General chat thread

I'm starting to really like The Boys. It's a pretty nearly written story and has some deft character drama in between all the gross sex jokes and cringeworthy modern references.

I'll start S3 in this evening itself. Or perhaps I should wait until the last episode comes out.

The Boys is a great show. Dirt nasty at the best of times, and cynical as all fuck, but it's some of the best shit I've seen in a while. The actors really bring their all, top tier performances all around.

Third season starts rough. Doesn't hold back at all. That first episode, and some of the scenes in later ones, are peak The Boys. Fuckin love it. Last episode comes out in a few days, too, so there's that.

Also on Amazon, The Terminal List came out. My brother reads all of those books and tells me about them, we've been looking forward to that. Watched the first bit of the first episode, looks good so far. Hope Chris Pratt can pull off James Reece.

Yeah.

The boys has all the subtlety of Kool Aid man busting through a wall. And I'm kinda down that at this point.

Herogasm itself, the event not the episode, was kinda boring compared to all the hype. Like there was so much hype and talk and a disclaimer, and then nothing that graphic or crazy happened. Like I think the scene in episode 1 beats out anything that happened during it.

Guess it was sort of a bait and switch for the stuff at the end though.

So is it just me or has there been a ton of new accounts lately? Did another site shut down or something?

We need a name for the group of SB and its many offshoots.

Archive of our own has one of the best filter mechanics of all of the sites I read my shitty low quality fiction on.

It's a real shame I hate 70% of everything there, because half of it is gay woobies and the other half is either barely legible or the most heinous shit you've ever read. It's actually a little impressive how fucked some of those stories can get.

Lol, that's precisely why I liked it. It's unfiltered, and yet so neatly sorted. Order and chaos coming together.

For someone who felt frustrated with how impossible it was to find good fics on fanfiction.net, it's a relief.....though mind you, I still have no bloody idea what Kudos means.

Makes sense. Why couldn't they just have labelled them that?

Any car experts online today? I've got concerns about rust and I'm trying to figure out what, if anything, I should do about it, but all the websites I can find for car owner advice are trying to sell me something or get me to use their "free" apps and I don't trust what they're selling me.

I wouldn't call myself an expert, but I've kept more than one old clunker running years past its expiration date. First question: where's the rust? Because there's a pretty big difference between rust on the body, and rust on the frame.

Though, if you've got rust on the frame, it's about guaranteed it's also on the body.

It's on the front... fender? I think is the term? That little spot right between the driver-side door and the front left wheel. There's been surface rust there for a few years but it seemed strictly cosmetic so I left it alone. Then a couple months ago I noticed a small hole in the exterior that'd been stuffed with leaves like something was trying to build a nest in there. Not sure how to proceed, but I'm sure my local Firestone is going to charge me an arm and a leg if I get the whole fender replaced and I can't really afford that right now. Of course I also can't afford to have my car break down because some chipmunk was chewing on my wires, so...

I... don't think there are any vulnerable critical wires that such a hole would expose which said chipmunk couldn't reach just by going under the vehicle and then up. But given how vague everything you've told me is...

You know what might help?

Take a picture of the rust spot so I can actually see exactly what you're talking about. Because if you're not even sure what a fender is, there's very little I can tell you that's helpful.

First thing I'd do is a check of the entire wheel well area... if it's rusted through on any nearby panel, I'm almost certain there's going to be worse damage within there. The frame, too... that's the important part. Rusted panels aren't good- they're what protect the frame (also rust holes increase wind drag and thus are murder on fuel efficiency).

Meanwhile, a rusty frame is a life-threatening accident just waiting to happen.

On the plus side- if care so little about rust that a panel rusted through, the fenders and well wheel guards are usually cheap and pretty easy to replace even for an amateur... long as you don't care if it exactly matches the color of the rest of your vehicle. Which, if you did, I doubt you'd have let the rust get that bad.

I know exactly jack all about cars beyond how to drive them, so I've always left maintenance to the experts. I take my car in for a tune-up whenever I get an oil change about 3-4 times a year, and I figure the guys at the shop will let me know if there's anything of concern that I should know about (if nothing else so they can charge me for it). But none of them have ever brought this up as a point of concern.

Heh. Don't. Some will, others won't, really depends on how well you know the mechanics.

An independent mechanic that you're friends with will let you know.

The guys at the Jiffy Lube almost certainly will not. They don't get paid enough to give a fuck.

That said... on those pictures, how long do you want that vehicle to last? If you're planning to scrap it in the next five years, the frame isn't going to be a problem (though you really should replace that panel- your gas mileage will thank you... right now, probably pay for itself in a single tank...).

I'd say 50/50 it lasts another 10, really depends on where you live. Rust spreads faster in wet regions than dry, and a lot faster in salty environments... be that near the ocean, or in places that use salt to keep roads clear of ice and snow...

Especially the road salting. Here in Illinois, a single bad winter can age the underside of a car by a decade or more.

As opposed to, say, Arizona... where you can find husks on the side of the road where every scrap of rubber has rotted off and there might be a mummy in the trunk, yet the frame could probably still be used.

I'm in the Chicago area, so that's probably road salt rust on the undercarriage. I'll have to keep that in mind for my next vehicle, this one I'm hoping to get another 5-ish years out of it before I replace it.

Is Chicago nice? I only know if it from gangster films.

Honestly, the gangster films aren't that far off... let's see.

During the summer it's a sweltering hellscape.

During the winter it's a frozen hellscape.

I guess it's pretty comfortable during the spring and fall months.

Got this great big lake with vast expanses of beautiful beaches... but don't expect to go into the water, there's a solid 50% chance it'll be declared unsafe due to some form of feces-transmitted infectious disease. Also a pretty good chance of stepping on someone's used drug needle.

The taxes are obscene.

The only way to make a living wage is to work for either the government or the mafia.

The government is the mafia. Seriously, if there is a single Chicago politician that isn't directly in the pocket (or a member) of the mafia, I haven't heard about it.

The political elites can literally beat you to death in public and get away with it.

There is a very real chance some asshole will break into your house to shoot you, rape your daughter, and take your TV to sell for drug money.

If you shoot him, you'll be arrested.

And the only reason the city hasn't burned to the ground is because it can leach off the rest of the state like a cancerous tumor.

There is a reason its unofficial (for now- give 'em another decade) nickname is 'Chiraq'.

....I hope you are exaggerating for comedy's sake.

At any rate, I suppose I'll be better of fantasizing about NYC or San Francisco rather than Chicago.
