A/N: Special Thanks to Greatkingrat88 for the beta-ing the chapter and his suggestions on areas in need of improvements and touch ups.
At the suggestion of my beta, as fun as tormenting Lelouch with training can be, it's getting old so after this chapter we're skipping six years to something those I've spoken to on space battles and the fourm for this story I've been eager to do.
Anyway enjoy.
A month had passed since Lelouch and Dainsleif had first come to Narukami Island, but all things had to come to an end. During his stay he had trained hard, and befriended many of the people on Watatsumi. Especially Kokomi; as they became closer as friends, she was perhaps his new best friend since Suzaku. Now they were on a ship headed to the island that would be their new home until everything in Fontaine was ready for them. After docking, C.C, Dainsleif, Siegfried- who carried Nunnally- and Lelouch were walking a trail that would lead them to their destination on the northeastern side of the island.
I have to say, Narukami Island is larger than I expected, Lelouch thought.
C.C. had chosen a new outfit for the occasion: black shorts, black boots, a white coat over a dark shirt, and long fingerless gloves with armor plates on the forearms. At her hip rested a weapons belt, carrying a short sword in its sheath. Across her back hung holsters for two muskets, designed to fire air bullets, using her Ameno element. Hanging from her belt was a fake Amemo Vision, with the Fontaine-style frame around it.
As the group walked through Chinju Forest, a wooden area with a serene ambience to it, located near the foot on one side of the island's tallest mountain. As they entered, day seemed to turn into night, an unseen moon providing a strange, ambient light.
"What is this place?" Lelouch said, furrowing his brows. It seemed… unnatural.
"Don't worry. This is normal for Chinju Forest," Dainsleif said reassuringly.
"A forest where day becomes night is normal?" Lelouch asked skeptically.
"I don't know how or why, but there are some legends and myths. Most importantly, it is perfectly safe to travel this forest. Many travelers have passed it on their way to the Grand Narukami Shrine," Dainsleif explained. Lelouch still looked around him nervously. Their story about the forest's unusual nature didn't do much to put him at ease. However, something in the distance drew his attention. He saw what appeared to be a tanuki, dancing on its hind legs. Lelouch paused, rubbing his eyes to check if he was seeing things, but when he looked again the tanuki was gone.
"What is it?" C.C. asked.
"I thought I saw something." Lelouch said hesitantly.
"Jumping at shadows, are we?" C.C. teased.
"No, I am really sure I saw something in the distance," Lelouch insisted.
"Let's keep moving," Dainsleif said firmly.
"...fine," Lelouch muttered. Still uncertain, he followed the group along. He had left Watatsumi Island and most importantly Kokomi behind. It was a different feeling to when he left Japan and his world. There had not been much tying him to his past, only pain and suffering left behind. But the people of Watatsumi had been kind to him. Making friends with the hair apparent had left an impression. He had never had a friend who had shared his interest in military history, in tactics and strategy.
And just as Kokomi had learned a lot from him, Lelouch in turn had learned much about warfare in Teyvat, at least from Inazuma's corner of the world. He still wondered what warfare and tactics of the other nations were like; even the Nation of War known as Natlan intrigued him. Wrapped up in such sentimental thought, his sadness at moving on from Watatsumi Island left him aching.
I know I could visit, but…
Lelouch was silent for the rest of the journey to their destination, trying to process and deal with his thoughts. But Nunnally had some questions.
"So, who are these people we are going to again?"
"You'll be staying with the Kamisato Clan. They are one of the three great clans that leads one of the three branches of Inazuma's government, known as the Tri-Commission. The Kamisato Clan are the leaders of the Yashiro Commission, the branch of Inazuma's government that handles most public events, such as the oversight and organization of festivals, ceremonies. That includes all of Inazuma's religious affairs too," Dainsleif explained.
"So they handle all public relations. Do they handle the businesses too?"
"That would be the Kanjou Commission, which handles customs, border security and oversees Inazuma's economy. Currently they are being led by the Hiiragi Clan, who live atop a hill in the port town of Ritou," Dainsleif replied, raising an eyebrow at Nunnally subtly, realizing that she hadn't been paying attention in their lessons and discussion about Inazuma. The way the girl shifted on Siegfried's back indicated that she recognized this as well, much to her embarrassment.
"Since we're on the subject- Lelouch, can you tell me what the last commission is and which clan leads it?" Siegfried asked, hoping to spare Nunnally from any possible scrutiny.
"Oh, um," Lelouch said, shaken from his reveries. "Uhhh… that would be the Tenryou Commission, right? The largest of the three commissions, and Inazuma's military arm that includes the police force. The current clan leading it is…" he paused, thinking hard. "The… Kujou Clan?"
"Good lad! Glad to know someone was paying attention," Dainsleif said, playfully teasing Nunnally, causing her cheeks to redden in further embarrassment.
"One thing you didn't mention was why this family and not any of the other clans," Lelouch said, coming to his sister's rescue.
"I suppose I didn't," Dainsleif replied with a smile. "Aside from its duties to the public, the Kamisato clan also commands the Shuumatsuban, a ninja corps that is effectively Inazuma's intelligence agency. They handle espionage, reconnaissance, and other clandestine operations that ensure the safety of Inazuma by dealing with any potential threats behind the scenes. I recall your world has ninjas as well, so I think you should understand the rest of what that entails."
"Right. Japanese shinobi did pretty much the same kind of thing. So they are very similar then?"
"Yes. Some do have Visions that can enhance their combat abilities, their other skills of their trade, or both. In fact, we are being quietly observed by them right now. Ever since what happened on Inazuma with the Abyss Order, they've kept an eye on you two," Dainsleif admitted.
Lelouch was shocked. "They were watching all this time? I never noticed."
"They wouldn't be very good at their jobs if you'd spotted them," Siegfried said dryly.
"That explains your relationship with them. You share useful intelligence on the Abyss Order with them and in turn they share anything of use to you, don't you?"
Dainsleif smiled, pleased Lelouch caught on quickly. "That is right. My own contacts have also been useful to them in other ways, so it's been a mutually beneficial relationship."
"That explains a few things. How much does the clan know?" Lelouch asked, lightly worried about being eavesdropped on.
"They know what they need to know. Their leadership is aware about you and your sister's true backgrounds. If you recall, they were the ones I enlisted to forge and prepare the false backgrounds of you and your sister, you being children of parents from Fontaine, whose parents died in a mining accident on one of the islands. Only those who were necessary to help craft that background and everything with it are in the know," Dainsleif replied reassuringly.
"Right. And I suppose our new outfits match our background," Lelouch remarked, looking at himself.
Since they were going to be meeting the head of one of Inazuma's most notable clans, it had been decided for Nunnally and Lelouch to dress accordingly. He now wore a black jacket, a white shirt, simple matching pants, black boots, black fingerless gloves and and his fake Electro Vision fastened to a belt. Nunnally wore a pink and red dress, similar in design, with white tights and pink boots along with a new matching bow on her head. Her Vision hung from a pink sash around her belt.
It took an hour to clear the forest and almost a half-hour more to get to the Kamisato Estate, a mansion complex with a tall wall surrounding the estate, and some trees dotting the area around it that sat upon a cliff at the foot of Mount Yougou with a view of the ocean.
Outside the gate were a pair of guards, wearing segmented armor reminiscent of the samurai. They stood to attention, holding their spears upright. Seeing them only made Lelouch wonder once again if it was an unbelievable coincidence or something else, the way Inazuma seemed to match Japanese history.
"Hold!" One of the guards said, stepping forward.
"I am Sir Dainsleif, and this is my party. The Yashiro Commissioner is expecting us," Dainsleif said, producing an envelope from the folds of his clothes, handing it to the guard, who opened it.
"This seems to be in order. You are expected, the commissioner is inside waiting for you. Please proceed," The guard replied as he and his comrade stepped aside.
"Thank you," Dainsleif said, leading Lelouch and the others inside the Kamisato Estate. As they entered, they saw a beautiful scene; a large, ornate pavilion that had looked like the main house from the outside, but the actual house was actually to the left. Between the buildings and the walls was a neatly made stone path that led to the pavilion and to a smaller area which Lelouch assumed was a place for outdoor meetings and handing out assignments. To the right Lelouch caught a glimpse of a zen rock garden, like the one he had seen at the Kuruguri estate once, and a breathtaking view of Inazuma City.
Heading up the steps into the pavilion, the group turned left, heading for the main house of the estate, where another pair of guards waited. This time they stepped aside to allow the group entry, but not without gesturing to leave any bags carrying the luggage belonging to Lelouch and Nunnally behind at the door.
"Don't worry, sir. Your things will be taken care of," the guard offered reassuringly.
Dainsleif nodded in understanding, and they left their belongings there.
It seemed almost excessive, how well guarded the place was. If not for him being head of his nation's intelligence agency this might've been a bit much for someone who oversees all cultural and ceremonial affairs, Lelouch mused.
Once inside, they reached a main hall that could house a large meeting of people. The interior matched what he had seen in Japan at the Kururugi Estate, except much of the walls were purple with the emblem of the clan prominent. There was a small table with a shogi board on top of it, and cushions on the floor. Behind the table, a young man of seventeen was seated, sipping tea. He wore a white suit that seemed to be a combination of Japanese ascetics and the western style, a golden sash around his waist and another hanging off his neck. He had pale skin, shoulder-length light blue hair, and light purple eyes.
"Ah so this is the young child you've told me about. I've looked forward to meeting you and his sister," the young man said, setting down his tea cup. "Greetings, travelers. I am Kamisato Ayato, head of the Kamisato Clan and the Yashiro Commissioner."
"Thank you for seeing us, clan head. Most importantly, thank you for your assistance in hiding them," Dainsleif, sitting down on the cushion opposite Ayato.
"Not at all. You have been a great help to our family's efforts against the Abyss Order and other dangerous groups. You have served our house and our nation well. It was the least I could do," Ayato replied.
"I offer my thanks regardless," Dainsleif replied.
"But perhaps the children would be better off settling in," Ayato replied before clapping his hands. "Thoma, would you mind helping Lelouch and his sister to their accommodations?"
"At once, my lord."
Lelouch looked over his shoulder, to see a young man with short blond hair and green eyes, wearing a red nagagi. He stood out from his appearance as much as the fact that he was about the same age as Lelouch.
"Come on, I can carry your sister to where she'll be staying. Your things should've been moved to your new rooms by now," Thoma offered with a cheerful smile.
"Very well," Lelouch said, as Siegfried helped Thoma carry the young girl with the former prince following.
"Very subtle way to have them leave while we can talk more freely," C.C. complemented.
"Considering what they've been through, I thought it best not to have them worry any further. I can tell they are adapting well to our world, but I am sure Lelouch must have some lingering concerns," Ayato commented.
"Indeed," Siegfried said in agreement.
"Now then, would you two like to tell me more about the Geass Order and Britannia, then we can go over what we've prepared so far and what needs to be done still?" Ayato said, beginning the meeting.
Meanwhile, Thoma led Lelouch to Nunnally's room, gently placing the young girl on the bed, allowing her a chance to relax. Together, he and Lelouch worked to unpack Nunnally's things.
"Is there anything we should know while we are staying here?" Lelouch asked.
Thoma shrugged. "You are a guest of our house. Just act accordingly- be polite, don't overstep, and let us take care of your needs. Don't worry too much about formalities. Since this is a private residence, Ayato doesn't care much for it unless he has official business to take care of," Thoma offered, hoping to put Lelouch at ease. "I know some people think he can be intimidating, but he is one of the nicest men I've known. His family took me in when I got shipwrecked coming to Inazuma to look for my father."
"You're not from Inazuma?" Nunnally asked curiously.
Thoma just laughed. "Well, blonde hair isn't something you'd normally see among the people here. I am actually from Mondstadt. My mother was from there, and that's where I grew up until I decided to look for my father in Inazuma, after he decided to return."
Lelouch listened, unsure of how to feel about the young man's openness.
"I never did find my father, despite trying my best. Ayato and his sister took me in when they found me on the beach below the estate, so I've stuck with them ever since."
Quite a story- and that was only the short version. Lelouch wondered how much he had been through.
"Ayato has a sister?" Nunnally asked.
"Yes, her name is Ayaka. She is about my age. She was busy with lessons in etiquette this morning, but you'll probably see her by this afternoon," Thoma answered.
"Or right now," a new voice chimed in, feminine and light. Standing at the doorway was a young girl. She had the same hair color as Ayato but longer, tied into a long top-knot ponytail tied with a pink ribbon. Her eyes were light blue-gray, and she had the same pale complexion as her older sibling, wearing a light blue furisode and a white yukata over it.
"Hello everyone, and welcome to our house. I am Kamisato Ayaka. It is a pleasure to make your acquaintance."
"Hello, I am Nunnally."
"Likewise. I am Lelouch, Lady Ayaka," Lelouch said, offering his hand to greet Ayaka.
"Please there is no need for formalities within this mansion," Ayaka said, shaking Lelouch's hand. "I just hope you'll be comfortable here."
"I am sure we will be, but thank you for your family's hospitality," Lelouch remarked.
"Not at all. As I am sure my brother mentioned, my family owes Mr. Dainsleif for his help," Ayaka replied. "I am free the rest of the day. Would you be interested in a game of Go?"
"Of course. I assume the game is the same as the one I am thinking of," Lelouch replied, intrigued.
He had played the game a few times with Suzaku, the game being a two-player abstract strategy board game. The objective is for players to control more territory on the board than their opponent, which they would accomplish by surrounding empty intersections or territory with the player's own stones, and to capture their opponent's stones by surrounding them. Suzaku had lost to him many times, such games not being his strong suit. If the game was the same then Lelouch would have no problem playing.
"So the Britannian Emperor commands a secret sect of operatives known as the Geass Order, also known as the Directorate," Ayato said, sipping from a tea cup.
"It's more of a cult. They have considerable resources and many members with different cells spread out, with the headquarters changing when the leadership changes," Siegfried explained
"What is constant is that the Order collects orphans from all corners of the empire, especially the ghettos of conquered Areas, to use as new recruits to be raised and indoctrinated as agents. Each one is granted a Geass, but its ability and effectiveness is dependent on the user, since there is no telling what it could be. Some are quite useful to the order, others not so much," C.C. added.
"I see," Ayato said, his eyes narrowing in disapproval. They didn't have to say it; he could well imagine what an organization like that might do to their failed experiments.
"Aside from pursuing their goal of completing the Ragnarok Connection, they also deal with anyone who poses an obstacle to their agenda, especially those who oppose the Emperor."
"Dispatching them to ensure the Emperor's hands remain clean, I am sure," Ayato said. C.C. nodded.
"Yes. They dealt with political problems that couldn't be silenced through other means, but V.V. no doubt crossed a line when he killed the only consort the Emperor favored," Siegfried mused, while Dainsleif remained quiet.
"Those poor children. It's a wonder Lelouch is as well adjusted as he is, and poor Nunnally, having to suffer for it… how could their father do this to them? Had he no love for his own children, to cast them away into a distant land which he would go on to invade anyway? I am glad to hear their time on Watatsumi Island was far better than their name in Japan. I am hopeful we can continue that trend here."
"That is my hope," Dainsleif nodded.
"Of course," Ayato smiled knowing before taking another sip from his tea, perhaps suspecting there was more to Dainsleif's decision to seek his help.
"Then it's agreed. C.C. and I will leave for Liyue, from where we'll conduct missions with the Adventures Guild to begin amassing Mora for our own living experiences, and to help set up everything needed for Fontaine," Siegfried said, going over a plan that had been in the works. "Dainsleif will stay in Inazuma to look after Lelouch and continue his training, including Nunnally's efforts to master her Vision."
"I could help when I am available, and Ayaka could use a good sparring partner for her own training in our family's style of swordplay," Ayato said, eager to help.
"Thank you. I just hope all of the information we provided on the Geass Order will be helpful," Siegfried said, with a hopeful smile.
"It is. We now know what to expect from Geass users, and can begin taking steps to identify them, should they appear in Inazuma," Ayato replied.
Meanwhile, Ayaka and Lelouch began their next game of Go. Ayaka had not only proven herself far better at the game than Suzaku, but a match for Lelouch himself. She held four wins against Lelouch's six, with Thoma explaining the progress of the game to Nunnally.
"Another close game," Thoma said. "They're neck and neck now. Could be Ayaka tying the score, could be Lelouch pulling ahead.
"You can do it brother. Try to get a winning streak!" Nunnally cheered.
"You are quite good at this game. You should consider challenging my brother when he isn't busy," Ayaka complimented, brows furrowed as she contemplated her next move..
"Thank you. You are pretty good yourself."
As much as Lelouch welcomed an intellectually stimulating challenge, his mind couldn't help but drift. Ayato was an interesting character; rather young to be an important government official. And with no parents in sight- what had happened there?
"Your move, Lelouch."
"Ah," Lelouch said, his thoughts returning to the moment. "Good move."
"So Ayaka, do you know if Lelouch will still be training here?" asked Nunnally.
"I don't think it's a question of whether I will or not, just what kind of training I should expect," Lelouch said with a feeling of dread, making his next move.
"I am not sure what Mr. Dainsleif has in mind, but I know you will become my sparring partner for my swordsmanship training," Ayaka remarked as she contemplated her next move.
"Sparring partner?" Nunnally remarked. "Will my brother be okay?"
Ayaka giggled, "Don't worry, I am still a beginner. From what I hear, your brother is around the same level."
"I'll go easy on you," Lelouch said sarcastically. If his past experiences had taught him anything, everyone and their grandmother could handle a sword better than him.
The following morning…
Damn it, Lelouch thought, as Ayaka knocked the training blade out of his hands, sending him to the ground. He grunted with pain where he lay, rubbing the back of his hand. Even wearing training garb, with protective equipment including a mask and helmet to protect him, that had still hurt.
"I am sorry, Lelouch. I guess I got carried away," Ayaka said, offering her hand to help Lelouch back onto his feet.
Carried away? Lelouch thought. I could barely see you!
Ayaka had claimed she was a beginner, but it seemed that term had been used in a very relative sense. She had launched herself at him lightning fast, the former prince having little time to defend. It had been over before it had even had time to begin. Every swing had been precise; any attempt to counterattack or escape had been shut down, her wooden sword already in striking distance, deflecting every attack and cutting off any escape.
She's either a natural at this, or she took her training very seriously, Lelouch thought, quietly impressed despite the embarrassment.
"It seems you have a long way to go, before you can spar with Ayaka, it seems," Dainsleif commented, watching from the sidelines. Lelouch looked at Dainsleif with a scowl on his face, but knew better than to talk back.
"Giving me that look won't change the fact that your combat skills need more work," the knight said mildly.
"It's not going to change overnight," Lelouch replied, nursing his wounded pride.
"True. Say, it can't all be swordplay, and you need a break. Why don't we take a visit to the shrine tomorrow?"
"The Grand Narukami Shrine?" Ayaka inquired.
"The one at the top of the mountain next to us?" Lelouch asked. Dainsleif nodded.
"Yes, the top of Mt. Yougou. Be ready at dawn," Dainsleif said, before walking away.
"I am sure my instructor will be willing to help you," Ayaka offered.
"I am not too worried about that, and I appreciate it, but.."
"But?"
"I am worried about what Dainsleif has planned. I get the feeling it will be anything but a simple hike," Lelouch said, eyeing Dainsleif suspiciously.
At least I won't be dealing with Siegfried for a while. That man makes too many questionable decisions for my liking, Lelouch thought.
Meanwhile, C.C. and Siegfried were crossing the wooden bridge leading into Liyue Harbor. One of the busiest ports in Teyvat and Liyue's economic and trading hub, the harbor held over a dozen ships. Some were small fishing and transport ships while others were larger, with different designs and styles signifying their foreign origin.
This place reminds me of the old towns and cities in the Chinese Federation. Much of the architecture seems similar, C.C. observed.
Liyue's buildings, especially the Fudian roofing style, were near identical, as were the paper lanterns, making C.C. feel as if she was walking back in time, similar to when she saw Inazuma City herself not too long ago. Even the clothing and style was similar. The green-haired immortal saw a man walking alongside his young daughter dressed in a light tan Tang suit.
She had seen Liyue Harbor once before, but only from a distance. This time she was walking among them as she and Siegfried passed through the busy marketplace near the harbor. There were many wooden stalls selling everything you would expect from food like fruits, vegetables and fish to stalls that sold seemingly everything else like clothing, tools, and jewelry.
After making their way through the crowded marketplace of the docks, they ascended a long flight of stone stairs, Feiyun Slope, the heart of Liyue Harbor and its merchant district with notable stores such as Mingxing Jewelry and Wanwen Bookhouse. The buildings loomed large around them with bridges connecting the floors above to other businesses situated above.
I'd rather we finish our business soon. Compared to Inazuma, Liyure Harbor is more densely packed with people, and much busier, C.C. thought.
Crossing another bridge, the pair headed southeast for Chihu Rock, the lower class district of the city. It had its own shops, restaurants, tea houses as well as markets. But their destination was near the edge of the city, elevated upon a small hill with bricks supporting the small building: the Adventurers' Guild. Ascended the wooden stairs, they approached the young woman staying behind the counter of the guild. She had short black hair, fair skin, gray-blue eyes dressed in a white dress with a black corset, green accents and sleeves, a red bow on the back and a bonnet on top of her head.
"Ad astra abyssosque! Welcome to the Adventurers' Guild," the girl greeted.
"It's a pleasure to meet you, Miss Katheryne," Siegfried began before handing the young woman a pair of handbooks. "We're looking for commissions, do you have any? Please have a look at our papers, proving we are both adventures of the guild and what we can do," he said, handing two small notebooks to the young woman.
Katheryne nodded, accepting the two handbooks. She opened one at a time, reading over the contents. Once she was finished she returned both Adventure Handbooks to Siegfried, who gave C.C. her handbook back.
"Seeing the commissions you have finished, we do have a job that might just be right for seasoned adventurers such as yourselves," Katheryne said, handing Siegflied an envelope. "You'll find the details inside. Once the commission is done, report back for your compensation."
"Thank you. We'll return as soon as the job is done."
Once they were finished, Siegfried and C.C. departed the city, taking the bridge out of town and heading west down a road that would take them past the mountains through a pass with Mt. Tianheng in the middle. After making sure no one was around, C.C. said,
"Seasoned adventurers? Isn't this our first time?"
"The friend I met with has connections with their main headquarters, and he was able to provide us with Adventure Handbooks from our country of origin to better fit the false backstories for both of us," Siegfried replied.
"Really now? In exchange for what?"
"Confidential. Part of our agreement, sorry," Siegfried replied dismissively. C.C. glared at him. Lelouch wasn't alone in being wary of Siegfried and his decision making skills.
The following morning Dainsleif took point, leading Lelouch and Ayaka as the group headed up the trail leading to the Grand Narukami Shrine. As Lelouch expected, this was no straightforward excursion. Their journey to the shrine itself began easily through, but as they ascended the dirt pathway, they noticed the path seemed to loop around the mountain itself. There the first sign of trouble lay ahead, the pathway giving way to a red wooden bridge that went under an outcropping of rocks that no doubt provided shelter from the rain, however parts of the path seemed to have broken apart.
The path as a whole seemed safe to cross, but a noise from below drew Lelouch's attention. He couldn't see what was below, but he remembered the sounds the monsters he encountered on Watatsumi Island made.
"Are those Hilichurls?"
"Yes, they usually hide under the bridge, waiting for someone to carelessly walk off the bridge," Ayaka answered, placing a reassuring hand on Lelouch's shoulder. "Just stay on the bridge and we'll be fine. I've never heard of them actually going up on it."
"Why are they left alone then? They're dangerous," Lelouch muttered uneasily.
"Hilichurls always come back, no matter how many times they are killed. It's not worth the effort," Dainsleif replied. "They know no one would drive them off as long as they make no effort to attack anyone on the bridge. They stay on their turf, we stay on ours."
"They just wait for someone to fall off?" Lelouch asked, to which Dainsleif nodded in reply.
"Let's keep moving," Ayaka said. Without another word, the group kept moving.
Once they cleared the bridge, they reached a pathway that led through the mountain where it began to split into two. At the center, in between the two mountains below was a lake surging with lightning. Lelouch's eyes went wide. The spectacle was out of this world; even though he could see it with his own eyes, he couldn't quite believe it. Even more shockingly, there were large pieces of the mountain hovering in the air, adrift above the lake, each large enough to be a small island.
"What is that?" He managed. "Some kind of electrified lake?"
"Yes. No one knows for sure why, but as far as we know, the lake has always been like that," Ayaka answered.
"Really? It was just there one day?" Lelouch asked, curious.
Ayaka shrugged. "I am sorry. I wish I knew more."
"It's- fine," Lelouch replied, staring at the unreal spectacle.
They followed another path that went around the mountain again, which became narrower as they climbed higher and higher; the hike to the top was going to take a while. Lelouch had lost track of time, but going by where the sun in the sky was, it was close to noon. It had taken them more than three hours to get where they were.
"If you were wondering if there was a faster way to get to the top," Dainsleif remarked, noticing Lelouch was using the position of the sun to figure out what time it was. "There is, but you lack the means to reach the floating islands."
Lelouch tried to imagine how one could scale the mountain using those islands, wondering if the right element might help, or perhaps being creative with it was the way to go. He didn't have much time to think about it, though, because ahead Lelouch noticed a young girl standing by some bushes ahead.
Her clothes look similar to the priestesses of the shrines of Japan and Watatsumi Island? Lelouch thought, assuming she was likely a priestess in training judging by her appearance and youth. She was dressed in the white robes befitting a Shinto priestess, and she had shoulder-length green hair and fair skin. She had her back turned to them, focused on the task of gathering herbs, with a basket hanging over her left arm. As they drew closer, the girl suddenly collapsed. Lelouch and Ayaka hurried over to the collapsed girl. Ayaka turned her over, while Dainsleif knelt down.
"She's still breathing, but she's running a fever," Dainsleif said, after using his hand on her forehead to check her temperature.
"She'll be fine if we can get her inside where she can rest," Ayaka added.
"Thankfully, the shrine is nearby. We don't have to go far," Dainsleif said, before glancing at Lelouch.
"What?!"
Lelouch paled, looking at the stairs that went around the final stretch to the top of the mountain. Knowing the former prince, he had a feeling Dainsleif was going to make him carry the girl.
Ten minutes later the group neared the shrine, climbing up the winding staircase leading to the very top of the mountain. Lelouch's legs trembled with every step; he grit his teeth as he strained under the weight of the priestess- of course Dainsleif had marched him for hours up the mountain, only to force him to carry some random woman right when his legs were about to become jelly.
"Why couldn't you carry her?" Ayaka said. Lelouch was struggling. His legs were quaking, and every step happened out of sheer determination, his muscles screaming in protest. "We could've been at the shrine by now," Ayaka said, but Dainsleif ignored her, to the girl's frustration. Lelouch just grit his teeth, taking deep breaths and putting one foot in front of the other. He was surprised when Dainsleif put a hand on his shoulder, stopping him.
Thankfully the group reached their destination, the Grand Narukami Shrine. While the "grand" part was debatable, it was impressive given the limited space they had to build on. The Shrine was a large red building, decorated with many paper lanterns, a pair of ponds opposite of one another along the main path leading to the shrine proper while passing a stand where, if they were similar to Japanese Shrines, where Lelouch assumed fortune slips were given. It was a single floor structure, built on an elevated platform with sakura trees surrounding it, and one very large Sakura tree behind the main building, two smaller buildings set to the side.
"We're there, kid," he said with a smile. A very familiar face was already at the entrance to greet them.
"Oh dear, I was wondering who was making that noise," Yae Miko said, with an amused expression. "Yet it seems you found my absent shrine maiden. You are working that poor boy to death, Dainsleif," she said with an amused chuckle.
"Shinobu!" an older girl in her late teens cried out. She wore the same attire as the girl on Lelouch's back, and had long brown hair. "Thank you for finding her, I got her."
"No…problem," Lelouch replied weakly. But as soon as Shinobu was off his back, Lelouch promptly collapsed onto his knees.
"Are you alright?" Ayaka said, worried as she knelt down next to Lelouch.
"He'll be fine. In fact, he'll be stronger for it," Dainsleif replied. Ayaka glared at him, while Lelouch tried to mutter something to the effect of 'screw you,' but his voice failed him.
"Why don't you stop torturing him, and let's talk, have tea and give the poor child some rest?" Yae Miko offered sweetly.
"No thank you, this was meant to be a training trip," Dainsleif replied.
"And put this boy through more where he can barely stand? No, I insist you stay, so we can talk," Miko said. There was a sharp edge under her polite tone, and Dainsleif sensed a threat.
"Very well. I trust there is someplace my ward can rest?"
"Of course. He'll be taken care of while we talk," Yae Miko replied with a smile.
A/N: And with that the last chapter of Lelouch as a child, enduring hell. Next chapter Lelouch debuts as Zero, that's right we are skipping six years to open on that.
What kind of conversation did Miko have with them? Well you'll have to wait a bit to find out.
But at least I've finished introducing those who will be long time friend of Lelouch and will have a role to play during events of Inazuma.
As for what events lead to Lelouch having what he got and etc will be elaborated upon in future chapters, sometimes when a character in the know inquires to him.
The new chapter will be posted as soon as my beta finishes with it, so in the meantime I'll be working on my other stories to try and get more out.
Until then have a good day or evening, and I hope you enjoyed this chapter.
At the suggestion of my beta, as fun as tormenting Lelouch with training can be, it's getting old so after this chapter we're skipping six years to something those I've spoken to on space battles and the fourm for this story I've been eager to do.
Anyway enjoy.
Chapter 5
Changing Scenery
Changing Scenery
