I don't know, I'm not a dev. Just saw the announcement in my Library screen, and figured people might want a free game.

I'm pretty sure Steam's done Free Weekends where people were actually allowed to keep the game after the free period ended before...

Yes, but that is through Steam's system and has a duration set before starting. Setting something 'officially' to free with a duration "until I decide it's not" and then setting it back could have consequences.

Like I said, I'd like to think there is a reason it's done this way and it makes sense so I'm theorizing along those lines, but really I have no clue and I'm just coming up with ideas that kinda make sense as to why.

Technically, if they're both free, is there any reason why you can't just grab both the Steam version of the demo in addition to the GoG version? Especially since going off the system requirements, the game only takes up 512 MB. The only issue might be transfering your save games over if one version becomes unusable for some reason.

This is a much better reason than what I came up with.

Control. By altering the demo only, the dev actually has control over the version he made free, but if he made the official entry free anyone who had the Steam license would continue to have the full game free forever.

Meh, whatever. Too much puzzling out motivations, nobody is here for that. We just want free stuff, if anyone wants to continue it should probably be taken to the general video games thread.
