brought her peace.

The other boy, the one with a strong barrier, the one called Yuuno.

Why… were they here?

"Don't you dare…" Arf growled, already moving to them, her claws sharp. "GET IN FATE'S WAY!"

A single tune, and Yuuno made a large green circle in front of her, forcing her to stop. It did not do anything else.

"You're wrong! We're not here to fight you!"

"Yuuno-kun!"

Makoto did not listen to his friend's words. He was already moving towards the corrupted Jewel Seed, his hand on his lyre, passing by Fate.

Two blue magic circles appeared beside the tornado, and white strings of light were shot, tying it down on the spot, preventing it from moving.

His own hands produced multiple strings, supported the bind, and he began draining it.

"...You…"

Makoto did not listen to her words, only focusing on the act itself.

It did not take long for it to finish, and he immediately held it in his hand.

"That Jewel-" "Here you go." "-Seed…eh?"

There was no hesitation from the boy. His palm was open, and he was offering it to her without a thought.

"...Why…?"

"You need it, right?"

A simple question. A simple answer.

Yet, not a single doubt in his voice.

She didn't understand. She did not understand.

Her shaking hand slowly extended towards the Jewel Seed, as if afraid that he would remove it from sight if she rushed forward.

Nothing happened. Her fingers brushed against his palm, holding it steady.

[Sealing.]

Her partner, Bardiche, acted without her consent, sealing and absorbing the Jewel Seed with surprising ease.

That boy did not act. He did not even look at her with suspicion. He just…let her take it. With a smile on his face.

"Fate-chan!" the other girl, Nanoha, closed in on them. "Let's help each other and stop those Jewel Seeds!"

Her staff's jewel glowed, and a pink ribbon of light trailed towards Bardiche's jewel. A pink sphere covered the three of them, and she could feel her strength, her mana returning.

[Power Charge.] A blue glow for Bardiche.

[Supplying Complete.] A pink glow from the other Intelligent Device.

…Why? Why were they… so kind?

"We'll each take care of the rest."

"And three of us will support both of you."

Mana chains, of orange and green, accompanied by strings of light held the other Jewel Seeds in place.

Fate could only look at them with wonder. For once, she felt warm.

"On the count of three, we'll seal them together, alright, Fate-chan?"

Nanoha already left to go ahead to find the perfect spot, already believing that she will follow in the request.

The other boy was still nearby, his expression was of utmost concentration, trying to keep the damage down. His unguarded back was in front of her, trusting her completely.

Fate was confused. She did not know what to do. Should she… trust them? Were they truly not enemies?

…Her heart knew the truth, but she was afraid.

Her partner knew that. That's why it chose to act.

[Sealing Mode. Set Up.]

"Bardiche…"

She couldn't help but look at her device. Her partner. Linith's last gift before she was gone.

Right, if she could not trust her own choice, she could at least trust her partner, right?

"Divine Buster…Full Power." Nanoha pointed her staff, transformed into its shooting form. The pink circle below her expanded into a massive size "You can do it, right? Raising Heart?"

[All right, my master.]

Fate also prepared herself, getting ready for the sealing.

But first, she needed to know. Not the whys. Not what.

"Um…"

"Hm?"

But who's.

"...W-what's your name?"

…Her tongue got tied the moment she asked. She blushed in mortification.

The boy…blinked. Then he smiled, a mix of apology and amusement. Not at her. At himself. "Right, I never told you my name. And you never heard it from the others."

It was a reversal. From when they met in the rain. When she first defeated that girl.

"My name…"

Back then, he asked for her name, and she answered, despite everything.

"...is Yuuki Makoto." He paused, the rain between them a curtain of silver threads. "Nice to meet you, Fate."

Now, she asked for his, in this rain. And he answered.

Somehow, she could feel the world pausing in a single moment, and a bent, distorted melody was now straightened, playing a song for the wind that blew away her uncertainty.

Why did she feel that for a second…? No, no matter.

She nodded, trying to take some distance from the boy, Makoto, preparing herself.

"…Hm, hold on."

His words cause her to stop for a bit, looking at him in confusion.

Despite his hands being occupied, one holding the lyre as a conductor and the other hovering above it to hold the spell, he used his thumb to strum the strings, playing a pure tune.

Fate suddenly felt more refreshed, as if the tiredness she felt earlier was but a lie she believed. She could feel herself being enveloped by a gentle song, a sacred, peaceful melody.

"It's not much, but you should feel a bit better now."

"…Thank you." With those words and a small nod, she was now moving away, readying her spell.

Somehow, her heart was clear.

+++

A yellow magic circle appeared below Fate, and she prepared her spell. Blue sparks crackled.

At the same time, large pink energies gathered at the tip of the other girl's staff. Raising Heart.

Makoto could feel it, the rising form of harmonious energy gathering from the two of them.

"Both of you ready?" He did not see them, but he still could feel their nod. Huh. Another time.

"On the count of three. One!"

"Two!" Nanoha's.

"...Three!" Fate pointed her staff down. "Thunder…!

"Divine…!"

"Rage!"

"Buster!"

Lightning rained down, striking the three tornadoes with incredible precision, trapping and holding it with Fate's own strength.

At the same time, a large pink beam of light moved at an incredible force, swallowing the three tornadoes at the same time.

The sheer power was overwhelming. He could feel the force almost pushing him and the others away.

It was an overwhelming and precise might, a combination of the two magical girls now working together. The three Jewel Seeds were sealed…

…Or at least, that should have been the case.

"""""....!?"""""

Something was wrong. Everyone could feel it. From everyone trying to seal the Jewel Seeds. From the people watching at Arthra.

Jewel Seed I and IX were successfully sealed.

The sealing of Jewel Seed VIII failed.

It was not because the girls were weak. It was not because the others failed to hold it down.

Because somehow, without anyone realising it…It became corrupted.

'This is… It got corrupted!?'

Amy's voice echoed towards everyone on the battlefield, and even Raising Heart was shouting out corruption warnings.

Yuuno felt the Sigil in his hand burning at the sudden change, but his eyes were wide in disbelief. "That's impossible…It can actually hide its own corruption until now!? Actually hiding it from Makoto's own senses!?"

"No, it didn't hide it, Yuuno."

Makoto's words made everyone look at him in surprise.

It was indeed impossible to hide it from him, the screaming. The detector itself did not find it until now. And Nanoha's case was unique because she had a medium for it to hide it until it showed itself. Her own body.

This Jewel Seed did not. The only medium it had was the pillar of water, and he was completely sure it was still uncorrupted.

The question then was asked, where did the sudden corruption come from?

There was only one answer. "Something corrupted it midway. An outside source."

"...! Multiple enemies detected!"

Shadowy forms suddenly appeared from thin air, as if melting themselves into existence. There were ten of them; five of which being knights in armour holding a lance in one hand, while sitting astride floating horse armour, their purple mask, with the black numeral IV attached, hovering where the front of their face would be.

The other five were black ravens, holding a lantern in their talons, with an orange mask, with the black numeral IX, seen on their breast.

Makoto could not help but sigh. Guess it won't be that easy.
